Do I have a set of Seve's Clubs?

Recommended Posts

Greetings all. I'd like to think I am somewhat knowledgable in the golf club world. Been collecting- restoring clubs for 30 years. Old Wilsons Hogans Mac persimmons,Putters and about everything inbetween.

May be the only person on the planet that always liked Sounder clubs.

I played Sounder Tour Stars in high school in the 80's. Still have them. Have the Tour Limited SBIV set as well. And countless other sets through the years.

Recently picked up this set... and have not seen another like it.

I know Seve played Dunlop internationally, and was sponsored by Sounder here in the states. And never knew if he actually used the sounder blades, since they were never really offered (retail) in his prime.

Going through my old Maltby Book for club Identifications- this set exists nowhere. They are thinner, and a different shape than the SBIV Blades, Dynamic Gold X-200 shafts with the Sounder Black/green ferrules, and the Green grips as seen in the ad photo.

They are beauties for sure and in fantastic shape 1-PW. Thoughts ?

Well actually there are two of us that liked them :) . Played Sounders for a few years. Traded them in for can't remember what. Have kicked myself to this day for doing so. Beautiful looking club. Still have the one iron at least.

I would think a pro's of clubs would have more bag chatter. My brother still uses a Sounder putter.

I remember reading somewhere recently (probably on here) that Seve owned stock in Sounder, and that the blades he used were in fact Sounder blank heads with "Slazenger" stamped on the back to satisfy the terms of his endorsement deal with them.
A professor at the business school where I was an adjunct at, and he was a golf historian(He knew more minutiae than anyone that I've ever met, LMAO) said the part about Seve havin a piece of Sounder, though I hadn't heard the Slazenger part, as he was not prone to unfounded rumors, I took it as fact.

Also, Seve(and Sir Nick)played the Mizzy TN-87's from '87-89, though Seve bagged em longer, and they were in his bag during that period

I remember the Sounder TV ads that Seve did with Tommy Bolt and Andy North.

Probably have it on one of the zillion old VHS tapes I have, but it would be a complete accident to ever find it.

wasnt craig stadler in them also?

No. Craig was with Spalding around that time, and prior to that he carried the bag of an California company called Rainbow Sports which was the first company to sell T-Line putters.

The early Sounder metal woods had "Pittsburgh Persimmon" on the toe right at the same time the early Taylor Mades did. Never did hear the story of how that happened, or how it was resolved. There's currently an example on Ebay.

i also have a early metal sounder driver . looks just like most early metal woods. also have a rainbow t line putter. these were ahead of their time in weight. very heavy putter as the norm today. i gave the sounder star irons to a neighbor who has never played them even once. i might hatch a plan to get them back just cause they are so rare now.

I have a 1985 Sounder catalog in which Seve is featured, no catalog for 1986 and the 1987 catalog I have doesn't mention him at all.

I had forgotten that the persimmon woods that went with the 1985 Tour Limited SBIV irons were designed by Joe Powell.

I had also forgotten that Gary Player was on Sounder's staff at that time.

Yes. I remember at one of the Maltby schools I attended in the early 90's how they told us of the different nameplates they would put on Old MacGregor woods to satisfy endorsement deals...and the like. So not a shock.

Here and side by sides with the Sounder SBIV irons........ they are 2 different sets. Of not the SBIV have pinned hosels. The plain sounder set has no pins.

Man o man those are sweet

We followed Seve at the 1995 Masters ... What a shotmaker !

That set reminds me of irons that one of my teammates played in uni golf in 91-93 .. Solid sticks, great feel at impact

Also, the hosels are longer on the un named set- than the SBIV models. Considering the blades are totally different than the SBIV, and no identifying marks- plus no mention of them anywhere---Think the fact finding will start lol.... Now to find someone who was around in that era.

As far as the 1987 specs, Believe by then, he was no longer with Sounder. I would guage these to be 1984 era?

 • 1 year later...

Long awaited Update after a year.

These are 'Seve" Blades. This particular set were Seve's personal grind heads. That was Built for Andy North. All Upright and Overlength.

Seve had 2 different heads that looked like this. The others would be stamped 'Slazenger" on the sole for European Events.

Through good fortune, I was able to Not only find the person who built them. But able to purchase another set of heads as well :)

Wow that's very cool! I usually hate these threads because there's never any resolution! Nice to get some here. Amazing that you found the builder And another set of heads to boot! Well done.

Greg Norman played the MacGregor 985 Design "Signature" Mac-Cobras, which were done by Don White.....

Check the Sports Illustrated cover photo from April, 1996... "Agony at Augusta"

Norman also played the MacGregor "Diamond Back" irons also ground by Don White in the 2008 British Open Championship.

Copies of both these Norman sets have shown up on E^%Y recently....

Right. Know he played the 985 versions of the Cobras and the DW Diamond Backs.

The Cavity set he also played ... Not exactly sure of the year. Obviously not for a long time. I do remember him playing the TRD very very briefly when he came back to Cobra

They will also be coming with a set of Muirfields built for Greg along with a set of his Spalding Forged as well

And yes. The Andy Beans are Mac VIPs

Imagine the Cobra Cavities are the Mac CB92 blades as well

All I know is the builder told me Greg could screw up a wedge better than anyone :)

The set of Muirfields that were Greg's show that as well ! Lotta lead tape.
