Golfers in Austin, TX

Looking for playing partners
I moved to Austin about 7-8 months ago after getting married and started working. A lot of my golfing friends from college live in DFW or Houston so I really have no golfing buddies here in Austin. I am about a 13 index player and usually play up at Avery Ranch, Falconhead, or River Place. I'll occasionally hit up the Jimmy Clay/Roy Kizer courses if I need some confidence booster rounds ha.

If you live in the Austin area and play golf often, feel free to reach out. I'm just looking to find some decent guys to play with so I don't have to deal with getting paired up with the rando hackers around here image/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Keep my contact handy next time you are looking. Best time for me is Friday afternoons, and Avery, Teravista, Star, Falconhead and Cowan Creek are my normal rotation.

I am in Austin for about a week visiting my sister. Was about to make a post on a good course to practice at here in the round rock/ north Austin area. Can't play because of a stress fracture in my foot but can putt and work on my short game. Any recommendations on a course in the area with a decent short game area?

Teraverde has decent reviews and is about 15 minutes away? How is falcon head?
  • ReidmanReidman Austin, TXMembers Posts: 768 ✭✭
Falconhead has the best short game area....but that is about an hour from Round Rock, because of all the stop lights.

Teravista is pretty good....great putting green, chipping area is decent. Avery Ranch is close also, decent putting greens and chipping.

From the courses I usually go to, Falconhead has the best putting surfaces and chipping areas. I know they aerated like last week so the greens might not be in as good of shape as they usually are, but they are quick and roll true.

Thanks for the input! I didn't realize Falconhead was that far away from me. Looks like Teravista is only about 15-20 away, so I'll check that one out. Any word on Forest Creek? It looks to be about the same distance?

Been meaning to post this for the Austin Golfers.. so here goes

    1) If you want to play in a league google austin golf association (AGA). They play on the public courses and its a good way to meet new Golfing buddies. I am a member and its a lot of fun.

    2) Check out the Harvey Penick golf campus. Nice 9 hole track. Great practice for your iron game and its a challenging track as well. Also you will be supporting the local first tee organization. Feel free to drop off old equipment etc as donation.

    3) The have a players booklet for $100 that lets you play some of the premier courses for just $25. Great deal and you get to play most of the Austin courses.

    http://www.thefirstt...&NS=GAU&APP=106

    course list:

    Alsatian Golf Club

Apple Rock Golf Course - Horseshoe Bay Resort

    Avery Ranch Golf Club

    Berry Creek Country Club

    Blackhawk Golf Club

    Bridlewood Golf Club

    Crystal Falls Golf Course

    Delaware Springs

    Falconhead Golf Club

    Forest Creek Golf Club

Golf Club of Texas at Briggs Ranch

    Great Hills Country Club

    Harvey Penick Golf Course

    Jimmy Clay Golf Course

    Lakecliff Country Club

Lakeway Country Club - Live Oak

    Lakeway Country Club - Yaupon

    Lantana Golf Club

    Onion Creek Club

    River Place Country Club

    Riverhill Country Club

    Riverside Golf Course

    Roy Kizer Golf Course

    Star Ranch Golf Club

    Twin Creeks Country Club

    Wolfdancer Golf Club

    4) If enough WRXers get's the booklet we can have a get together to play one of the nice course like AppleRock?

    5) You might end up playing with some good golfers at Clay/Kizer.. I usually play as a single and have been paired up with other single scratch golfers. But then, I usually am there early morning before the hacks show up image/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Teravista just punched their greens, holes the size of a pencil and sanded. Practiced there today. Forest Creek is a placement course and challenging if you don't put it in the right spots. Greens are "okay". Avery Ranch is in FANTASTIC shape, my playing buddy last Sunday wanted to lie down in the fairway to take a nap....a green carpet! Terrific layout, too.

Keep me in mind for golf sometime . . . I'll play Teravista, Avery, Star Ranch or Forest Creek. Want to play Grey Rock south, too.

Sorry man . . . .we've got a foursome at Avery on Sunday. Just found this thread today and the tee- time was already made with some folks I play golf with.

I go down and play at Barton Creek 3-4 weekends per year. Usually stick to the Fazio courses, but will occasionally go play Lakeside. Avoid the Crenshaw course as much as I can. Will be down a couple of times this summer, but not until July and August. Sometimes have a spot open for a late Thursday round and get to play at a discount.

I don't know exact dates, but mid July will be my next trip. Be glad to have you join me/us.

Absolutely, keep me in the loop on that. I'd love to join on Barton Creek for sure

EP, I have my weekly skins game at Star Ranch Sunday so will be out there but can't join you. You can come out meet up on the range, grab a walk on round and then join us for drinks afterwards. My tee time is 2:30 and I'll be on the range/putting green around 1.

BTW Steve, Star is in FANTASTIC shape. It is on the edge of Round Rock and Hutto, as good as Teravista ever is (and not recently punched) and has a great short game area with 4 different greens for chipping and putting.

Oh yeah and as EP said Falconhead just punched last week. If its anything like it was last year when they did a punch, I'd stay away for a while...they sand heavily with course sand and either 'forget' to or won't mow close at all. Some of the worst punching I have seen locally.

Little late on this thread, but Delaware Springs in Burnet, is completely worth the drive. It is cheap and amazing.

Its too hot to play in Austin right now. Golfnow has some insane deals cause of the heat and they aptly titled as 'hot deals'.

I cannot bring myself to go out and play thou... I don't mind the high 90's, but 105 is no fun.

I am a member there. Just joined 3-4 months ago after being a member at grey rock previously.

Lost Creek is Better in the following areas (everything).

    -Course Condition

    -Staff

    -Range and Practice Areas

    -Pools

    -Tennis

-Gym is nothing to write home about, but they have one.

-Mens loker room is awesome. Pool table, shuffle board, free golden tee, tv's, and a full bar

-More challenging than Grey Rock (i think an easy track) from the tips, it's a much tighter pick your spots course.

    -Restaurant

-Members....This is a big one. I have literally met 1 person that I do not care for. Everyone is great, down to earth, and a lot are Barton Creek defects who couldnt handle the snobs.
  • epmoniesepmonies EP Members Posts: 319 ✭✭
Lost Creek is an older country club but it has a great feel to it. It's tucked away in Lost Creek (obviously) and the course plays pretty tough. I've only played there a number of times because I'm not a member; Just go with a friend who is a member and play as a guest.

I also agree on the heat comment. It is absolutely scorching right now so I'm trying to stay away unless I play a 7am tee time. As always, let me know if any of you guys would like to go out and play sometime.

Yes! I love winter golf in Austin... the courses are deserted and as long as it ain't raining, I'm out there even if it is in the 30's

anyone know when MoWilly will reopen? I read that the club house will only get done early next year, but I was hoping that the course would open earlier.

MoWilly - I heard December from a buddy of mine that works there and I don't think Lions is scheduled to close until 2019.

I'd love to meet up with some of you guys to play, but I'm a hacker and by what's been posted in this thread, most are scratch players and want to avoid playing with guys like me, oh well...
