St Andrews.

I thought I would share this picture for no other reason than it looked so awesome today in the sunshine. Unfortunately I was working so I didn't have my clubs with me.

 

I saw some American guys finishing up on 18 and they were so happy to have got such great weather for the time of year.

Played October 2010...I close my eyes and still see the course clear as your picture. The only thing more lovelier than the course was the town it is in.

Played the Old Course first time in 2008 and will be back there to play again in April, 29th. Can't wait either! Have you guys played another Links Trust's courses like New, Jubilee, Eden? I'm planning to play maybe one or two rounds more there after the Old Course. Any suggestions, are those other courses worth it or should I rent a car and maybe find another great courses from nearby?

Quite simple no better place to play, the chills you get standing on the 1st tee!

The New and the Jube are very good courses, both worth playing, I prefer the New, I think it is more enjoyable, a little easier and more interesting. There are plenty of other courses near St. Andrews, just depends what you are looking for and what your budget is.

I won a trip to St Andrews and will be heading over the first week of September. Playing the Jubille, Old Course, and Kingsbarns. Sooooo excited!!!!!

Update!!!!!!

Managed to get half a day off from work, borrowed some clubs and waited at the starters hut at 6.30am. It was cold and still dark as the starters arrived, they said they could get me a game. I teed off at 7.40 first group out.

This place is pure magic, I honestly cannot express how much I enjoyed my round, the last two holes are so famous you can almost hear the echoes of the great players who have trodden those links before you.

Thank you so much St Andrews. I will return.........

How ironic, I will be playing the New and Old the very next day, Tuesday the 30th, part of an 8 day trip 3 buddies and I are making to Scotland. We're playing Carnoustie the day before, and as of now have left Wednesday open on our schedule. We are tentatively thinking either Kingsbarns or try the Old again through the ballot.

I have about $2500 to budget for trip to St. Andrews from Boston. The two musts for me are Old and Kingsbarns. What other courses could I afford to pay with that budget assuming I can find place to stay for around £50 a night and round trip airfare I've priced to be at around $1000.
I'm staying for a week.

If you are going for a week buy the three day pass. All you can play! Jubilee and Castle are solid from what I hear from my friends that go yearly.

Carnoustie is too close to ignore.

Kingsbarns is good, not great, and way overpriced. The New Course is as good as the Old minus the iconic first tee and finish in the town. Scotscraig is a belter, as is Monifieth. Montrose is also well worth a visit. Avoid The Castle Course, not mature enough yet.

For lodging check out Seaholm B&B in Anstruther. You can probably play all these great courses and stay at Seaholm within your budget depending on airfare

I disagree with the quality of Kingsbarns, but it is pricey.

First Post! Been a lurker for a while! I am so excited I will be in St. Andrews for 9 days the last 2 weeks of October 2013. Lots of planning ahead! so excited!

To say this photo is awesome would be an understatement. Yesterday, I read an article which featured a tour of some of the [url="http://www.haversham.com/st-andrews/inside-the-royal-and-ancient-clubhouse/"]rarely seen areas of the R&A clubhouse[/url]. What I wouldn't give to step out on that upper floor balcony. Or just to play the Old Course in general...

Just got back from 10 days in Scotland. Played Royal Aberdeen, Cruden Bay, Lundin Links, Kingsbarn, Old Course, Panmure (a very nice track in Carnoustie), Carnoustie Championship, Jubilee, Gleneagles Centenary(take a cart, don't walk it). Got a tour of the Royal & Ancient as a guest of a member. Pretty memorable & thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Was there a year ago during the Ryder Cup

Loved the Old (played it twice off of ballot... once in 60mph gusts). My favorite story is the 18th. Day 1 I kill a drive into a GALE and am still 150 out. A 190 yard drive !!

Can't get a 4 iron home that I hit 10 feet off the ground. One of my buds doesn't get home hitting driver and then driver off the deck

Two days later we play it in the normal wind and my drive is 8 steps off the front of the green. I hit a bump and run thru the valley of sin with a 9 iron and got applause from the gallery behind the green .. sweet memory

Loved Kingsbarns. Loved Carnoustie. New and Jubilee also good (epic par 3's at the turns at both)

Sadly, winded out at Muirfield due to 80-100mph gusts

I actually really enjoyed the Castle course. The greens are super hard. I shot and 81 with 41 putts playing off a 4 cap. My buddy as a 6 had 47 putts !!! Greens are wild and the pins were tucked for visiting pro's that were in town before the Dunhill. I recall one par 5 being 20 yards short in two to a front pin tucked hard against a knob. I hit a perfect flop that ran 75 feet by the hole and I barely made a 6 !!!

We also played the Sam Torrance course and it was OK as well

All you have to give to play the course is the money it costs to fly there and fee to play the course...stepping on the balcony is another story.

If your coming all the way to Scotland must play courses are St,andrews old,Gleneagles pga which will be host to the 2014 Ryder cup ,the Kings and Queens at Gleneagles are still hard to beat only an hours drive from St.andrews and Carnoustie.
Kingbarns and St Andrews bay are nice but don't have the history of the others .
If you can travel up to Aberdeen which is 3 hours drive from St.andrews Royal Aberdeen is an old links course and a real test which will host the 2014 Scottish open .
