Toulon Putters: Sole weight or No sole weight?

I was wondering how many of you have changed the sole weights on your Toulon putters? How many of you feel that is an important feature and change head weight frequently? Or not at all?

I have always liked a heavy head weight and have a changed the weights to get that perfect feel. But I wonder if I am the just being a golf nerd. ?

So the question is:

Is head weight adjustment on a putter an important feature for you? Yes or No?

I am sure there is some discussion to go along with that question.

Not just Toulon's but to me the ability to change to a heavy head is huge. Anything below 360g feels too light. If I can't do it with sole weights, then I do it with an absurd amount of lead tape.

I only buy putters with adjustable sole weights. I like a heavier than stock head weight, and also play my putters shorter than 35”, so beefing up the head weight is necessary.

I also like to tinker, and adjust up or down a few grams quite often with all my clubs, including the putter.

Truth be told, I have putter weights for putters I haven’t even owned yet. I buy the weights cheap from China for the day I inevitably buy the putter.

I always thought I wanted a heavier head weight. Got the weight kit for my toulon, and realized my stroke was better with the lightest weight. But now I know!

I prefer an adjustable putter just because I rarely play the same course back to back so I'm always playing different greens and speeds. With the adjustable putter I can just swap weight on the practice green and I'm good to go vs bringing 2 putters.

With that said I don't scoff at fixed weight putters because there just isn't a lot of adjustable weight putters and even fewer being a lefty so I may or may not plan to have 2 similar looking heads in different weight for when needed and in some cases it's cheaper than buying 1 in an adjustable weight for certain brands.

I prefer not to have adjustable weights. My putter is always 345 grams in headweight. If I need to add some weight with a shaft tip weight or some lead tape on the sole that's ok with me. I prefer not to have large holes drilled out of the heel and toe of my putters.

I prefer a clean sole without any adjustable weights, too. Speaking of Toulon: Whatever happened to the Santa Monica model? I remember there was some talk about them being released in a similar fashion to the cameron gallery.

One of the interesting features of the Santa Monica prototypes that I’ve seen, is the lack of adjustability with a sole weight.

This picture is you can tell it’s been around for 3 1/2 years. But this is what kind of started, I think, the prototype Santa Monica model. The other feature that this particular model has is more of a fly mill to the face versus the Deep Diamond milling.

I for one feel that the deep Diamond milling gives me the sound and most importantly the feel that I associate with a Toulon Design putters.

 

This is a putter that was released in Japan a few years. San Proto, I saw a black finish on either Instagram or Twitter. But the milling makes this putter feel firmer a deep diamond mill face, to me. Love quite a bit about this putter though, tri-sole and all.

Over this last winter I was told by someone very high on the food chain at Odyssey that the Santa Monica will not be coming to retail.

The head weight of the putter is vitally important to me. If I can get the right fit without changing weight all the better. If I love a putter but it needs to be a bit heavier I would much prefer the ability to change weights rather than slobbering on lead tape.

I’m indifferent about adjustable weights.

I prefer slightly lighter putter, which allows me swing through better. If I feel like adding a bit weight, lead tape will do the trick.

It seems to vary a bit with different putters. I had a Rochester with the 20g plate. I go more by feel than specific weight.

Do you like your head weight to be around 340 to 360?

340g, 34 inch. I can go up to 350g, but nothing heavier.

Another quick question for you guys. Do you add weight to the head, changeable or lead tape, to compensate for a heavier grip? Similar to swing weight?

This is 365g with stainless plate.....the absolute best feeling putter I've ever used in 30yrs of golf !

Was interested in maybe acquiring the tungsten plate but no need......

Sometimes both tape and weight change. When I had the Rochester I tried the 20g and found it to be a bit heavy some days. So I used the 7g but put a couple strips of lead tape UNDER the sole plate.

I have a 2022 Las Vegas, and it feels noticeably light to me. I'm assuming stock weight is 5g for a 34" putter. But absolutely no way I'm paying $50 to purchase two 10g weights, absolute rip off.  

 

So, I've tacked 2x2g rubber tungsten pads into the little cutouts in the fangs and that gave me the weight I wanted (I may split another and add 2g more).
