Local "Ryder Cup" Tournament

So myself and one of my friends are the captains for our local Ryder Cup ( We call it the Baldwin Cup). We got with the other captains a couple nights ago and picked teams. Somehow the team that my co-captain and I picked ended up with a team with higher handicaps than our opponents. The total handicap of our team is 167 while the other team is 135. We usually handicap the event to make sure that it is as even as possible. This year it is our turn to pick the format (18 holes the first day and 18 holes the second). So my question is what formats can we play so that we can use our strokes/handicaps to our advantage. Do you guys have a suggestion? I was thinking captains choice (Handicapped) and fourball (Handicapped) the second day. Give me your ideas! Thanks!

Your choice on day one. But the last day has to be singles. No sense having this type of match without some real puckering by everyone involved.

We are either doing fourball or singles the last day. Big question is what to do the first day so we can use our strokes to our advantage!

We do 9 holes Best Ball/9 holes Singles on day 2.

my estimation of biggest advantages for high handicappers

Best ball (4 ball)
Scramble
Singles
Alternate shot

High handicappers also benefit from match play vs stroke play.

We also played a shamble in one of ours, where you play your own ball in from the best drive. Kind of takes the pucker factor out for the higher caps that can't get off the tee.

Four-ball then singles if you want a real "Ryder Cup" feel.

If you want to increase your odds for victory, get your opponents drinking early and keep it going.

If you're playing team events you might want to increase it to 27 holes per day instead of 18. Gives you the chance to add more formats and also 18 goes by pretty fast if you are playing some alternate shot in there.

I like 9/9/9 with different formats each 9.

Best ball will allow you to take the most advantage of strokes, especially if you pair the guys up accordingly.

We are doing a similar event here in Vegas next weekend. Here is how we broke it down

2- 6 man teams, 2 days 54 holes

Day 1, 1st round points game- head to head 2 man teams adding up points (4 points for eagle, 3 for birdie, 2 par, 1 bogey) so if 1 guy pars the other bogies that teams scores a total of 3 for the hole (highest point total wins the match)
Day 1, 2nd round, front nine modified alternate shot. Both player hit drive then whose ever drive they chose the other hits the 2nd shot until the put is holed. back 9 2 man scramble (combined avg handicap used to score the round)

Day 2, head to head singles

handicaps included and 1 point for a win 1/2 for a tie

I never understand these "point matches" when each additional shot costs a point, why not just say double bogey max.

Stableford points have varying point differences between additional shots, so that actually does change the strategy.

Shamble is an excellent idea. Better golfers usually struggle less with the tee ball and can put on in play further down there than the higher handicaps probably can. And if you take the big number out of play with the tee ball, then those strokes probably make a much bigger difference.

Just imagine the 25 capper that can't get off the tee, but you drop him 150 yards out and he gets 2 strokes that hole (that normally would have been wasted with hazard / OB), could be some low scores....

yeah i hear what your saying and i guess the main reason i can come up with is we are playing with our hcps so if you are an 18 hcp (which is our max allowed) and go double bogey max that person will automatically score 1 point on each hole with out trying.
