Regular vs. Stiff Shaft

jadad

Recommended Posts

I wanted to get input on a shaft recommendation. I am thinking of a new driver. I don't like doing the Golf Galaxy thing of trying out the drivers there and buying online (or trying there and buying at full price there). I have been using stiff shaft drivers the past few years, but I am starting to wonder if it is costing me distance. I currently use the Cleveland Classic 290 stock stiff shaft and a good drive is 260, but usually in the 225 range. I hit a 7 iron 160 or so, but that is with TM Burner 2.0, so I know that is amped up.

I am looking at either the TM slider mini or the Nike Covert 2.0.

Any input would be appreciated.

The stiffness of the shaft does not affect distance. Please check this video and digest what Crossfield is trying to convey.

If good drives are 260, but average is 220...it's your quality of impact that is effecting that.

My suggestion first off would be to buy some Dr. Shol's foot spray and coat the face(it will wipe off), and check consistency of impact locations on the face. First step is to get consistent impacts.

This is where so many people go wrong, is trying to go with a complicated fix instead of the most important.

Highly probable that shaft length could be too long.

it's very hard to recommend shaft flex to you for the obvious reason of not knowing your swing.

but also, there really doenst seem to be any uniform standard as to what a r flex is and what an s flex is. some r flex shafts play tighter than some s flex shafts for example..it really depends on the particular shafts.

also many companies intentionally put a softer playing shaft in their clubs and label them as 'stiff' to satisfy the golfers ego

The Cleveland 290 is probably near a 46" shaft length.
Invest in a 44" driver and it will help your swing, quality of ball contact, accuracy, distance consistency etc....

Sounds like you believe in the Slider Mini with the shorter shaft. I do okay with my 3 wood off the tee, so I think you are on to something. I am only 5'8", so I think I agree.

Yes, the Slider Mini at 43.5" finished length is a smart design. One (not well known) benefit you will get is that swinging the other clubs within the bag , such as fairway metals, hybrids, irons etc... becomes a much easier transition when the driver is 43.5". Most people don't realize that a 45" (or longer) driver shaft makes the transition to the bag's other clubs especially challenging.. It's about swing harmony throughout the bag.

I watched the video; very interesting, and thanks for posting it. And I'll agree 100% that the head, the loft, and the setting matter much more than shaft flex.

But there are SOME differences in distance according to the shaft; not large, but some. I did a G30 fitting in late Sept., and hit the exact same head with the same setting with an S, R, and senior flex. The R shaft gave me the best overall results; the average spin rate was almost identical to the S, but both the carry and overall distances were 5 yds. longer with the R; I assume this was due to a 1.5* increase in the launch angle with no additional spin.

With the senior flex, the launch was essentially the same as the R, but the spin rate went up 300 rpms, and the carry and overall distances were worse than either the S or the R shafts. While my swing isn't nearly as consistent as the pro in the video, I'm a decent player who was working with a great fitter on a Trackman setup. I can't explain the physics of it, but it's on my Trackman printout and is an average based on a LOT of swings with each setup. I won't even discount the possibility that because of the "feel" of the shaft, I was doing something different in the swing, like a better release, with the R than with the other two. Still, that would be the shaft changing distance, one way or the other.

I know that 5 yds. +/- don't matter to many golfers, but it does to me. I've failed to carry a LOT of hazards by 5 yds. (or less!), and hit a lot of bunkers for the lack of 5 more yds., and been blocked on a lot of doglegs by 5 yds. or less.

And to the OP: remember that all of what I have written is based on a 90 minute Trackman fitting with one of Ping's best guys. Those are MY results; your's have to be determined the same way!
