Can you guys explain drop?

Height differential between where the heel and forefoot sit.

Recent studies have suggested that a large drop is one of the culprits in common running injuries because it encourages a heavier heel-striking gait. During the minimalist-running-shoe revolution of the past few years, many new training shoes have been designed with 4 to 10mm heel-toe drops, and a new category, "zero drop" shoes, has emerged at 0 to 4mm. Gait analyst Jay Dicharry, director of the Speed Clinic at the University of Virginia's Center for Endurance Sport, says running in shoes with a low drop is ideal because they put the body in an optimal running posture and increase stability.

Think about these Nikes with 12mm drop. That's basically 1/2 inch drop per 12 inches. If you had a bedroom floor in your house that dropped 6 or 7 inches from wall to wall, that's basically the same slope. Quite a slanted floor, right?

Would you rather swing a golf club on that floor or a level floor? Sure you could adjust to either one, but which would be more intuitive?

Nice illustration.

Typical running shoes (and most other shoes for that matter) are in the neighborhood of a 12mm drop, or a half inch difference between heel and toe. Most people are just used to this and do not think about other options. In the past several years, all kinds of new shoes with lower drops have launched, everything from the notorious Vibram Five Fingers to the Hoka One-one, all of which have drops in the 4 to 0 mm range. Proponents of lower drop shoes say that it puts the body in a more natural position and puts the stress of running onto the muscles and tendons instead of the bones and joints (they say large, padded heels contribute to heel striking which does not distribute forces as evenly).

My n=1 experience is that the lower drop is better for me. I've been athletic my entire life, and have played golf for 40 years. The new zero drop shoes are great. I have a pair of the Skechers GoGolf and the Puma Faas Lite Mesh. Both are absolutely wonderful and I am eagerly waiting for the New Balance Minimus to launch for another option. True Linkswear started the trend, and while I really like the company and the shoes, they just do not fit my feet or I would be wearing them. For me, as long as there are lower drop options that is all I will wear. I even replaced my loafers with a lower drop shoe as they wore out.

My golf shoes are zero drop, my running shoes are 4mm, and I am very happy. Golf-wise, I feel much more balanced and stable, even thought the Puma shoes are not much more than socks with a little traction. My swing feels more powerful and more under control and my feet and legs feel fresh after walking 18. For a little back door brag, my brother and I both broke 80 from the tips at Fox Hollow in Colorado this summer, me in my Pumas and him in his Five fingers, so it is possible to play decent golf and move the ball out there without playing in traditional golf shoes. He ended up trying the Footjoy MProjects and likes them. They are in the 7mm range I think.

If you have not tried minimal style shoes, you will need to ease into them. They use different muscles in you feet and legs that take some time to strengthen. Some people may never like them. That is ok ... as there are as many shoes out there as there are feet to fill them.

I bought the shoes because they were so comfortable. I currently own ecco biom sport and biom zero shoes which have minimal drops. These were a bit more and felt different but I didn't think it it was going to affect anything. However, after hitting the range and playing a round with them, they definitely affect my swing. Everything felt ever so slightly off and I kept hitting close to the toe. Didn't think it was the shoes at all until I took them off at the range and viola no more toe shots and everything back to normal. Alas, these will sit in the closet. Never thought the drop on these shoes along with the thicker sole would be a factor.

I bought these for $100 at Golfsmith this weekend and like them so far. The comfort is not like mindblowing comfort, just pretty ordinary in my opinion. I like the clean design and overall they seem well made. One thing I've noticed is that I can really feel my weight on my toes or forward during my setup, which I like for a nice athletic setup. For people who like to have their weight more centered or perhaps more back, it might be a bit difficult to do with these shoes as the weight naturally falls forward.

I have 2 pairs. My first pair (white/gray) are very comfortable however the grip has worn out pretty quickly. I have about 20 rounds on them. The most recent time I wore them I was slipping in wet grass. Disappointed because I really like the comfort and the look of the shoe.
