Spikeless golf shoes and their gripping ability?

I only wear spikeless shoes now. Have had no issues with slippage. I think in the 3 years I have worn them exclusively, I have slipped during a swing maybe twice. Every time was on a sidehill, in wet weather and was in a spot where I likely would have slid with any type of non steel spike on.

Traction during your swing, on completely flat ground, is more about the balance in your swing than the spikes you are wearing. I play 40 or so rounds a year in all weather and have no issues whatsoever.

I've never worn spikeless but have a friend that has two pair of Footjoy spikeless and likes them. Every once in a while I'll see him slip and never recall seeing him do that when he wore spiked shoes.

This is my experience with spikeless. They are great in dry conditions, obviously, and perhaps even better than 'spiked' shoes, maybe because they have traction across the whole sole rather than in 6 or 7 places. They are definitely more comfortable because of the uniform soles. And perhaps they perform better when subjected to the rolling, twisting action during a golf swing.

However, in wet conditions, I have slipped whilst wearing them. I had a pair of Adidas pure motion shoes and slipped a couple of times but their 'spikes' were pretty low profile. The Ecco Biom Hybrids I'm wearing now I haven't slipped in, perhaps because the 'spikes' protrude more.

I think you should wear spikeless all the time, except keep a pair of spiked ready for wet days.

Oh, and another thing in their favour is that spikeless don't clog up with loose grass cuttings like spiked ones. I find this can create a poor footing and leads to potential bad shots.

I did not like the spikeless Nikes I had a couple years ago. Not nearly as much grip as I'm used to, plus once they wear down, the shoe is pretty much trash and you have to buy a whole new pair. I just put fresh spikes in my TW13s today.

I slip in the spikeless shoes except my biom zeros. I slip in my hybrid Bioms. I won't wear them to play in anymore. I bought them to wear to work and be able to play towards the end of the day. Not happening.

I have a few pair of spikeless shoes. For the most part I wear them to work in, but I will occasionally wear them to the range. I've never had a problem slipping in them even when the grass was wet (although I did about break my neck on the ultra slick men's room floor at Outback Steakhouse).

But when I know I'm going to the course specifically to play, I always wear spiked shoes. It's a mental thing I guess.

I've played primarily spikeless the past 3 years and have had no issues. I played this past weekend in rain and had no problem at all. The only issue with spikeless IMO is that the rubber nubs for grip can wear down over time, and while spikes can be replaced, the same cannot be done on spikeless shoes. Otherwise I think it's a non issue.

I think it really depends on your swing. If you have a smooth transition then you can play in sandals and not spin out. If you have an abrupt transition than I don't think spikeless shoes would be the best option, especially on wet days.

It's funny, a couple of years ago we did a trip to England with Ashworth. The guys on the TaylorMade truck said a lot of pros preferred the spikeless shoes for rainy days since they have gripping power along the entire length of the shoe, rather than just a 6-8 points.

Personally, I do think a spiked shoe with an aggressive surrounding tread (i.e. Tour 360 Ltd) give a better grip than a spikeless shoe (I have Cardiffs, ECCOS and Trues). However, I think either gives more than enough grip for virtually any playing condition.

i have had two scopes on my left knee so I have never gone the spikeless route. I have always gone with the most spike traction I can get.
You might want to check with your orthopedist - your knee may hold up better if you have shoes that will break free when you put too much twisting force into them rather than pinning your foot to the ground and transferring all the torque into your knee.

I've had no knee scopes but I do have some issues with my miniscus on my left knee... What funny is I basically can't wear spiked shoes now or my knee will get very sore/stiff by the end of the round. Spikeless shoes however, no issue unless I play 36. I walk 85% of my rounds.

The biggest downfall is not being able to replace the spikes once they wear down. But I am of the belief that shoes wear out, expeically shoes you are walking 5-7 miles in, and people keep them way too long. A shoe isn't worn out when it has a hole in it, a shoe is worn out when the padding/support is broken down. Regularly changing out shoes is critical to foot and leg health (at least in my opinion).

I agree with this and some spikeless shoes have better traction than others. For instance my Puma Fass Lite shoes do not have near as good as traction as the New Balance Minimus. I haven't slipped while swinging but have slipped while hoofing it up a steep will in my Puma Faas Lite. TRUE's tread pattern, at least on the pairs I had, were realy just OK. They don't have a very agressive tread pattern and the grippies aren't very deep. Again, same thing in those. I'm a little more careful while walking up and wet hills but haven't slipped in my swing.

I really can't say enough good things about the New Balance Minius shoes. They have a very agreesive spikeless tread pattern. They actually have what looked like normal soft spikes except they aren't removeable and are a softer rubber instead of plastic/harder rubber. Then they also have the typical spikeless shoe pattern in between those areas. The shoe is almost the best of both worlds. I walk up and down steep hills with no worry or care just as I would in spiked shoes. The best way to think of the New Balance Minimus golf shoe is that it's where the world of Trail Running shoes and golf shoes meet.

I like the comfort of the hybrid shoe. But I have happy feet in my golf swing. Lol. So I just gotta go with what works. Of thing is that my ecco zeros are the exception. I don't slip in them. But they aren't as comfy ...

Spikeless the last three years for me, and I won't go back. In that time, I've only slipped once, and that was on bare wet clay soil, while walking onto a green. Can't imagine the kind of happy feet required to slip in these during a normal swing.

I slip in spikeless in a few conditions. When it's damp, it's more likely. In the sand, you CAN slip a bit. But you can also slip in spikes, so...

Also, in longer grass, you can slip if you're not careful. If you're taking huge hacks out of the rough I don't think they're really going to perform too well. I've never slipped in a moderately mowed fairway, and when they're nice and short and it's dry, you'll never slip.

Hoping someone can help me with this...

I have a super high waist and long legs and the spiked shoes I have now only make me taller - which is like to avoid for posture reasons etc.

Are there spineless shoes that have less of a heightening effect?
Many of them are fairly low profile.

No problems with my True's so far, even playing on damp and wet conditions there was no slippage over the past 2 and a half years.

I can agree with the "whole foot traction" advantage of spikeless shoes theory vs "6 to 8 areas of traction" of the traditional spiked shoes. I seem to have to knock and brush off the wet grass and vegetation a lot less with the spikeless than I have with the spiked shoes.

I have several pairs of the Adidas Puremotion. Been completely spikeless for almost two years now, and never had any slippage problems. And we get some wet conditions here in Oregon...

They even held up nicely in a couple monsoons at Bandon, and it doesn't get any more wet than that.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

I wear both spiked and spikeless, and the only time spiked had an advantage was on extreme slopes, where you struggle to maintain balance while swinging. Or even just hiking up and down the hill looking for a ball or whatever. I feel more secure w/ spikes in those situations.

A plug for Dryjoy spikeless, seem to have better traction than other models of spikeless.
