Classic Blades - What is your must have?

I was in the process of sorting through all the suggestions & doing a little research on which sets to add to my wish list when I ran across this site:

http://lowscore.de/ - "BLADES" a private collection.

After wiping the drool from my mouth I came to the conclusion that I would take this collection and call it day!

The ferrules alone are dreamy. How has club aesthetics has gone from these beauties to stickers?

Current designers need to be strapped to the hood of the ball retriever at a busy driving range.

Yes, awesome collection and excellent photos. The owner of that collection sometimes posts on persimmon golf today. Might be keeping an eye out on this forum too, who knows. Great eye candy every time I come across his site.

Guys, I will hopefully soon be the owner of a set of 1972 Wilson Staff Button Backs and am looking for advise on who to use to put these back to mint condition.
Complete restoration is what I am looking for, any suggestions other than the iron factory or Quality Golf

The Iron Factory or GolfWorks can fix you up. Great set irons, probably the best looking iron Wilson made!

Thanks guys I got both the 1972 Button Backs 3-PW and 1984 Fluid Feel Tour Blades 2-PW so I will play one set while the other is getting refinished then send in the others. Also picked up a Original Sandy Andy to go with them. Cant wait to have all redone and build my retro Wilson Staff bag setup. This is the stuff I grew up playing. Will add one of my 8813's for the putter and am trying to find some Staff Tour Blocks to finish it off.

New guy here...

I'm in the process of restoring a set of 1960 Wilson Staff Dynapower Fluids. Beautiful clubs.

Also, how come no one has mentioned the Arnold Palmer Tru-Matic blades? I don't know if they were low end back in the day...

My buddy gave me a 2-9 set in good shape, and I think they're gorgeous. But I've not seen mention of them in my lurking here.

Well after purchasing a set of Macgregor Muirfields and having one of the best golfing weeks ever, I would have to say them..

Im of the age where GI clubs where pushed into your hands at most pro shops and never really thought that Blades would be a option untill I was low single digit, how wrong I was!!!!

I wanted a small compact head and a club that would tell me what I was doing wrong and I can not be happier with the Muirfield's.. I would like to try a set of VIP's but the only ones currently forsale near me have the Step Sole and I have no idea if these are worth the effort of a reshaft and regrip all for curiosity even if the purchase price for the clubs is small...

My other issue when trying clubs is that I need a really flat lie angle so its a waste of time going to a pro shop to hit anything off the rack to get a idea of what they are like. In saying that all the stores near me dont even have a loft or lie machine :WTF:

So after some research it looks like the Dunlop Maxfli Australian Blades I have purchased are from the late 70's to early 80's and they showed up today.

I am pleasantly surprised with the condition as they look even better in person than in the pictures.

No chrome or groove issues at all and almost no bag chatter, just need new grips and a little cleaning up.
I will probably redo the paint fill on them as well.
They say Dunlop on the sole and are numbered 2-9 and the words Pitching Wedge are spelled out on the soles, they say Maxfli in Block Type Script in the middle of the blades back and have a Black Dot inside of a Black Circle with the words Australian Blade and in all CAPS under the top lip of the blade.
The shafts are pinned from the rear of the hosel only (the pins dont go all the way through to the other side).
The ferrules are black with 2 gold rings and are all intact and in great shape.
The shafts all have the shaft bands intact and are gold with black lettering, thay say Dunlop Dynamic with a large S on them and are numbered on the back side as well with what appear to be some sort of ID number and are all the same.

As you can tell I am extremely pleased with these and really look forward to getting them out on the course.
Feeling some Deja-Vu and might have to listen to some Classic Rock on Monday while I prep them for play!

Well I just regripped the Aussie Blades and when cutting off the grips that were on them I was pleasantly suprised to see that after I removed the grips, that wrapped in/under the tape there was twisted twine on the back side of the shaft. This is how they made "Reminder Grips" back in the day. The job of installing these reminder was outstanding and probably done by either a club pro or old school repair shop as I dont remember even the older "Box Stores" ever doing this type of installation. Just further showed me that who ever owned these took care and pride in their ownership and thus probably another reason they are in such great shape.

Proving once again that I am a Classic Club Ho I couldn't help myself when I found a set of Jack Nicklaus MacGregor Muirfield 20th Anniversary iron set in almost new condition on the bay yesterday .
2-SW for $260 and pulled the trigger on them.

Just waiting for word on a set of T85 Eye-O-Matics I am looking at to go with them.

You my man, have bought one of the ultimate Blades ... albeit, a couple of years newer than the most classic Australian Blades. I used to play a set of Australian Blades back in the day & I remember like yesterday, when Mel Cowle the Dunlop Rep for New England, brought me my matching 1 Iron. Damn thing was skinnier than the knife I used to butter my toast & shinier, too!

Arnold Palmer Tru-Matics Double V-Cut 1968-1969?

So my buddy gave me a 2-9 set, and I love the way they look... I think they're sexy--the beginnings of the Bridgestone J40 (or the tourstage before it).

How come I can't find anything on this forum about them? Was this a cheap set back in the day?

They feel great when I hit them on the range and pure them. But I won't take them to a course because I'm a 20+ capper.

Don't let the 20+ capper thing stop you. I first demoed blades as a 20 hdcp, in 2000. MP14s. Hit them absurdly better and more accurately than my own GI irons; spent the better part of a bucket dropping 5 irons on a target green. You know, the sort of thing a 20 capper isn't supposed to be able to do. LOL

I switched to blades and my hdcp dropped to 13 that year. :)

Not saying it will happen to you, just don't listen to all the truisms about who can and can't play what clubs. They may work for you. They may not. You won't know until you try...

Right there with you, son_of_sahm. I'm an 18 in the middle of a swing change thus practicing (often with blades) more than playing this season. Trying to get up the courage to take them out on the course; so far, the Mizuno MX25s are still in the bag. A starting point for us both might be to take them out for an executive course 9 & see what happens. . . Another thing to consider is if you've got a traditional-style wedge or 3 in the bag, you're already playing blades.

Yep.

Usually when I mishit, it's because I hit 2 inches behind the ball. So I'm screwed whether it's a blade or shovel.

Back to the thread, does anyone know about the APs I'm referring to?

If I could find a cherry set of either FG-17s (all I see are beaters on the Bay) or Austrailian blades I would play 'em until the chrome wore off, then have 'em refinished.

Rinse, repeat. :)

Do you have pictures of the Palmers? I have had several sets Of Tru-matics, not sure about the V-cut?
