Pretty snotty opinion IMO. I hope your whole club isn't like this.

Some get it, some don't. I know your are a GOLFER, not someone who plays golf with no clue what it's all about.

CPSOX, is a gentleman who understands golf and the golf business. Insinuating otherwise on this forum is nothing but laughable.

I am not sure what to make of this thread either. First, let me say that the club was gracious enough to let my highschool team (yes highschool) play there a few times - I actually went to school across the street. We were comped or a member handled it for us, that is not snobby. Also, the members I encountered and once knew were not snobby at all.

The OP is trying to embarrass a prestigous course, b/c he was too lazy bring his clubs on a plane, I think the member has every right to defend himself. Sounds to me like guest is more 'entitled' than the member. Anyways, I hope the OP enjoyed himself, b/c it a beautiful layout and he probably wont be asked to come back.

And why didnt you just use your playing partner's clubs? You could have probably tipped a cart boy or caddie an extra 50 or 100 to get a nice set... geez.

Yeah, I would never trash a nice private club on here for the simple reason that I'd like to be invited back.

They didn't have demo clubs in the pro shop? They couldn't tape up some woods for you? No used irons or wedges you could have loaned? From such a prestigious club you might expect more.
[/quote]

I'm a member....why should our club inventory be available to demo to outside guests? No, we don't have a rack of used clubs like Golf Galaxy. We have brand new clubs so that people can buy......brand new clubs.

Fact of the matter is, with the Ryder Cup in town this is our busiest week. We have at least a few bags of very, very nice TM clubs that were likely spoken for before the op got there. If the op couldn't be bothered to bring his own clubs to play a top 50 course, that's the chance he took.

You're kidding right? What-they should have a dozen high quality sets available on the off chance someone actually shows up at a private club WITHOUT their own?

Like he said- they were packed during what was absolute perfect golf weather. At a former US open site. During Ryder Cup week. A number of clubs in the area were probably experiencing the same type of activity. I personally know of two, west of the city who had a number of high profile guests and again, this is absolutely the best time to play golf here in Chicago.

SandyEggoSam, let's hope the member who graciously sponsored your visit doesn't read this thread. It may be the last top 100 club you are invited to play.

Trust me even the member was a little embarrassed. Honestly my priority was The Ryder Cup this week and did not want the hassle of bringing my clubs and assumed like most that a "playable" set would be available for rental. I did not even mind if they were an older set but the fact they were incomplete and unmaintained was intolerable. It only cost a few $ to replace some grips and 5 minutes to clean them up. I appreciated the opportunity to play Olympia but this was unexpected for a caliber championship course.

This may be a bit out of 'left field' but could the OP have not called the course before he visited and asked as to the availability and quality of rental clubs?

Or asked the inviting member if he knew anyone who had a spare set of clubs he could borrow?

I know that this is a bit out there, but just a thought...

I don't think it's left field at all. I entertain friends and visitors often enough at my home course and sometimes need to look for golf clubs for those who do not have their own. It's really very normal to prepare in advance for whatever activity one plans upon during a trip, and Golf is just another of those things that require preparation.

I'm sure that pales to the embarrassment of having his guest portray his club in such a negative manner on a public forum that is read by thousands of golfers worldwide.

I did not "out" the member and never would take it to that level.

Perhaps this info will prepare others in the future regarding renting clubs or it may have some influence on the club itself receiving criticism.

I am sharing my experience, good, bad or neutral, and this is what Golfwrx is about.

This is why I have a spare bag at my place for anyone that visits.

That said, when I get invited to play on a nice, private course, I am grateful. The last thing I would do is b!tch about the course online.

Just got off the phone....OFCC has SEVEN sets of GOOD rental clubs. So again, I'll reiterate that on the busiest week of the year, the OP made the decision to come completely unprepared. I'll even go so far to say he was lucky to get any clubs, as I would imagine very few private clubs have that many sets of rentals. I'm also guessing he didn't tell his member friend he wasn't bringing clubs, as our entire membership has been reminded MANY times how busy our place would be this week.

So Sam, no our club won't have an indefinite number of rental sets for guest play. Nor will we take a brand new set of clubs off the shelf for one to use. I trust our Director of Golf runs the shop well, as a recent PGA Merchandiser of the Year.

To answer a few of your complaints from your now deleted post:

Bad caddies: our caddies are all young. The Chicagoland area is a huge supporter of the Evans Scholarship, most every caddy is high school aged and likely from a low income family. We'd rather support these kids and give up whatever experience may be provided by a 30 yr caddy. You probably missed a putt or two from not having a more experienced caddy, but since you didn't bring your own clubs, guessing your score wasn't a priority anyway.

Not a Top 100 course: Up for debate I guess....Golfweek, Golf Digest and Golf Magazine all disagree with you. You've seen 25 of the top 100? That's cool. I've seen ~80, I disagree as well.

Poor conditions: Our super won super of the year a few years ago. Now I think you're just making things up. In any case, I disagree again.

Any member would be disappointed to hear a guest wouldn't like to return again, but in this case, it may be an exception.

Maybe not directly, but you did out the member. I would imagine there weren't many members with a guest that played that particular week and took out those specific rentals. I'm sure there is enough info here to put it all together.
