MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

Last time I played my FIL's member-guest, I had a guy ask me if I had ever played Caves. He was a 50 some year old hedge fund guy. When I told him where I was from, that was the only connection he could draw to the area.

Him: "I played a place down there once called Caves Valley. Have you ever played there?"

GTM: Give me Burning Tree and MacKezie.

Caves and Congo would be a close second and third. Loved the look of Caves during the LPGA event last year and would like to play Congo just to recognize the holes when they are on tv.

Crickets in here today.

Golf Talk Monday : If you could play one round at any private club in DC, MD, or VA - which one do you choose?

EDIT: I didn't really think before posting, but I guess none of the private clubs are actually in DC.

Kinloch for sure.

Dominion Club isn't a very exciting layout and the conditions are okay. Practice facilities aren't great. The clubhouse is very nice though.

Federal Club is much nicer than Domionion, IMO. But from what I hear and the pictures I've seen Kinloch is hands down the nicest club in Richmond, if not VA. Apparently the membership fees reflect that.

I would go with Caves Valley as well. It looks immaculate.

My girlfriend worked as executive assistant to her CEO while she was finishing up her Masters degree last year. She was supposed to clear the calendar if anyone ever called to play "some caves place" as she put it haha... I just shook my head.

I played Caves Valley.

Sheer dumb luck. My father won a drawing at a charity golf outing.

I was maybe a year out of college- if you think my game sucks now you should have seen it then. I look like Rory McIlroy now compared to that guy. My brother was still playing but he was in college, so he drives up to meet us at Caves.

So to set the scene for you: Eastern Shore hicks spend night in a 2500 sq ft guest cottage - 4 bedrooms, kitchen , huge living area, pool table, etc. All on the tab of the member who put up the prize.

First tee: Saturday 8am. 2nd group off. In the first group- playing for the Club Championship match play against another member: Maury Povich. Povich won. Look out Connnie Chung, the champ's coming home!

So apparently its a standard thing that the Head Pro come out and welcome the first foursome off and warn us about pace of play. We were expected in 4 hrs 20 min, if we fell behind the caddies would simply move us to where we should be. The caddy picks up my brother's bag, and almost throws his shoulder out.

You know how in college you didn't normally have a whole lot of money, and you'd pick up any stray ball you'd find, no matter the condition? Well, that's what my brother had done. So here's the head pro and my brother's caddy emptying his beat up golf bag of well over 50 crap golf balls into a trash bag on the first tee. The member was playing teeing off behind us with other members, you could see he was mortified.

Really a cool layout and great condition. When we were there at night and you're looking out over rolling hills you just can't believe your close to Baltimore. I was so scared playing the place I didn't really appreciate it at the time.

I honestly don't know much about private courses unless they've hosted a big tournament. For that reason, I'd say Congressional, because I watched the US Open there.

I looked up Kinloch and it definitely looks like a mighty fine course.

The Dominion may actually be doable next month for me...staying about 2 miles from it with a guy who knows a few members, and hoping to play with an old roommate that was an assistant in the Richmond area for 15 years. Might be able to pull some strings for a low-cost to free round.

But if it was wide open, Kinloch would be the one south of the border.

. . .and THAT'S why Connie Chung still walks bow-legged to this day.

The End.

In an addendum to this, I remember being excited to play irons that I had just gotten a month prior.

Want to know what they were?

Wilson Fatshafts.

Looks like me and Connie both had Fatshafts that day....

First I have played Kinloch twice.

In MD

1st Congo

2nd Caves

3rd BCC East

My boss was a member at Caves so I played it maybe 6 times a year for about 6 years. My opinion is based on more then just the course, but the whole deal.

Kinloch in Va. I think is the best in state

Pikewood in West Virginia maybe the better of them all and on par with Kinloch

I just about creamed myself watching the video on Pikewood's website. What a beautiful piece of land. I have close to zero experience playing private clubs, but the land is what stood out to me most about RTJ. I don't know how you could build a bad golf course on the property.

An almost business partner and the CEO/founder of my first company are both members at Kinloch (huge douchebag). I heard the practice facilities at Kinloch are pretty amazing as well. Isn't there like an enclosed practice/fitting facility with bay doors that open?

I've never played Willow Oaks or CCV down here - they're supposedly pretty nice as well but nowhere near Kinloch. Have you, Ken? I think CCV is actually hosting a Champions Tour event soon.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
