Paperclips?

I'd guess it was something added to Vanilla, and hopefully they can make it go away.

It's actually (almost) "changed back" to where it started.

Originally the PC showed when there was an attachment in the thread OR when the post count reached an "ad post", the ad post having an "attachment" (the ad within the post).

That changed to having the PC on EVERY thread, replies or not.

Now it seems to be not quite back to where it started. Now only the threads with ZERO replies do NOT have the PC. Even 1 reply seems to trigger the PC.; a few threads don't have the PC but most do.

I'm guessing some programmer type, for whatever reason, noticed the PC "option" and figured someone "missed" turning it on - so he did. Of course that doesn't explain the PC options themselves changing,,,,,,,,,, butt who knows ?!?!?!

Yeah, super visually distracting/cluttered and if intended to show attachments, ultimately pointless IMO. But whatever, not going to impact my life and it is clear at this point that the site is either built upon a codebase that is impossible to work on cleanly, or someone has their nephew that took a semester of computer science running the front end.

I have used several golf sites over the years that have had upgrades and I must say this is the pits as far as upgrades go. The others have set up a seperate site and invited several members to use it as a test for some months then when the bugs were out implemented it all in one go. The IT team on this upgrade really need to look a themselves as they have gone from one disaster to another for over twelve months.

I think "one disaster to another" is a bit much.

Upgrades and total changeovers are different.

But yes, often large sites have a group of users (or at least internal personnel, "Acceptance Test" the new site on another platform/url before releasing it on the regular site.

Management here made it clear that they were very close to maxing out the old site whereby it was in danger of just crashing so the changeover was done very quickly so bugs were inevitable.

That said, the length of time since the changeover is a year now and there are still 2 outstanding issues I can think of - search and BST feedback. I have no idea where they stand right now. "Paperclips" ? Have no idea who or why they were implemented but seriously, who cares ? Don't even notice 'em anymore.

Agree with you, however the site did not suddenly become on overload, the build up would have been happening for along time so there should have been plenty of indicators it needed an upgrade. Putting these things off only causes major problems at a future date which now we have all experienced, from what I have been reading it still is not totally acceptable across all forms of software used on the site, only interacted with someone yesterday who has now dropped out because his software does not perform when on the site, it is perfectly OK under all other operating conditions. I am no longer having any major problems on my IPad, but unfortunately that is not the case for many members.

Paper clips are neither here nor there as far as I am concerned, just used this thread to comment as it was convenient

I wasn't even complaining about them, just wondered what they were. Darn it now I demand to know what they were now that question is apparently irrelevant!

LOL, I didn't even notice they were gone - just noticed someone posted in this thread this morning and wondered what paperclip insight might get posted.

And don't be giving me any snarky answers about my weird preferences because this bears no relation to any of them whatsoever --- just noticed two really odd new ad banners and I can assure the world I've never Googled "does Bill Murray shave his balls".
