Better have game to back up your style

Recommended Posts

I love golf clothes, shoes, and nice clubs. I don't see why I should dress like a hobo and swing a walmart club just because I'm learning.

I mostly hear this sentiment on forums, though. At least no one's ever said a thing about it around me in person. Could be because I'm a woman, and that's not obvious online.

I REMEMBER BUNGHOLE IN ONE. I loved that game.

Just because I drive a Lamborghini (I don't but for this exercise, assume) does not mean I'm a total d-bag d-wad. Maybe I like to drive it (I don't) and just because I dress in bold clothing (I don't) does not mean I have the game to back it up. What is Phil's excuse. Get that guy some color, stat! Who cares what you wear as long as you have clothes on the course, even...cargos.

I gotta say, the ONLY thing I can't stand on a golf course is:

SLOW PLAY from hackers.

You can dress like a bum or like Tiger, I don't care.

You can be quiet as a mouse or a club tossing lunatic, I don't care.

You can be a drunk or a priest (or both if you are catholic.... LOL), I don't care.

You can be a slow playing scratch golfer and I don't care....

You can be a fast playing hacker, and I don't care.

You CANNOT be a slow playing hacker.

Any of you guys old enough to know who Payne Stewart was? He did a commercial for one of his sponsors (I forget which one. He had many). The commercial started out with him saying, "If you're going to dress like this, you better be able to back it up." He was right.

Slow playing scratch golfers are the worst. At least hackers have an excuse for being slow.

Slow scratch golfers hit 35% less shots than hackers. From my experience, only 5-10% of scratch golfers are slow, where as it seems about 50% of hackers are slow.

I'm not sure what knowing who Payne Stewart was has to do with this thread. You just said that was in a commercial, where they are trying to sell you stuff. How do you know what he really thought?

If you want to wear plus fours and shoot 120, more power to you.

If you want to dress like a slob and shoot under par, have at it.

If you want to wear nice clothes and shoot any number, good for you.

If you want to beige it out so no one at your club makes fun of you if you wear color (as you have stated in another thread), follow the herd.

Or, wear what you want, no matter the score! Cheers! :-)

Anyone should feel free to wear what they want, as long as it conforms to the rules of their particular course, without consideration for their score or handicap level.

One of my favorite comedic quotes about golf: "If you don't play golf, you've probably at least thought about it. Then, at that very moment, you looked out your window and saw your neighbor carrying his clubs to the car... wearing lime green f****** pants, cause all golfers are color blind."

This topic has come up a few times and I understand the thought process behind both sides. I don't understand the actual prejudice towards those who don't play well, relatively, who dress nice. I would think that after about 13 seconds of actual thought that one would realize that the way you dress has nothing to do with your ability to play. Heck, I shot my best round in cargo shorts and a t-shirt (not my typical attire, but sometimes the chance for golf arises when you're not necessarily prepared to play).

My thought would be more based on how some people might carry themselves without having the game to back it up. The guys who have all the same clubs as the pros, dress like the pros, carry themselves and talk like they are a pro, then have no game. This one I understand, but this is different than judging a book by it's cover.

I guess I'd say you're a bit of a shallow minded idiot if you assume anything about anyone by what they wear.. Unless it's a dude in a dress. You can probably draw some conclusions, but I bet you'd still have a pretty damn hard time figuring out how good he is at golf based off of it..

You mean other golfers won't make fun of me if I wear something like this :

http://us.loudmouthg...-smasher-a.html

Hahaha. This one I don't get. It's clearly there to draw attention, and there's no way that one could assume it'd all be positive. I wouldn't assume anything about you're golf game, but I could probably draw the conclusion that your sense of style is.... different. lol

Reminds me of all the millenial bs "You can't discriminate against me because of the plate in my lip and the neon pink hair, you should still hire me!" haha.

I'm not sure why, but a hat like that does make a statement. It is associated with different people from different walks of life. Some respectful, some not. So when you wear the hat it may be assumed by some that you take on the personalities of the people who wore that hat. With that mumbo-jumbo being said, to me, I like the hat, but h the looks a little rebellious in it. but that is probably just me.

If I had 5 bucks every time someone said "you're lucky you have the game to back up those shoes" I'd be retired

Not sure why nice clothes rattle so many

I don't like the guy that wears the same pair of black shorts/pants all summer that are fading to a copper colour

I'm just confused at the OP. Are you saying that it is ok to dress like Ian Poulter, even if you can't get home on par in 1/18 holes? If so, I couldn't disagree more.

So you're saying that you have an issue with the way another man/woman puts together an outfit? And that they should consider their ability to score well before deciding to dress how they want? Guess we will agree to disagree. For the record, I couldn't care less if someone dresses like Ian Poulter or Rickie Fowler or even wears a t-shirt and ripped jeans. It's not my job to prequalify anyone nor do I believe anyone's score should be related to their style.

Oh, I completely understand what you're trying to infer with your story about Payne. However, I don't see how you can jump to the conclusion that because of one commercial, no one should dress in a manner that draws attention to them unless they have the game to back it up. That hardly seems like that is enough of an argument to make your case. I seriously doubt that Payne would care what anyone would wear while they were playing golf.

As for your concern for the condition of my shoes, I appreciate that thoughtfulness. No need to worry though, as they are all nicely polished and waiting for their next turn in the rotation. :-)

I'm going to go against the grain here, and chip in my 2 cents.

I totally understand why people say it. Do I agree with it? Not at all.

Here's just a few reasons off the top of my head why someone might say something like that:

1. Mental edge. Get in your head, gamesmenship, they want it to bother you and therefor hinder your performance in a match.

2. They may feel you're a girly'mon, and spend more time and money on your clothes than on your game / lessons

3. Sometimes it's in good fun amongst friends and over drinks. Let's face it, guys will say anything to make the rest of the group laugh.

4. They're just plain and simply a-holes ? hah

With that being said, outside of number 3 above, I'm not guilty of any of them and don't care how someone else dresses, in fact I like when others have nice crisp gear on. I love to dress well - and a lot of my friends take shots at me saying that I dress scratch, but play to a 7 (or they say - if you only played as well as you dressed). It's all in fun, I'm fine with it.
