Ok everyone, we all seem to be falling asleep at the wheel here. We need to get more new threads going and focus on what we love...CLASSIC GOLF CLUBS!!! It's a shame that some of our bretheran have left us BUT, we all need to focus on making this section of GOLFWRX.COM the most civilized, educated, exciting and interesting corner on this site! Like Blutarsky said in ANIMAL HOUSE, "...Nothing is over until we decide it is. Was it over when the GERMANS bombed Pearl Harbor? HELL NO! (Germans? Forget it, he's rolling.) It ain't over now,'cause when the goin' gets tough........the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go! Come on!"

  • 2 weeks later...

My club used one of those Flightscope Launch Monitors on our 18th Tee yesterday for a "long drive" hole competition ... I'm sure these things are good for all sorts of things, but measuring distance is not one of them.

In my group ...

Player A 266.3 yards (actual 278)

Player B 263.4 yards (actual 275)

Player C 244.9 yards (actual 281)

I was Player C :)

In another group, a guy was "measured" at 282 yards and actually hit it 322 !

I'm glad I don't rely on any of this modern tech stuff for equipment purchase decisions, "evidence" of swing improvement etc etc

More than common resemblance:

Thats pretty sad! Why I never liked Scotty Cameron is because a lot of his "Creations" look so much like other putters. Sure some of Scotty Cameron's putters are very different, but examined closely many do simply resemble older offerings of other companies. Buy an old putter for $10 anywhere and if it feels good and works for you who cares who's name is on the sole. What works works and not who made it. If you want to pay $5000.00 for a putter and it makes you feel better and lowers your score then hooray for you, but if a $10 putter does the same... Just saying.

We are an odd lot, this species known as the human race. I was just reading another thread on a different part of WRX and was quickly reminded why I don't venture too far from the friendly confines of these environs.

What started out as a potentially uplifting thread became quickly derailed by a whole lot of negativity. Within four pages it had completely broken down into a series of accusations as to what the OP was really after.

It's just sad and I think it speaks to the human condition and the lack of satisfaction that so many seemingly have with their lives. Perhaps that is why we fail? It's the attitude that holds us back rather than any particular lack of skill. No wonder so many keep chasing an elusive goal with so little apparent satisfaction, that somehow that which they lack will make them whole, not unlike Ponce de Leon's search for the fountain of youth. It's fulfillment that they lack, but they appear to be looking in the wrong places. Maybe this is why we as individuals in a society have become so insulated/isolated from everyone else?

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Sco, you hit a memory trigger....

Wife and I have been watching the CSI tv series from season 1 forward, we're currently on season 11. Just watched an episode called "House of Hoarders." Near the end of the episode, the Ray Langston character, played by Laurence Fishburne, gives the following speech. Your post made me think of it, so I tracked it down and I'll inflict it on all of y'all (lol).

Seems to possibly fit with your point, perhaps...

The philosopher Erich Fromm, he forecast a society that was obsessed with possessions. He believed that human beings had two basic orientations: having and being. A person with a having orientation seeks to acquire and possess things, property, even people. But a person with a being orientation focuses on the experience. They derive meaning from exchanging, engaging and sharing with other people. Unfortunately, Fromm also predicted that a culture driven by commercialism, like the one we live in today, is doomed to the having orientation, which leads to dissatisfaction and emptiness. When you consider that, in 1960, there was no such thing as public storage in America. Today there’s over two billion square feet dedicated to it, makes you think he had a point. Things don’t have to mean everything, nor do they have to be devoid of meaning. They are one of the ways in which we can experience and enjoy life.

Agree.

We would all be happier if we stopped worrying about what someone else has.

We would all be happier if we learned to be satisfied with enough.

I think, at least for the most part, I have reached that point.

At least I know I'm happier.

Personally, I think I reached some sort of nadir the day I noticed that I owned three identical copies of a book called "How to Dejunk Your Life" ... :)

Acquisition of golf clubs of couse counts for a free pass on this sort of stuff ... (cool)

Yes. Selfies. Here's me doing something great, feeling good about myself and even a little bit better as I am showing you and it is cooler than what you are doing. Or eating. Or standing next to, whatever, there is an element of increasing personal relative satisfaction over others.

If I post something here about where I am playing, it is because I think the people here appreciate it, maybe feel happy for me

Through gritted teeth I am very happy for you with all the gems you lot pick up for peanuts in goodwills.

Too many people do worry about what others think, it is all just so much more explicit in our current society, but at the same time strangely repressed behind selfies, chatrooms, passive brags and Scotty Cameron headcovers...

Fair point. I guess golfers fall somewhere on a continuum. At one end, there are the guys with one set of clubs who play all the time. At the other end, are the collectors who buy but not to play. Basic economics and cashflow probably puts more of us in the classic section at the promiscuously acquisitive end of things - although I know we have at least a couple of shining examples of minimalism. I certainly don't think we have a given right to the moral high ground here over and above our more modern-minded counterparts.

As I guitarist, I have one instrument that I play almost exclusively and don't have a huge drive to collect more. Can't say the same for my golfing tendencies.

Obsessed with possessions? Naw. That is attaching to much sentimentality to what is ostensibly a sporting goods implement. No longer a minimalist, the condition has evolved beyond that. Nor a collector, what good is a "collection" if no one notices or particularly cares (in my real golf world). More of a gatherer. Find clubs, fix them, maybe play, admire briefly, then move them along to someone else. More of a cycling through. Because there are always "new" items of fresh curiosity yet to be discovered.

Furthermore, now consider it to be my anti-commercialism statement. How cheap can I find and reasonably play golf implements. Really do not want nor need ones that would bring pause for concern while striking a golf ball.

Alan, supply a link to the Dynapower thread you mentioned and I'll start posting this info there. Still not sure which one you're talking about. Need to take a pic, after some morning coffee. Will hold off posting here awaiting a more appropriate location.

GMJ - Nothing specific for the '58 3-D Wedge. In '57, Wilson listed the the following lofts: PW - 51*, DW - 53*, 3D - 53*, SW - 57*. After '58, club spec info disappears for several years.

What Your Golf Bag Says About You.

I thought the author had things pretty well figured based on his first bag assessment, but from there it kinda went downhill.

Maybe we should invite young Joe to spend some time with us on this part of WRX and give him an education.

Reminds me of a great Mark E. Smith story.

A British music paper had a running article where they would invite four guests along, put them on a long train ride and see what they chatted about.

Someone clearly not that familiar with The Fall invited Mark E. Smith to chat to a couple of pop stars and a music journalist. Smith arrives with a plastic bag carrying half a dozen cans of special brew (extremely strong lager predominantly for people of no fixed abode), they're all on the train and he gets stuck into his tins.

Train rumbles on, the rest are chatting, Smith hasn't said a word. Hours pass, everyone talking about all sorts, he hasn't said a thing.

The journalist starts claiming he can tell what people are like just by looking at them. Out of nowhere, Smith sparks up saying "I can do that".

Everyone sits up a bit, the journalist asks him, "Okay Mark. So what sort of person am I?"

Mark replies, "You're a C_^¥."

Well, it is that time of year when a man's fancy turns from tubed stereo equipment to swinging a small chunk of metal at a piece of plastic to knock it into a hole. I hope courses here should be opening before then end of April.

My only golf news over the last few months is I have passed over a half dozen used sets of golf clubs, including a set of bird-on-ball Spaldings as it was missing one iron.

All things considered though, I have had the absolute stuffing knocked out of me starting last July when it was my idea (fault) to change over our MIS at work. It has made for a very "quick" winter, though I am looking forward to getting outside.

I just need to finish a speaker refinishing project I am doing, and the 85 or so things on the "honey do" list, and I should be good to go golfing.

Glad to hear from you Scooter. I am reminded of you every time I go in the shop yep that bag tag still hangs in a prominent place. BTW the Palmer Balata balls are going to get a spin workout when August shows up down here because we are going to play vintage wedge balata spin Par 3 golf! I have never actually hit those balls but have putted with them quite a bit since you sent them. Pure feel coming off of a vintage blade putter

BTW I am building a Franken Stereo for the shop since my old one got fried a year ago in the big electrical storm we had. Picked up an old Techniques reciever today at GW for $9.99. I have a set of Peavy speakers my buddy Bo Bear gave me. I have a power booster from my Toyota Supra my wife totalled just gotta hook it up to a 120 to 12 DC supply. Might wire it up tonight after the Master's goes off. That booster will rock as in 250 watts

Hi Scooter, down here in the southern latitudes it's cooling down to the stage of being able to go out on the course and not be fried to a crisp. I have my vintage stuff ready for the first round. As we are descending into winter (tongue in cheek for the sub-tropics) I have 3 bags full of mixed clubs to sort out, sell some, keep some - that will be my winter project. Will still end up with 3 bags, regular, vintage, and collectable-to-look-atable. My brother arrives here at the end of May so I have a bit of time to practice. I've been buying up balls while they are on special and have enough to last into the 2030's if I live that long. :)

cheers

Stu, Nomad, nice to see you as well. Stu, I'd be careful with those Palmers - the way you describe your hitting the ball, you'll just as likely tear the cover off the poor thing. Glad the hear they haven't gone out of round though.

As usual, for me, golfing season really starts once the Masters happens. This year's definitely got my golf juices flowing.

First, the CBS special about Arnold Palmer hosted by Jim Nantz was superb. I found myself choking up a few times, most notably when Mr. Palmer talked about his relationship with Mr. Nickalus, and when Mr. Nickalus did likewise. As Jack said (and I'm writing as best as I can remember), "When a friend like Arnold dies, a piece of yourself dies along with him." It also reminded me of the type of person that is so rare in professional sports these days - the humble, respectful, professional gentleman.

Then the golf was equally compelling. I was rooting for Sergio simply as I like to see a story about redemption, to see how an emotional and talented golfer could finally conquer this emotion as age had mellowed him. You could see when he was interviewed throughout the tournament that he had matured a lot since his whiny and petulant youth. I will be watching with interest to see if losing this albatross will kickstart a late career renaissance, and if his new maturity and mental toughness will allow him to fulfill the promise he showed when he first turned professional.

Heck, Mr. Hogan won all nine of his majors between the ages 34 and 41.
