Coming over here in August eh !

You know that in August it can be warm here , even the rain can be warm sometimes !

I would go for a sailing jacket & oil skin trousers a good pair of welly boots & a sou' wester to keep the rain off yer heid ! ;)

Seriously it really is not that bad here in August .

May to end of Aug tends to be reasonable ,just the rest of the year that we go around with webbed feet.

I on a personal note I am looking @ a Sun Mountain Rain flex suit for the coming season (will need to ship it in from your side of the pond though !)

Or............... If that is not viable ----------------Galvin Green !

My tuppece worth !!

Have a good visit to this wonderful country. :partytime2:

Regards Steven

It's good to be prepared, and any excuse to buy new golf equipment.......but i've been sun burned in Scotland at this time of year.

Back on topic, I got my Proquip waterproof top at the 2002 Ryder Cup and that is still going strong, solid waterproofs and not too flashy.

I've had them all. No one touches Sunderland of Scotland.

Can you tell us about your experience with the SM Rainflex?

It just made its debut this winter -- you must buy outerwear often..

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Mizuno 5-year waterproof gear. I used to wear exclusively FTJ, but the Mizuno blows it away. Adjustable pant lengths (buttons not zippers so no chance of snags or tears) removable sleeves, etc. Not cheap but not crazy expensive either. Can get the full suit for around $250.

 I couldn't agree more. Mizuno is better priced and has a higher waterproof rating. Golf World UK rated the Mizuno suit #1 and they should know which is the best rain wear over there.

Post-trip analysis:

I took a set of Rainflex and a mixed set of Footjoy pants and Sunice jacket. Long story short - I never once wore the Sunice Jacket nor the Rainflex pants.

The rainflex material is more like fabric, rather than a smooth, waterproof-feeling material that is slick. I noticed that if you were walking through brush, the rainflex would get hung up and i was worried about it tearing, so i never donned the pants. They're probably fine, but they can be very warm if you're walking. The jacket was noticably warm for its relatively thin layers and I wore it when i felt a little chilly. It beads up water perfectly, but creates some odd little "dents" in the fabric where the rain drops hit. The "dents" flatten out once you stretch the area (in a swing, etc) but they're odd to look at; it created a few funny conversations about car hoods in Texas hailstorms. That's what you end up looking like. All in all, I give it a 9.0 out of 10. A 9 only becuase I thought it could vent sweat a little better, but i'm probably splitting hairs here. These are definitely not warm-climate rain gear as they do retain quite a bit of body heat.

The jacket moves well, didn't seem to "poof out" in bad spots (like around the midsection to interfere with putting/chipping) and when it's tight, it allows a bit of stretching. My only complaint is the cut of the sleeves which are a bit long. I have a big chest/shoulders/midsection so i have to buy the large sizes of stuff. I'm not that tall, so the arms most always tend to be too long on any garment I buy. I dont know if a medium would fit better, but the sizing chart online indicated not. If I was King, I would have one made with a large chest and medium arms. Cest La Vie.

Overall, I was very pleased with the purchase and would recommend anyone headed to Scotland pick up at least the Jacket. Because you'll be walking through gorse and other *****ly stuff, get some more heavy duty pants that wont catch and/or rip.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad your trip was warm with the Rainflex.

It finally dipped into the 40's in Dallas (at least for one day) and I donned the Rainflex Long Sleeve over a T Shirt. It still allows a little wind through but I can see a Mizuno sweater and the Rainflex being all the cover needed for the upper body for winter golf (along with a hat).

As to size, I have broad shoulders (not bulky) and usually take a Large -- in the Rainflex, I took a X-Large for more room in the shoulders so that a sweater would fit easily and not interfere with the swing. It feels fine without the sweater, too.

As to warmth, I tend to agree. I also have a short sleeve Rainflex and used it this spring/summer with our rains and did not become uncomfortably warm -- I did have the front zipper pulled down for venting.

I haven't purchased the pants yet -- they were out of stock last winter. I am looking at them now -- I think they have 2 sytles of pants -- I'll have to look on the website to see if they have any updates.

this thread is great, just what im looking for now that its rainy season. Has anyone tried the ZR Tour-lite jacket? All the responses here are regarding the Travellers Tour-lite.

I dont need the adjustment on the sleeves etc., so I'm wondering if its basically the same jacket without all the fancy bells and whistles?

Thanx in advance!

Yes, Dan, you are correct. I have been researching this same question myself. The main differences between the two jackets are the sleeve adjustments, and the Traveler's has a couple of extra pockets.

ZR is absolutely your best bet. Sizing runs to the large-end of the spectrum, because they design their outerwear to go over your normal attire. They recognize the intended use of their products and shape/fit it accordingly. Their website provides a very accurate measurement/fitting chart, as do most retailers who seller ZR products, ie: TGW.com, etc...

Good luck.

I just had a buddy over in the UK send me a FootJoy red label rain top, and as far as looks & fit & feel, it is the nuts!! This is a pic' of the white top that I have, I know, I know, it will not stay white long, lol. But it looks great right now.

By the way, these are not available in the US, so you will have to order through the UK.

I just ordered a ZR jacket (featherweight with zip off sleeves) and the thing that really sold me was the look and feel of the gore tex fabric. Raiin performance aside, to me this is a jacket that can be worn on any damp, cool, or windy day and it DOESN'T have that nylon rain suit "look" to it that most of the other rainwear has, even the better suits. I wanted something move versatile in terms of function and appearance.

TTT because this is a great thread with lots of opinions and info for those looking to buy some rain gear. After reading through all of it, I've come to a conclusion and please tell me if I'm wrong, THERE ARE LOTS OF GOOD BRANDS OF RAIN GEAR. Sun Mountain, FootJoy, ZR, Galvin Green, Sunderland, etc., etc., etc.

I am looking to buy a rain jacket for the upcoming golf season. I've got a pair of sun mountain pants that have not let me down. So basically I am going to go with a good deal on any of the aforementioned brands, or go with sun mountain. Sound like a good plan?

I bought a pair of Goretex rainpants at Cabelas for $89. In the past, I have found their quality to be outstanding and they have a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

Best of all, it matches my ZR Jacket.

To put yourself in the best position for good weather, always bring 2 sets of rain gear. Buy both.
