Top Flite Tour Wedge?

EMgolf

Recommended Posts

I was walking through my local GG yesterday and ran across these in the wedge section. Besides having the regular grooves it appears like the entire face of the wedge was spin milled like a putter? It seems like this would create a whole lot more spin but there has to be a reason why the big wedge companies are not doing this, right?

Deep face milling could be deemed non-conforming (Appendix II rule 5) which is why major OEMs minimize wedge face milling. I am sure we can all agree that the majority of people that buy a Top Flite wedge are not concerned with whether or not it conforms to USGA rules.

The face seemed to have the normal current-day milling. It seems to stand out more due to the deep black color, but should be conforming. But I have been wrong before ...

I picked up a 54 and a 60 for 80 bucks and they feel great to me. For someone who has no capability to put spin on the ball, I feel like I can produce spin with these wedges. Great buy in my opinion

Yes, they do feel very nice. Good luck with them !

Stopped into GG today, and was hitting the 50,52,54,56,58,and 60. These wedges all felt great! Solid feel, not harsh, and had a nice bite to them. On sale 2 for $80.

Been looking for cheap, basic, dependable wedges. Anyone know how these compare with the Wilson Harmonized wedges? More options than Wilson which is nice.

I have one of these wedges in a 56 and I've always liked it. There was a sticker on it when I bought it that said it conforms to the USGA groove ruling. I picked up some used Vokeys this fall. Compared to my Vokey SM (60 degree non-conforming ) and SM4 (54deg & 64deg) wedges, the milling on the Top Flight looks and feels more aggressive. The shaft on the Top Flight feels a little more "flexy". When the weather warms up I'll compare them. After thinking about it, I wonder if the aggressive milling is designed to be more grabby on the harder "distance" balls because it looks like it would shred a tour ball.

[/quote] I think the Harmonized wedges spin great and have a soft feel to them. Have a 52,56,60 in black, great bang for the buck.

Look closely my friends. Callaway owns Spaulding/TopFlite. They look a lot like 'C' grinds to me. But so what? Two for $80.00.? For most of us they are probably just fine. I do agree with OP who said the name might turn some off. But again, so what?

Callaway sold the Top Flite brand to Dicks in April of 2012.

Sorry, thanks for the heads up. Poor old Spaulding. Had to be one of the oldest names in sporting goods. TImes change. Hey, Maybe Dick's will bring back Hogan. On second thought, no just let it RIP.

Callaway sold the Hogan brand to Perry Ellis in 2012 as well. All Callaway holds from the 2003 Spaulding Golf acquisition is the intellectual property and the Strata brand.

I've been a bit of a wedge ho this season. I've been playing a score 47 degree, Vokey SM4 52/07 and 64/07 deg and a Ping Tour S Rustique 56/12. I've got 40+ rounds on all these wedges except for the Scor. I've got a good feel for the wedges and (knock on wood) my wedge game has been the strong part of my game lately. My Top Flite Tour Wedge has been sitting with my back up set of clubs the whole season. I took my back up set out for a round recently and put the TF Tour into play. As my game has improved compared to last year when this was my gamer, I have to say I am pretty impressed with the TF Tour. It has a soft forged feel to it on pure strikes. Its easy to line up and its has good turf interaction. It definitely imparts a lot of spin out of the rough. Every shot I made out of thick grass would hit the green bounce and screech to a halt. I can only guess that this is due to the groove and face milling design. I compared it to my SM4 and Tour S. The TF has wide shallow grooves with a very pronounced face milling. The Milling on the SM4 and Ping is much more subtle and the grooves are narrower and deeper. Needless to say, I picked up a 52/08 and 60/08 from Dick's. Grand total for both? $70. Less than what I paid for my 56 deg last year. Hard to resist at that price. Not bad for a forged wedge.Sadly I don't think these wedges will be around for much longer with the way Dicks is struggling.
