Day after Farmers Insurance Open Torrey Pines shotgun

So Double or Triple and I are getting to play Torrey Pines North today thanks to DoT volunteering last year. Thanks buddy!

 

So it's 5:30 over here on the west coast and I just pulled up to Torrey Pines, tents are still in the parking lot and all the signs up for player parking. You almost feel like they mean you! Anyway, we'll try to chronical our adventure over the next couple hours and let you guys know how the course is compared to its everyday conditions. Reception can be spotty on the North but we will try to post pictures as well.

I'm having trouble uploading my pics so I'll try again later tonight. Round was frustrating but great time. Rough was nasty near the greens and quite amazing how the ball would find a way to sit down quickly. Spent a lot of time looking for a wayward drive in the rough. Overall course was in great shape. Of course I played like poop and shot 99.

Alright, finally on my break at work so I can post the rest of the pics I have.

 

One of our friends tee shot on 13. It was playing long!

DoT got this good one of my new Speeder loading on #2 tee box. #LoftUp+

 

Left myself about a 35 yard pitch shot into the green (yes, it was from the rough, haha)

 

Finishing up the festivities with a Sculpin at The Lodge before heading off to work!

 

Overall this was an awesome experience and the course definitely played much harder than the rest of the year. The most noticeable difference was around the greens. While the rough at Torrey can be brutal year round, having it extra hairy around the greens made for some terrible lies with not much green to work with. That coupled with extra firm greens led to an almost automatic bogey or double bogey if you didn't hit the green with your approach shot.

As far as the speed they didn't seem to be excessively fast, but they were very firm and it made it much harder to get long irons to hold on approach shots or chips where you're a little short-sided.

No problem! And the North is definitely still an amazing course even though it doesn't get the public glory that South gets.

The rough wasn't really the problem in that it was consistent around the whole course. Around the greens, I've never seen the rough that full as well as that long in a long time. Also the bunkers were just way too soft for me. I must have had a fried eye shot 3 out of the 4 times I was in the bunkers. Definitely made approach shots tricky.

As for the fairways and greens, they were in amazing condition. Every lie in the fairway offered the chance to go at the green from a perfect lie, with the exception of any divots taken by the pros which were definitely not too deep. The greens were slowed a bit, still faster than normal, especially if you were on the wrong side of the hole. I can say with certainy that the greens did firm up as the sun came out and the moisture/dew evaporated. As we finished the afternoon shotgun was getting ready to head out to their starting holes so I'm betting the afternoon group had faster greens.

That's why bunkers are also called hazards...they are meant to play tough...LOL.....yes I too hate soft sand.

Obviously, the PM wave skipped out on a dew you experienced.

Every time I see pics of the north, I want to take a mower and add about 20 yards of fairway width.

And chop down that tree behind the green on #1.

Will be interesting to see what Mickelson comes up with.
