Iron shafts too weak? Need some suggestions

Hey guys,

I feel like my iron shafts may be too weak. I don't have a reputable person to go see close to me so I come to you guys.

I have a 92 mph 6 iron swing speed, I use it for my 195 yard shots. I was "fitted" with the Mizuno optimizer thing a few years ago and was fitted into X flex soft stepped once for most shafts. Which I was told basically any good stiff flex shaft off the shelf (KBS Tour S, DG S300). I recently picked up some Srixon Z 756 with Nippon Pro Modus Tour S. My normal flight is slight draw but I find I am hooking/pulling more with these shafts. Is this a sign they may be too weak or light? If it helps, I used DG S300 most of the time and love those shafts...

Thanks in advance

yah? I just checked their weight, 114g compared to DG S300's, I didn't think I'd notice much difference but I guess there is enough.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try some tape. I thought perhaps just a bad round and I was trapping the ball or coming to far inside but after a few rounds, I thought maybe the shaft was the issue. I was on trackman and the numbers were sound, no over the top trapping or anything wonky... definitely swing these a little faster than DG S300, I am assuming cuz they're lighter.

Go to the x in the same shaft. It’s not that strong and adds a few grams. That swing speed you can handle the x straight in with no issues.

The Modus S is fine. It just has a softer butt than youre used to, and a higher balance point. Lead tape or tip weights will solve. Dont need X. We swing about the same. I've been where you are.

15 grams of difference between those 2 shafts. For almost all golfers that will more than likely have an impact. Shaft weight is extremely important, I would say most important as our bodies will notice differences in shaft weight quicker than anything else. Adding lead tape to the shaft or even the clubhead would certainly help get the feel back, but adding lead tape to just the clubhead could effect shaft flex and impact/delivery.

You need over 20-25 grams of lead tape to even begin to mess with flex profile. Non-issue.

To really know why, we need to isolate and test each factor, but might end up with that its more than 1 factor...

Start with Shaft WEIGHT, it is the most important after play length.

Simply add 15 grams of lead tape head to grip side on the underside of the shaft so you dont see it from address. Set a mark about the middle of the shaft, and the same on the middle of the lead tape and align those 2 marks.

Next is like HackDaddy suggest, (if shaft weight alone could not do it), try some added head weight.

Shaft flex and profile is mostly a feel factor, and too soft is most often better than to strong since flex works as a trigger for how much power we put on the club, so unless you are of those who need to speed it up a little, dont go stronger if they feel good, but if shaft weight and head weight tuning cant fix it....try stiffer

But start with a shaft weight tune up, its the way to go to find the right shaft weight if a change of shafts is needed.

For irons, 7 gm is all it takes to get the equivalent of a soft step. However, yes, that is still only a very subtle change - not something most need to worry about. 14 gm (soft stepped x2) is generally going to be noticeable to most but still not what I'd call significant. But it all depends on how sensitive the player is and how good a fit the shaft profile might have been before the head weight is increased before you can really make a determination on how important it might end up being.

headed to get some lead tape now! Hopefully that helps or I may have to change shafts. I really like the feel of these shafts though, just need a bit more control

Then i hope you can fix it with lead tape, and accept it on your clubs, many dont want lead tape, but they dont understand the benefits it has for tuning, it simply the best stuff we can possibly ask for, and we should use it for fine tuning of both shafts and heads, we can even use it as counterweight under a putter grip if we lay it in a spiral pattern. Get more than one roll when you order.....

Funny, that's about what I added. I'm either at 10 or 12g. I'll eventually add tip weights, now that Ive figured out the right swingweight.
