His PW is 49 degrees. I cannot imagine they're tipping taper tip shafts much more than 1/4" either. I've heard many times he plays X1 straight in and same for the wedges. Every time I go to a Vokey clinic he tells the story when Tiger switched from X100 to S400 in his wedges.
1/4" tipping on the irons sounds right from what I've read as well. Not surprising with the 1.5" tipping on the driver either, makes me feel slightly better ;).

I'm interested in the story about him switching from X100 in the irons to S400, care to share a bit?
He played X100 in irons and wedges since he was 14 years old. Vokey saw him at a PGA Tour stop when he was obviously still playing Vokey wedges and asked Tiger why he played such stiff shafts in his wedges when he doesn't take many full swings with them. Had a set built with S400 and Tiger messed around with them and liked them. Next time Vokey saw him was at the 2000 Open Championship and he asked Tiger how he liked them to which he replied "you saw how they worked at Pebble" and smirked. He obviously tells the story much better but its cool every time I hear it.

Notice how the tour is a huge copycat league... S400 is now very popular. Look at all the lightweight sets going into play after early success... Steelfiber, PXi, DI, Tour Spec... etc, etc, etc.

Yeah, that thing looks like it's been to hell and back. Awesome.

I actually saw it in person, actually had his bag standing next to me in a VIP area at Firestone last year and wow, I was thinking why doesnt Nike get him a new head cover, but after thinking about it, it kinda of is cool.

Good deal, thanks for sharing. I'm sure the Tour is a big testing ground for everyone when it comes to manufacturers. They can whip up whatever they want, let some players test it out and see if they like it or not. One win (or even some press here) and everyone goes berzerk. I just got the PXis in my irons but I'm not 100% sold on them yet, I need to get a few more rounds under my belt first.

Isn't this a misunderstanding?
A mix of two different methods that are popular on tour?

A lot of players use X1 8-iron shafts i their wedges,
and Tiger tips his taper iron shafts - somewhere along the way
these two have mixed up, and mistakingly been called Tiger-stepping...?

I thought he was using the new ball? He tried it in that duel in china thing, and picked up some yards, also saying he liked the spin?

I've always heard of Tiger stepping as 8i S400 in the wedges. Howard Jones in the club building area describes it as something different. The alleged screenshots fail to show what he has going on with the wedge shafts or if his irons are even tipped.

The way he's driving the ball why not try out a new driver? Couldn't be any worse.

From what I have read/heard, it is a misunderstanding.

Using an 8-iron shaft (x-100) is often called Tiger-stepping, but it's actually not what he does.

Tiger reportedly uses S400 shafts that have been tip-trimmed.
