Rainsuit Poll: FootJoy v. Zero Restriction

Recommended Posts

Just for future reference ... i'm European, it rains a lot over here ... we do swear by our Galvin Greens :D

It's sometimes twice as expensive, but it's just such an incredibly good product.

Their Paclite stuff is lightweight, silent, non restrictive, breathes and is 100% waterproof.

Ever since i've bought a full suit, i haven't often used an umbrella during wet rounds.

And we do get a lot of rounds where it will rain through the full 18 holes.

ProQuip http://www.proquipgolf.com/

Seriously good stuff, and you can order the trousers in any waist size / leg length combo, plus they have a zipper fly and belt loops.... I play golf in the UK and work at 15+ tour events and the ProQuip gear I've had has performed the best for me... (including the soaking at Muirfield in 2002 and Birkdale this year)

I've tried / gone through alot of other stuff and I'd recomend the ProQuip waterproofs in a heartbeat.

But....If it looked good on me I could be tempted by the Galvin Green stuff, it is damn good....

I have been using ZR for a while now and have absolutely no complaints!! The last time I used the gear it was 48* and raining. I was wearing shorts and a long sleeve shirt under it and I was comfortable all day.

I really like the ZR and FJ offerings. However, I use Marmot Precip raingear. This rain gear is designed for lightweight backpacking. IMO, it is more comfortable in a wider range of weather settings. The pit zips are worth their weight in gold.

The rainflex range is tremendous. Lightweight yet windproof, sheds rain totally, and every bit as comfortable to swing in as my Zero Restriction Traveler gear. When I travel I take both, as in truth I simply can't say that I prefer one over the other. Last July in Scotland I wore the ZR traveler pants as shorts (ie with the bottom sections zipped off) and a short sleeve rainflex top.

In warm conditions (summer here in the US) I favor the ZR as it's looser cut allows better ventilation.

two minor caveats with the Rainflex. My first zip top was bought from my proshop with our club logo embroidered on the chest. the jacket was totally waterproof, but rain worked it's way in through the club logo's stitching (maybe a scotchguard spray would fix this?). Also a few years ago in Ireland it was blowing 30-40 mph, and I think in those conditions the ZR gear was quieter.

Guys,

I live in Scotland and have tried all suits, (Sunderland, Pro Quip, Galvin Green and so on). They all hold water and you eventually get wet.

The best stuff is a Swedish brand called Peak Performance. Last full suit I bought was the Luke Donald RXL suit, mega expensive and good. It's advertised as stretch though, not very. I bought a Peak Performance jacket. Unbelievable. This thing is like a spiderman suit on the stretch front. Taped seams, water retention 0%, noise- totally stealth.

I've seen ZR gear and this stuff Peak Performance is light years ahead of any other suit.

I voted "Other". The brand that seems to fit me best is Sunderland. They seem to have a mix of jackets, some made of a fabric with a bit more body to it (looks better for casual off-course wear) and some of the really whisper-soft ultra flexible fabric. I prefer the latter. And the cut of their stuff just works well for my roundish shape and not-too-long arms.

Of the two brands you mentioned, the FootJoy stuff fits me about the worst of anything I've tried. But hey, if it fits you that's probably a good choice.

I have a single-layer Goretex rain jacket (i.e. Goretex interior surface but no separate lining) by Zero Restriction. It is not quiet, as you mentioned. And it feels a bit awkward. But having worn it for a week in England back in June (a very cool week) it is the real deal. It plays much more comfortable than it looks, if that makes any sense. Just a thoroughly well sorted-out design in all the details. And my particular jacket is extremely waterproof and windproof given that it weighs almost nothing and folds up small. The ZR is good stuff. Once again, only if it fits you.

I have a beautiful FJ rainsuit... top of the line. Both a full zip long sleeve jacket and the half sleeve pullover. Really looks great. Problem is if you get any significant rain you get wet... it isn't waterproof. The other thing I have learned to hate about it is the lack of a zip up fly... pulling them down around your knees to take a leak is a pain in the something...

I picked up a Sun Mountain jacket (Rainflex) that is a stretchy fabric that is more waterproof and infinitely more comfortable and found a matching pair of black pants in a similar stretch fabric (Greg Norman Play Dry) that has a zip front... much more comfortable and waterproof than the FJ suit. Both pieces are black and look like they were made to go together... best part is I got both off of sale racks at over 50% off....

My FJ suit hangs in my closet unused, the other suit hangs in my garage ready to go, but mostly unused... it never rains here... seems like it only gets wet when I go on vacation...

I HATE playing in the rain, the stretch fabric has made it slightly more tolerable...

Three things that will drive me crazy about rain-suit pant. No zipper fly...what, am I not supposed to need to pee because it's raining? Elastic waist instead of a belt...rain pants that slide lower as the round goes on are not good. And rain pants that are too long...that's one pair of pants that can be "high water" for a reason.

I have a ZR suit back from when they first got into the business. Have not had anything since, been caught in it a couple of times and stayed dry the entire round. The inside of jacket lining has multiple snaps and it WILL hug your body anywhere you want. I'm with the others about getting wet, nothing protects forever, imo. Four hours should be easy for most rain gear though.

Edit: Found the Peak Performance site, all they list is black in medium size and currency conversion is $306 for jacket. My concern is no articulation, from the pic, compared to ZR stuff.

Check out Kartel suits (worn by Paddy Harrington). My cousin bought a suit when we were in Wales for the Ryder Cup....it was awesome both on and off the course. We was bone dry through that mess, when I was soaked after 8 hours in the rain in my sun mountain suit. I am not sure you will find it in a store here, but if you can snag one on-line, then do it for sure.
Nothing is better than Galvin Green!!I am a Scottish golfer myself and when the weather does go bad Galvin Green performs every time!In the summer months its actually quite dry but in the winter a good rainsuit is essential for warmth and dryness.Although you restricted the selection to FJ and ZR you can buy galvin green suits that suit you. You can buy a black suit which will look just like the FJ and ZR but performs so much better, especially the Paclite model. Or if you feel adventurous then there are some realy cool colour schemes to choose from. Check it out at galvingreen.com, you will not be dissapointed!!
Plus if you buy it when you are in UK/Scotland you can claim back VAT - 20% Galvin Green rainwear is very good, but it is not inexpensive. But it is worth it if you frequently or periodically play in rain.
