Costco Callaway golf set-10 piece - need your help

Hey guys,

A good buddy of mine is graduating from northwestern with his master's in August. His wife wanted to get him a set of clubs as a graduation gift. She didn't want to spend much more than 500 bucks and asked me to help with finding something. He doesn't play much, a few times a year with a set he borrows from his in laws. Anyways, I know the go to answer is to shop the bst, however since these are a graduation gift she would want them to be brand new clubs. I was in Costco today and saw these. Could I do much better than this for 500? All I would need to do then is find a bag and give her a couple dozen balls from my ridiculously large stash. Thoughts?

Tell her to let him pick it out himself. Get him a gift card to whatever local golf stores you have and let him go hit some. You can also tell her that you will seek out and find a demo day at local courses to try some things out.

Then he can choose.

A guy with a masters from northwestern will soon be able to afford something better than the box set.

There are for sure worse box sets out there but I would start with a bag and a putter and then get used irons and woods.

I know that is what should be done however she wants to buy them and have them for him to open, so that's not an option. You have to remember that majority of the golf world doesn't think that way and especially when they only go a couple times a year. I'm asking though under the premise that you have approximately 500 to spend putting together a new set, could I do much better than this set?

Absolutely nothing wrong with this box set. If they are what I see on their site, they are X2 Hot clubs with Odyssey putter. Good clubs and good value!

Maltby KE4 14* 3w , Axe Excaliber R flex tipped 1"
RBZ 25* hb; RBZstage 2 19* hb
Mizuno MP30 5 - PW, AXE Excaliber stiff, Hogan Apex PC E Wedge (50*) TT DG s300

Those clubs are a nice gift for a non-golfer. They are shiny and new. They match. They are a name brand. they fit your budget. You aren't gonna do much better than that. If the guy starts playing more than 2-3x a year then he can look to upgrade at a later time.

Agreed for someone who doesn't play very often that has everything he needs.

That's exactly it. It's a gift, so they needed to be new and shiny not used and let's face it, brand name means something to a non golfer. I just wasn't sure if there was anything I should know about these that should cause me to steer clear or if there was a better way to piece together a set while keeping that price range

They are what they are...a great starter set for someone who is getting started in the game. Throw in a 4 pack of those leather Callaway gloves (love those myself) and the 4 dozen pack of the Callaway Hex Soft balls and he is good to go for the season.

Ping G400 Testing G410.  10.5 set at small -
Ping G410 3, 5 and 7 wood

Ping G410 5 hybrid-not much use.

Seems like a solid choice for new and one-stop-shop. Another to consider is the Top Flite Tour set for $399 from Dicks... all the clubs except the putter are probably just as good, the bag is pretty decent too, and there may be some coupons around to bring the price down a little more too... main thing you'll lose is the Callaway name.

Yeah and I think I'd like to keep the Callaway name. Makes non golfers feel like they are playing a high quality set

The advantage to Costco is that, should he not like them for any reason, there is that thing call the 100% money back guarantee. Try getting that from Dick's or someplace.

Plus, while you're at Costco, get him some of their great Kirkland Vanilla ice cream, buy yourself a hot & soda for $1.50, stock up on the Kirkland bacon, etc.

x2. I don't think she could go wrong getting him that set.

I think I would go for getting a whole 15pc set...bag and all from Tour Edge

http://www.touredge.com/products/bazooka460blacksetmens.asp

My concern with tour edge is that outside of those in the know, tour edge is probably thought of as a knock off brand. Trust me, I love my tour edge E8 beta driver that's my backup, but most people who golf a few times a year would think it's a Kmart special

I was thinking that as well from a return policy perspective

Perfect for a guy that doesn't play that much. Everyone knows Callaway, so it not like he is playing with knock offs.

I think it would be a perfect gift.

My wife, and any family members, are not allowed to buy me golf equipment - I'm too picky (like I'm sure a lot of us are in this forum).

Callaway starter set is not the go to purchase. Like the one guy said, let him pick, and like the other guy said, he'll be making money off that degree to buy something better down the road.

My first custom set was a game improvement iron, and within 6 months I was looking for an upgrade.

Those look like great clubs to get started with.

To those saying let him pick, you won't do much better for $500 new, and as he's so new he'd probably be asking his more well versed buddy here for help anyway. And if he's making more money down the road and playing more and wants something different I'm sure he won't feel too bad about replacing his $500 starter set.

I wish I had clubs like that for my first set, I had a 7 piece northwestern set from wall mart! Driver and 3 wood, 3-5-7-9 irons, and a putter. Why northwestern thought I needed a 3 iron more than a sand wedge is beyond me lol. I think even back then they were $199, so $499 for these sounds like a steal!
