Ping matte Black Redwood with Black Graphite shaft - One BAD Putter!

Hey Fellas -

 

As seen (possibly) from some previous posts, I've been playing around by installing black Ping / UST Mamiya hybrid shafts on a few putters.

 

It's a lot of extra work, but definitely worth it...

 

I even grayed the Ping WRX cover to match the Blackout Pingman grip.... Fun Stuff!

Ready for a long answer?

This is the 3rd time I've done this, first with a BeCu Pal4, next a BeCu B61 and now this one - the Redwood Anser... I also have these same putters with their original steel shafts to compare side by side.

Both the BeCu Pal4 and the BeCu B61 in graphite were 1" shorter than the ones from my collection and had different grips.

The Redwood Anser was also 1" shorter, but has the same Blackout Pingman grip as the one in the comparison.

I used the same balls to test with - 3 new Noodles and then 3 new Prov1's and was putting between 8 - +20' on my basement carpet - several times over...

Each graphite shaft, I added 10g of weight within the tip to help bridge to weight gap, as they are lighter than steel.

With each of the 3 putters I really think the graphite feels better... I know feel is subjective, but it's just my opinion...


I know this is not the same type of graphite shaft that is typically used in a putter, like a Matrix, but I don't want to shell out $150 for a putter shaft.


One this is for sure - the putters with these graphite shafts look Awesome! IMO...

The look was my no. 1 goal here... After trying it out on the Pal4 and all was good in terms of feel and looks - I figured this would be one to do that would look pretty cool.

I have another one coming up in a week or so - a bit different, but very cool!

What did you trim the tip too then? I had a steel shaft powder coated black. That looks like a good way to kill a few hours too

Good question...

First - Tipping a shaft will stiffen the flex a bit...

Secondly - Look at the 3rd pic. I wanted to have the finished product (with the grip installed) to show the larger "PING" and have about 1/4" of spacing between it and the grip. If I would not have tipped the shaft, the larger PING would have been overlapped and possibly the TFC...

Powder Coating is another option, or some have used KBS Black Nickel Wedge Shafts for a black putter shaft. I cannot find a black .355 steel putter shaft.

Two of the main reasons I used this particular shaft is the flat finish and the PING lettering in place of a shaftband.

IMO - It looks really cool with the lettering.....

As noted in this very post - I gave it, and others that I made similar to this a lot of practice putts. Even against the same putters with their original steel shafts, and I would say that the flex was the same after tipping 3" and the feel was great....

If this little experiment, albeit non-scientific would have been a flop - I never would have posted it here and opened myself up for "hahahaha" 's..... But, it worked and made this and the others look a lot cooler than before... Oh yeah - they work too.
