Nicklaus - it’s impossible to release the club too early

From what I know (which isn’t much) there are 2 components generally associated with the release - a lowering of the club and a squaring of the club. I have heard the quote from Nicklaus from several sources, but does it apply to both components of release of just one????

Release means different things to different people. For Nicklaus the release wasn't complete until after the gall was struck, both atms were straight and the club head was as far from body center as it would e er get. I don't know if that relates at all to the two component analysis.

I think from what I remember of what Jack was talking about was more about the thought/feel of releasing from the top, not what actually happens.

Jack considered the release to be the straightening of the right arm and the movement of the grip back out in front of the chest. In his mind, he could not do these things too early.

This is exactly what jack meant, i think he was rubbishing all the Lag stuff going round at the time

oddly enough....with hackmotion and other measurement tools now days...it's pretty clear to see that what most people think of as a release or casting (lead wrist ulnar deviation) actually should start pretty much from the top of the backswing. It's funny to me how many great players figure these things out back in the day simply through what they felt and by hitting balls.

some can obviously release early, but if Nicklaus said he couldn't, he couldn't, so then the only explanation is that his wrist release muscles (that uncock the wrists) were weak enough compared to his arm pulldown muscles such that his wrist release was always held in check by the pulldown.

Nicklaus said you can’t release too,early if you get to your left side.

He is in fact correct, no one early releases. They just release incorrectly and it’s usually the result of the wrong direction.

I agree with the above that Jack was just talking about a feel. It’s definitely possible to release too early even if you get your “weight forward.” But if a player’s swing contains an early release, that’s because they need it.
