Callaway 2014 Apex Pro Irons: In-hand photos

Ordered the Apex standards (4-UW) with the Recoil 680 F4 ssx1 today! The most I have ever spent on a set of irons, but this year I decided I would thoroughly test a number of irons and shaft combinations and simply buy the absolute best fit regardless. Content.

USGA 3 Index and I've played both. The face in the regular Apex's is definitely hotter than the Apex Pro's and has a much larger sweetspot as well. The Pro's are a tad more compact with a slightly thiner top line. Both have a very solid feel and will let you know when you miss a shot though the regular Apex is far more foregiving, produces a higher ball flight, greater distance --- at least one club more.--- at less weight overall. The Pro's are good -- but IMO the Titleist AP-2's and Mizumo's have better feel and offer more clubhead type choices in 100% forgings. Was gonna purchase regular Apex's in 5i > 8i and Pro's in the 9i > PW but after playing both now going all regulars with a G25 hybrid for 3i > 4i to save the body wear and tear. Interesting that I found the 4i in either set to be very close but have no explanation why. Maybe the shafts were not proper or something. Maybe my swing is fouled up, too. :-) Both sets are impressive but unless someone's 5i CHS is 92mph+ and play on primarily firm / closely cropped fairways the regulars are the choice. The combination of ease out of varying lies or less than ideal fairways weighs in the regular Apex favor.

So did you end up going with a set of all Apex, no pros?

I got the Mizuno MP64's last year and love them. I have the C-Taper X flex, soft stepped once. 4-PW in MP64 and H4 in the 3i.

Of course now this year Titleist and Callaway come out with the AP2's and Apex Pros. They both look awesome to me.

I thought the older AP2's were a little thick in the top line for my tasting. Mainly when I looked at the PW and 9i but this years model looks great to me. As do the Apex Pros. I played the old X-forged (2005) until last year. I loved those irons but just couldn't fight back the itch for a new set after 8 years.

Here's a good comparison I had a guy that has a set of the xforged from last year so I let him compare my new pros and the pros kept similar launch angle and knocked around 750 rpms in spin also added a little ball speed. Both sets had x100 shafts I am getting the super preening blues to compare next

Tried both Apex and Apex Pro. Loved them both, but opted for the extra forgiveness of Apex. Set just arrived yesterday; 4-PW Apex KBS Tour V Stiff, +1/2", +1 wrap, new decade. Very pleased.

Supplemented with a nice Apex Pro AW - same shaft and setup as above.

I just ordered the Apex Pros (4-Pw) as well, with 6.0 PXIs, + 1/2", 3deg UP...coming from i15s with x100s and same length/lie...I've been wanting to get into a forged set since my 735.CMs back in mid 2000s. I will post some pictures and thoughts when they arrive early next week!

Just got my Apex Pros delivered yesterday. Drove straight to the course, took the plastic off, put them in the bag and headed to the range. They felt even more pure than I remembered. I got 4-PW, 1/2" over, 2* upright, C-Taper 130X soft stepped.

I had a little bit of buyers remorse because I love my MP64's. Then I hit the Pros yesterday and that went away. I love looking down at every iron. That is rare for me.

After a lot of research I pulled the pin leaving my Mizuno MP 57 for Callaway Apex irons. I also gave consideration to Titleist AP2 but the I liked the extra forgiveness the Apex gave me. I got fit today at 2nd swing in Minnetonka Minnesota. I went in wanting to test the KBS Tour V, the C taper lite, and the PX 95. I fully expected to settle on the Tour V. The fitting cart didn't have the C taper lite but had the regular C tapers. Much to my surprise the C tapers performed the best. Longest carry, longest total distance best ball speed, best launch angle and the proper spin rate. The heavier shaft the 120 gram S flex really fit my swing the best. I got them 1degree upright. I can't wait for them to come. Scott at 2nd swing did a great job fitting me. He explained the whole philosophy of lite shafts isn't the same for everyone. After I settled on the C tapers I went back and hit the Tour V again and the original diagnosis was correct. The stiff tip on the C tapers really brought my dispersion closer and a nice smooth feel.

Don't scrub it off with a 3m pad - you'll have a swirl in the middle. And you'll never be able to even it out in the corner/edges of the cavity.

Hit it with blue-b-gone or blue-away. One of those solvents used to remove blue'ing from heat. Or if it's dye'ed or ink, use acetone.

I wouldn't scrub it away with anything abrasive.

Played my first round today. With 5-PW with UST Recoil 110 F4 flex. No unusual markings after one round. And these things are fantastic. Really impressed with Recoils. Dispersion tighter than steel and distance is 1/2 club to 1 club longer.

I left my MP64's for Apex Pros. I actually felt a little guilty because I was loving my MP64's and hitting them well.

Played my first full round with the Apex Pro's yesterday. Muddy course, 20-30MPH winds with sideways rain mixed in. Everyone quit after 9 holes and I kept going. I just wanted to keep hitting my irons.

It stopped raining on 11 and my buddies came back out. On 17 I just flushed a low 7i into the wind and my buddy says "holy cow those things sound so pure. You nutted that." He plays the X Forged from last year and loves them.

I felt like I could easily work the ball both ways and the feel on solid hits is amazing. Makes you feel like you get that tour pro snap sound on pure strikes.

It took over 3 months to make a decision, but all good things come to those who wait - and these clubs are much better than good

Oh man that sucks. Did you call and talked to them? When I ordered mine last month, I got an email that my irons were on back order and it would take another 2 weeks before delivery. So I called them and they said the grip I chose were not in stock and it would take 2 weeks before they got more grips in. So I picked another grip and I had my clubs delivered in less than 7 days.

So you might want to call them to find out. It is my understanding they are not having production issues and that they can handle all these orders.

Golf stocks in general look about as attractive an investment as airline stocks.

Ordered Apex Pros 5-9,P with Recoil earlier this week. My understanding is that they will be built in Australia so hopefully it won't be a long wait.

Has anyone had an issue with the rubber insert falling off from the back of the club? Have seen some reviews stating this is an exceedingly common issue, along with the finish wearing away excessively fast...

Would love some confirmation from experienced WRX'ers, as there are just too many trolls in this world for me to know what to believe on the internet anymore!!

I got my apex pros with kbs tour v x shafts 2 weeks ago and played 6 rounds with them last week on a golf holiday in Spain.

AWESOME!

Played my best golf on the year and hit so many greens in reg. God I love these irons.
