When Will the Next Set of Taylor Made Irons be Released / Clubs Recs for a 9 Index

New around here...I'm going to be going in for a fitting for new irons fairly soon. From what I know and have hit in the past, I will likely be going with the Taylor Made 790s or potentially the PXG 311P. I'm a 9 index but playing better than that right now and have been improving. I'm tall (6'5") with a high swing speed and a fairly long hitter at about 290-310 off the tee. Now that you have the background here are a few questions:

1) I noticed the TM 790s were announced around August of 2017. Does Taylor Made release new irons every year around this time? Does anyone have any insight on when an update to the 790s will be released?

2) Based on the above info, are there any other clubs I should consider?

3) What other help / insight do you have for going into my fitting? I believe I need something that is 2 inches over with a weighted shaft but I will take the fitters guidance on that.

FYI - I have had the Ping G25s for the last 5 years and I need something new and better

1. TaylorMade's product cycle is approximately two weeks.

2. The Mizuno MP-18 and JPX 900 irons are very popular on this site.

3. Hit off grass. If you're dead set on the PXGs or P790s and they'll make you happy, go for it. But you almost certainly won't get full value from your fitting if you limit yourself to those two options.

First of all, I'd echo the idea that if you go to a fitting, go without a preconceived notion of what's best or what you need. If the fitter is really good, let him do his work. If you don't like the results, don't buy clubs, but go with an open mind.

Take your G25s with you, of course, and hit them in front of the fitter to get a baseline. Talk to him about things like your default miss, what you're looking for in a new club, and so on. Ask him questions as he works you thru various options; what is he seeing that he likes, and what is he seeing that he dislikes? If he's really good, he'll tell you that stuff anyway, and he'll like talking about it.

Finally, differentiate in your mind between the two things that you mention in your last sentence: "new and better". There is a LOT of newer stuff than G25s, of course; Ping alone has come out with four generations in the G series, and there are IMO important differences between even the G30s and the G25s. And the G700 is a completely different club than anything else labeled G. That said, whether or not any of those will be "better" for you is an open question. I've gone to fittings a left with my same club(s), but the peace of mind of knowing that I had what I needed. I've also gone to fittings thinking that I knew what the results would be, only to find something completely different.

Good luck; I hope you are fortunate enough to work with somebody who is really good; that's as much fun as playing golf.

Ok thanks for the feedback. I will certainly hit a number of clubs those are just the two that I like best that I have hit thus far.

Does anyone know when approximately the next generation of Taylor Made Irons will be released? I don't want to buy the 790s only for a new iron to be introduced within a few months.

Thanks

LF i do not know when the new irons will be announced but I have a feeling that the p790 will be a poor fit for your game. It will also give you gapping issues moving to your wedges. P790 is a distance iron and you do not need any more of that in my opinion. Good luck and enjoy the process of new irons. I would take a peek at mizuno mp-18sc, ping i210, Callaway x forged, tm 750 or 770. But if you are going to be unhappy with your purchase when new stuff comes out you should probably wait.

FWIW, There's a thread here where a member here (I think popeye) hit the Maltby TS2 irons alongside the P790s and much preferred the Maltby's.

Your wallet will thank you too, as you could get a set custom made to your specs for less than half of what the TMs would cost you.

Mind you, if you're also considering PXG then maybe price isn't really a factor :)

i love my p790s and have had them since late last year. I have not had any issue with fliers or other issues everyone else has had. You need to hit them off grass with a TM to really figure out if they are good for you.

You are probably slightly higher SS than me, but my driver SS 108-111 based on trackman. YMMV

Just had a fitting last week. The irons on the top of my want list were P790's. Tried 5-10 different irons. Except Pings. Never been a big fan of Pings. Fitter told me to try the them, now I have a set of i210's on order. Was just shooting darts with them. I wish the fitter had me try the i500's. Look like a direct competitor to the 790's. Very happy with my decision on the i210's though.
