4-Man Scramble... 44... What? How?

Played in a 4-man scramble today, on a very challenging course. Add gusting winds to that and we weren't sure that any groups would break 60.

 

But the winning group turned in a 44? What? How is this even possible? I know a scramble isn't always the strictest rules, but seriously? Why would the tournament organizers even allow them to turn in such a score?

Hmmm...assuming par 72, 10 eagles implies each par 5 was a 3 and there was a combination of several holes in one and/or second shot holed on par 4s.

Was that course made up of either all drivable par 4's or reachable in 2 par 5 's .... for a 44 that would be a hell of a lot of eagles on the card .....? unless they had a pencil with a eraser on one end ..

I will tell you now.... I play a Scramble and a team, on a tough course, in the wind, turns in a 44....

I would literally drive around them in a Golf Cart.... Mad Max style.... Waving my putter..... On fire....

So what gimmicks were they using in the scramble. The only way I could see a score that low would be if they bought a spoil of string.

You could buy mulligans for $5 each, but still...

Course was 6601 yards. 72.3 and slope [b]132[/b]. I consider that fairly challenging.

The fact that the score was allowed is atrocious. Thats a record and Guiness should be called. Oh, and so should their bluff. Also, if there were skins involved I'd be wicked not happy

Even with 100 mulligans, the probability is very low you would eagle every [s]hole[/s]....par 4.... Seriously, I would have stood up and called them out for an emergency nine so they could show me the skill that got a 44.

Now who is exaggerating? You don't need an eagle on every hole,[b] [i]just[/i][/b] 10 eagles and 8 birdies.

I would hope the pro asked them if they knew the rules, as maybe they were confused and this was somehow a net score and not a gross score.

Most we play in give 10% of of the team total. Even at net 44 is an outrageous number.

Ok. So if your 4 man team has a total of 40 your team gets 4 shots?

I've always been curious about how they do it.

It's very outrageous because the more shots they get the more outrageous the score is. If in fact it was net. Either way, this guy would not have gone quietly.

I would have called those guys out faster than they could say "forty-four". I can't believe the guy scoring the tournament didn't laugh out loud when he was handed the card.

So that's two shots a hole +8.... assuming no 1s on the card...that's a birdie on every par 3, and either driving the green or holing out on every par 4. At 6,600 yards, there are probably some driveable par 4s but that's still a lot of holeouts. Eagles on every par 5 in a scramble with mulligans is doable. That's 2*14 + 3*4....that gets you to 40.

Sounds like they left a few shots out there.

I've gone to 50 in a scramble....-22. Fairly easy course, 3 mulligans per person (didn't use 2), and 2 feet of 'string'. Lowest 'clean' score is 51.

I'm taking this too far, but from PGA tour data you can estimate, roughly, that hole outs happen .17% of the time from the fairway.

The odds of that happening twice in a row, which it would have almost have had to here, are roughly .0002802% of the time, or roughly 2.8 times out of every million shots hit. For it to happen 3 times in a row you are looking at 4.7x out of every one Billion shots hit. Assuming you are tour quality.

In laymen's terms - they screwed everyone.

Correct. So if they got say 10 strokes, they would have a total team handicap of 100. And most of our tournaments have an indiviuall max of 25. So four 25 caps would have shot 18 under gross to get that net 44.

I'm like the others have said, how did anyone even accept that card without thinking it was a joke.
