Think the latest projection is way too close to Houston for comfort.........little south of it was last I heard. Yea Cat. 4/5's are no joke, get the hell outta dodge. Stay safe and our prayers are with you and all in the area.

Guys, thanks for your concern.

 

Looks like I can't get out of town. Traffic is grid locked, little or no gas to purcahase, and people running out of gas sitting in traffic. Airports are even worse and since you must take the same freeways to our airports you may not reach the airports. Traffic controllers can't get to work so flights are delayed by many hours. Any flights after early friday morning will be cancelled to get the planes out of the area prior to Rita's arrival. Almost all busineses are shut down - even the fast food places and convenience stores. Our local leaders have done a great job, but with millions of people in the area, they can only move them out of tha area so fast. No hotels available anywhere in the eastern half of Texas.

 

We'll try again at midnight and see if the traffic runs smoother. If not, we'll hunker down and ride it out.

 

I 10 is now one way from Houston To San Antonio, I 45 one way from Houston to Dallas and HW 290 is one way from Houston to Austin. Greatest one way shift in the interstate history.

 

Rita is starting to move toward the east of Houston, but it is still too early to predict landfall.

 

 

While I would hate to see Louisiana take a second hit, the damage and loss of life would be much smaller to our neighbor on the east.

 

If all that isn't bad enough we have record high temps - 100 degrees!

I have family in the Houston area, and I am glad that we are learning from the mistakes that were made in the Katarina mess, and all we can do is pray that the damage after the hurricane hits isn't anywhere near as catastrophic as what hit New Orleans.

My wife went to Houston yesterday to help her mother pack some irreplaceable family items, secure her house and bring her to our home in Austin. They left Houston this morning at 6:45 AM and arrive in Austin at 9:15 PM. Normally Austin to Houston is a 2.5 - 3 hour drive not a 15 hour marathon at a leisurely 10-15 mph. Glad they are out of there!

 

We will keep everyone on the road and those unable to leave in our prayers.

We just had three hurricanes heading our way until two days ago...thank goodness two turned away and the other changed to "just" a tropical storm.
