I had a robinson sst but i always wanted an Elf for the lightweight and compact size. I may have also wanted the Elf because I saw an 8th grader do a backflip on it off a tabletop jump. It was siiiiiiick

Man RAD was such a cool movie. I had too many bikes to remember as I always seemed to break them or bend them somehow. I do remember one was a Raleigh chrome and then I also had a pea green Diamondback.

I started out with a Dyno Compe in 87, then had a Redline 600c. On the same day as Columbine happened I bought my S&M Holmes, never forget that day for those 2 reasons. I had a Robinson cruiser for a few years and dabbled in racing for a summer, before the golf bug really got me! Last year I bought a SE Big Ripper, it's a 29 inch version of the PK Ripper. I can't do multi speed bikes! That's all I used to do back in the day. Good memories.

Diamondback Viper in all blue. Tires, rims, cables, pads, mushroom grips, pedals, front and rear pegs, crank, the works.

The night my sister was born, my brother proceeded to ride it into the back of a parked truck. Dented the handlebars. And his brain. What a tool.

I saved up for two summers to buy that thing. Then my parents made me give it to my brother (the dented one). He promptly left it out in the rain, wrecked the rims, sold the pegs and genuinely killed it. I had babied that thing.

I lived down the street from a set of triplets that ran Kuwaharas in Yellow, Red and Blue. It seems dorky now, but it was super cool back in the day.

Yeah. I raced from 75-82 and from 86-93, I know, raced and practiced with almost all the real racers in that movie. I only knew a few of the freestyle guys.

Interesting facts. When they all first saw that starting hill, EACH and every one of them said no-way. They had to re-do the transition at the bottom because they compressed too much and lost control. After that was done, they loved it and that's all they wanted to do. They all could not make that vert step-up up -where you see "Hollywood" bail- they were so damn tired and going to slow, but as the week progressed, they got used to it. There was a national race in San Bernardino about a week after the filming. The two Robinson riders -Travis Chipres and Richard Fleming- left the team. The Powerlite rider is Danny Milwee who had just got on with them after getting cut from HARO.

Mike "Hollywood" Miranda became a PGA Teaching Pro for a spell under his fathers surname. Mike is now racing roadbikes.

I still have my 1984 Diamondback Harry Leary Turbo. This is just the frame/forks. I have the rest of the bike in a box somewhere. I think I have the complete bike. Except for the spokes for the rims. Rest of the bike is OG. Anyone else here ride BMX in the early 80's?

Brings back memories. Back when diamondbacks weren't sold at box stores.

Saved my paper route money and put together my black on chrome Hutch. Frame, forks, bars, cranks, hubs, and those bad-a$$ beartrap pedals. Equipped with Proneck, Bullseye, Araya, Uniseat....oh geez what else did I put on that thing. Anyways, I was totally a tinker'er with my bike, I just now moved on to tinkering with golf.
Thanks for the memories!

Still have bear trap scars on my shins and calves, man I loved BMX! Elf and Redline were the shizz, GT was always the trick bike/flatland/stunt ride to have. Had to have VANS shoes and Vision Street Wear to ride or skate.

It's still amazing to me that we didn't break more bones doing the stupid stuff we used to do. Tried jumping a pogo ball off a curb, power bounced my back tire off of it and almost bled out from the gash my pegs opened up on my shin. Jumped a storm drain up and over a 10 ft tree lawn about 7 ft high landed to flat (my lower backs still hurts). How did we ride ALL DAY and not get tired? I never got off my bike...

I rode barefoot one day and tried some ridiculous slide into my driveway and ended up laying my bike on its side, sliding with my inner foot acting as the brake. Almost 20 years later and I still have two almost perfectly circular shaped scars on my foot.

I have twin circular scarred indentions on my shins below my knees, one from an almost-made-it jump and another from a too close call with a boat trailer hitch. That was 25 yrs ago and I still cringe recalling those events in my mind.

Who still goes out and bunny hops their kids bikes today? Yeah, me too. Can't ride a wheelie like I used to but I can still tote the front wheel on occasion...

Haha!

You could spend all day going a few miles one way, hitting all kinds of jumps and driving around in circles, up and down hills, get some candy and go all the way to the next town. Then, you go straight all the way home as the sun is coming down, coasting, cooling off. Drink like a gallon of Five Alive and have dinner.

I have scars between the knuckles (they used to be on them) on my right hand as my back brake cable broke and I went over the handlebars as the front brake worked really well. (I used to say you shoulda seen the other guy.)

I was a mid 90s kid...born in 82. I remember the xmas all the kids in the neighborhood got our bikes. Mine was a GT Vertigo, chrome. I would get home from school at 3, get on that and ride around til dark, never got tired. I would need to be airlifted after 10 minutes on one of those things now. Those were the good ol days. Did something to my knee on the bike once. Jumping over random stuff on a vacant lot and landed funny. Couldnt walk good for a couple weeks and it still sneaks up and gives me pain to this day 15 years later.

The bike I had that was the best was an older diamondback that had a GT crank along with those black GT 6 spoke mags that had white lettering. I used to ride that about 11 miles one way to see a girl I was dating at the time and it took around an hour to do. Growing up my family did not have a lot of money so when I got old enough I bought a GT performer brand new for around 350 in 1998. I sold it to a friend in 2000 to move out of town and he kinda misteated it. Left it out in the rain, got rid of the pegs and so on. Around 2003 I bought it back and restored it. Now it sits in my basement and gets ridden maybe a couple times a year. I still get the looks today as I did back then. We also had a 50 cent show we used to go to back in the early 90's and we would would have to double up. Awesome time and thanks for the thread.
