For the record, yes, I would be just as happy doing that.

[it's QUITE possible I said something like, "if you break 72, wouldn't you rather it be on a course with a 72 rating?" But, what you wrote doesn't sound right at all.

Wasnt you. The implied question was would you be as happy shooting an under par round if it was a Par 70 and not Par 72.

Ah.

Personally, I think shooting under par on a 70 is tougher than under par on a 72. When you get to a certain skill level in golf, par 5's are definitely easier to birdie than par 3's.

Similarly, shooting 11 under on a par 70 is tougher than 11 under on a par 72 for a pro, but that doesn't mean it's easier than 13 under on a par 72.

Agreed. Structurally one of the two MV Par 5s is not reachable, it bends right and then left. Not an option:

https://course.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/course/course/mountvernoncc/overview.htm#9

Even worse, the front third of the green is so severely sloped from back to front its only missing a clowns mouth.

The other Par 5 I've gone for but have never come close, its narrow and @ 540 from the back.

Hard to see the obstructions keeping you from getting to that hole in 2 on the aerial shot.

Is it that tree by the cart path ~70 yards from the green?

Yeah its hard to see. A good drive will put you over the bunker on the right side of the fairway.

From the start of the fairway to where it bends left is all uphill.

Left side is all big oak trees - although thankfully they cut a bunch down.

Right side off the tee is a road/OB if you're thinking about pushing it farther right off the tee to get a better look.

Least favorite hole on the course.

Absolutely City. Even I can make birdies on occasion on a par 5 :).

Duval's 59 at a par 72 course was 13 under. Playing from 6,950 yards.

JT's 59 at a par 70 course was 11 under. Playing from 7,050 yards.

The PGA plays lower par courses now because they are playing par 5s as par 4s. That doesn't make it any easier. It just makes it harder to shoot further below par because you don't have the extra 5s.

At my age, I just like to see things rather simplistically. The kid (and I do mean kid) shot a great round. Over the history of the PGA, playing courses of varying pars and set ups, the list of those breaking 60 is rather short. So my old man's simplistic response is great round kid, way to go.

Hey, I know how good it feels to break 60, but then I go to the back nine.

11 under is a great round, regardless of par and with any reasonable number for length.

If a pro shot 11 under on a 6200 yard course, I'd be impressed. Still pretty tough to make a 3 on a hole playing 350 yards. Still tough to make a 2 from 150 yards.

I get where you're going, but shouldn't the comparison be between par 5s and par 4s? I would think most courses at 70 replace 2 5s with 2 4s (as Mt Vernon does). But your point remains. I just wanted to be argumentative.

Eagle...

Bang-me got out today...

I ended wining our unofficial worst golfer of the day by 1 stroke. :)

Anyone that has played with me...name a time where I played a cut with irons..Easy... I DONT!

Well #knuckles has me hitting everything right (kinda of figure it would happen) different way different. Contact was a lot better but direction worst.

Grip crept in my head even on my chips/pitches, so not the best day.

Shots of the day by me...

Anger 3 wood on a par 5... 3rd shot from a drop (lost/lateral), over trees to about 8 feet... par

My demonstration of how to hit a punch 3 wood to bang@$$ under a tree... pin high off the green ;)

Worst shot(s)

Hit 4 trees on a par 5... flashback of needwood but I didn't get hit.

Out of season golf is fun... you can work on things, hit some great shots, hit some turrribllleee shots and none of it matters...

What about courses that change par for events. Congo, Torry, Pebble all are 72's. But they play to 71 for US Opens. Heck, Chambers was going to change from 70 to 71 each day by swapping tees on #18...

"Par" is marketing. And it makes following the action easier on TV.

Joe shot 280.

Fred shot 282.

Joe wins. Who cares if he was 8 under or 4 under. 280 < 282. I'll tell ya who cares. . .apparently the USGA.

i think it'd be cool if they taped two guys' entire round, and then started showing the shots in sequence.

Golfer A tees off 1

Golfer B tees off 1

Golfer A hits approach on 1

Golfer B hits approach on 1

Golfer A makes putt on 1

Golfer B misses putt on 1

Golfer A tees off on 2

Golfer B misses putt on 1

Golfer A hits approach on 2

Golfer B makes putt on 1

Golfer A misses putt on 2

Golfer B tees off on 1.

They wouldn't play like that, obviously, but it could be edited to show like that. It'd be like a race. Thinking of how many actual "shots" someone is in front of someone else would be cool. Might only be one "shot" back of someone, but that one "shot" is a 265 3w into a par 5 with water near the green.

this is exactly how i approach a hole if i am giving (or getting) shots during a match. smaller scale obvi, as each hole is its own contest. but #saambattum idea.

Eagle apparently needs commits early, but pre-dating Trolls Riding Unicorns is going to be Vernal Equinoxious. I'll have details when we're closer.

Plan for Vernal Equinoxious is Waverly, but that's subject to change.

Tex, I noticed there is an abandoned driving range just down the road from you. I say the thread (read Kent with meager contributions from the rest of us) purchases it so we can have a hella cool hangout spot all to ourselves.

I visited that place a couple times At one time, they had accounts with Titleist/Callaway. Many years ago.. just not a great neighborhood.

OMG yes. I would retire right now if I could just hang out at a driving range all day with you ingrates. That's basically what we're doing anyway.
