Clubhouse Grille (*** NO LIV DISCUSSIONS ***) (*** NO POLITICS/RELIGION ***)

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, a nice 50 degree day. Walked 14 holes on an empty course, didn't play too badly, one birdie.

Had over an hour chat with the president and manager of the club. We talked about club finances, and the manager stressed that the money situation was critical. Mr. President discoursed about how we needed to sell more equity certificates, and other such nonsense. I tried to stay as neutral as possible. Board meeting tonight, I'm glad he didn't ask me to attend. Nothing will be accomplished.

The manager said she had to cancel a booked wedding for late November. The roof is leaking badly over the bar area, the furnace isn't working properly, and the A/C needs replaced completely. For $375, and liquor sales, (outside catering) the manager said she could not risk a fiasco. The president didn't comment.

I can't understand why no one on the board has attempted to get a loan or line of credit to just keep the club going. When the Marcellus gas royalties come in from pumping, things will be ok. Now, the wells are capped, in anticipation of higher prices in the future.

We'll see.

Funny how head in the sand effects many so called intelligent people, it seems no matter what you said the result would be the same. Not worth making yourself unpopular and uncomfortable to prove you are correct.

Go home cuddle your dog friend and let them stew in their own stupidity. How the heck they think they can attract more investment when the ship is sinking.

Not sounding too positive, Wriggles. Perhaps you should attend the board meeting to survey the lay of the land. You could say you were there to answer any of the financial questions as the bookkeeper.

The gas royalties would certainly be a plus, but you have no idea when they will come online and you can't wait it out without bridge capital by the sounds of it. One wonders why the board hadn't decided to open the club to the public for this season considering the situation. I know there's a backstory that you have shared before, but you'd think at this point the situation would have dictated action.

Good luck with this and keep us posted.

Catching up. Hurricane Michael's visit left us in the dark. Cable, power, phones, data line, all down for many days and nights. Amazing what "can" be cooked on a gas grille. Things beginning to normalize - finally. Would gripe and complain but that'd be a low blow given what so many have been through.

Any hints on how to remove candle wax from the toilet seat? You can fill in the blanks on that one.

No golf lately. Miss it. As I recall we hold the skinny end in the hands and swing the fat part at the ball.

Glad you are back and ok. I was wondering how you did with the storm. Perspective is important in all this for sure. So sad for the many wiped out in the pan handle. The pics and videos are astounding. I don't know how I could deal with that. It makes golf and grille seem so small.

We have four weeks and a bit before DW has her ablation, talking to the doctors we were of the mind one pre op visit to the hospital, but we now have five days to visit for numerous specialised tests. One of them take 2 hours prep, one hour test, six hours recovery.

She has been looking foreword to this for so long she is trying to be positive over what is going to be a long drawn out series of tests. Off to see our doctor next week for preliminary blood tests and chest X-ray.

We know it will be a long procedure but we are happy we live in a country where we can have all this and for us it’s free,

More thoughts and prayers!

Wriggs that seems to be a common theme at more and more clubs. We have two CC's and two public courses here which is probably one too many for our population. All four seem to struggle to keep going. I would hate for any of them to fail because I like having the option of playing any of them. One of the CC's is in talks with the Nez Pierce tribe to take it over and build another small casino on some adjacent land. We will see how that plays out. The city owned course that I mostly play hosts a number of tournaments for the tribe each year and the new arrangement would no doubt hurt them. The CC on the Idaho side of the river has opened up for some public play which is also nice but again hurts the other courses that are competing for players. Not everyone is as enthusiastic about golf as we are.

I'm happy for her, I'm sure it seems like it's been a long wait. It's great that it will be cost free, what a relief that is. No need for financial worry. Sounds like it will soon be time to be happily past this whole process and on the road to recovery for both of you. This is a good thing, looking forward to hearing good reports!

I feel bad for all the trouble the hurricane put you and everyone through Reason. Even if you didn't get the toughest part like others did, we didn't get any of it of course. It's so easy to click on the news and watch hurricane coverage and aftermath and see the devastation, oh my. Just to try to imagine what it's like to live through it, I'm sure it's much worse than we realize.

When I get to play golf again I'm going to try the skinny end in the hands part, I hadn't thought of that, but I'm sitting here tonight with some time on my hands, looking at the grandfather clock over against the wall, and it's ticking back and forth, like a pendulum, tick, tock, and darned if the fat part isn't on the bottom. I wonder if that's why...well, I'll wait till I get to the golf course

Glad you're safe and sound Reasy.

Removing candle wax from toilet seat.

1. Turn light on........now that you have power

2. Sit on the seat to warm the wax until it melts into your skin

3. Take a hot shower to melt the wax off your skin

4. Buy a bottle of Drano

5. Pour the Drano into the shower drain to remove the wax

6. If 1-5 fails, buy a bikini

Ok, my best.

Stay strong, be sure to eat and keep busy.

I know I have a one track mind about eating. When Ma was in the hospital, all the nurses were laughing cause I kept going to the cafeteria and eating. But you need your strength, I think.

And drink a lot of water. Stupid Hospitals dry you out. Bring all kinds of water and drink.

I can feel you are worried, and thats so hard. Especially if this is weeks out and theres lots of visits.

Will be thinkin bout you and the Missus (as we say ; )

Absolutely how I feel about it all. I've had a pretty good berth as long as it lasts, free golf and a few extra bucks every so often. The club doesn't owe me anything. As you said, if I tried to make waves, it would mean the end of my association with the club.

I'll give Penny a kiss for you.

Take care!

PS: Best wishes to Mrs. Tol.

Good luck with this and keep us posted.

The club has been theoretically open to the public for years. There's the chosen times, as I've explained, that a person can't show up and play golf. However, the club just doesn't get public play in late mornings, afternoons and such. The downturn of the economy has a lot to do with that, but mostly, from the reputation the club has gotten in its 50 year existence. People just won't come due to the way they were treated in the past, plus within a twenty mile radius, there are many golf courses to choose from, public and private. People will pick and choose.

Seems mostly, the outside clientele the club gets are guys that either like to play alone, or are practicing their game. I've seen a few guys, who take forever to play their respective nines, playing multiple balls, and such. No one around our club to chastise them, or care whether they play multiple balls. I told of the incident years ago, where I hit another tee shot, when I duffed the first a few yards away. I was met with hostility by the course owner's son, who warned me against multiple balls.

I still feel that our club will go bankrupt, and a possible Sheriff's sale. Planned by the local capitalists to buy the property for a song. (Certain people are making many fortunes, what with the Marcellus gas plant being built, hotels, medical facilities, and just purchase of valuable well land.) The lack of action on the part of the boards, past and present, only intensify my opinion.

Supposedly, the club being a non profit, where in the by laws, it's stated that no certificate holder can financially profit by the club. The lawyers for the club, local fat cats, have determined that trying to convert to for profit is an unsurmountable task. Under the current status, the club could windfall millions, and no distributions could be made to the certificate holders. When I joined (paid $3K) the club in 1997, it was inferred that I was 1/114 owner in the club and assets. Others thought and still do think that. People have been paying $240 yearly fees for years, yet having left the area or descendants, but still holding onto their share.

I feel that the club owes me nothing, but all certificate members will get shafted, legally.

Reasy, I'm pleased to hear that you have come out the other side of all this hurricane business in one piece and you are slowing getting back to normal. It has been quite some time since I've experienced a major weather event on that scale, probably going back to one of the big ice storms that brought down transmission lines by the hundreds and left some areas without power for 3 weeks or longer. We were fortunate to be out for only four days and even then got off easily due to having backup power.

Just the other day I was viewing photos ans video on the Weather network taken from Mexico Beach on the Florida Panhandle and could not believe the destruction from the storm surge! :swoon: It's a heck of a thing when Mother Nature goes on the warpath!

Is there a lot of debt to be recovered?

Only debt is current payroll taxes.

Supposedly, any excess is supposed to be donated to another non profit or charity. I'm not so sure we will recover our initial investments. The initial capitalization was for 114 certificates, at $2,500 each, or $285,000 total. Looking at some of the legal stuff on the internet, the equity members of a non profit are not called shareholders, but stakeholders. A stakeholder only buys the rights to using the premises, not any monetary amount. So, the Board insists we will get our $2,500 each, but as in my case, I bought mine at a $500 premium from the widow of a member.

So, who knows?

All I do know, is that with 285 acres of land, already incorporated into drilling sites and units, there's a gold mine under the golf course. My suggestion is to close it down, and just bill members in good standing for property taxes and minimal liability insurance. Maybe $15K a year, for around 40 certificate holders, $375 a year. When the ship starts coming in, all monies can be used to rebuild the club.

We might have a real club, instead of a dilapidated clubhouse and antiquated equipment. The course, remarkably, really doesn't look too bad. The carnage caused by the skunks and raccoons last year is barely noticeable.

BUT, I firmly believe that is not the scenario planned for.

Thanks for asking.

It’s all about the EGO, some people would rather lose everything than admit they are in the wrong, it must be very frustrating as I suppose members have really good ideas how to bring it all back. With the board you are describing there is no way all the money from a sale or lease would go to a charity, bet they have already worked out a way to benefit personally.

I know you have put your all into helping but sometimes the only thing to do is walk away. Your posts are full of your frustration, sit down with a nice glass of wine and give penny a stroke from me.

Peace and tranquility Wriggs, stay safe.

Gus had an outdoor smoker BBQ brought into to parking lot just outside the Grille today. Word has it he's been marinating a pork butt and is going to do it up bigtime for tomorrow so Grillsters can have a nice season ending scramble BBQ picnic on the house lunch, or as Cyndy will describe it "Pork But Pycnyc"

Brings to mind some of the more remote BBQ/Smoke places in Bama. One of them had a billboard

out front that said "Best Butts in Bama" another, who specialized in sausage had a sign out front

that said "You Never Sausage a Place".

We try to outsmart ourselves down here. I'm waiting for another Butt place to hang a sign that says

"Best Smoked Crack in the USA". Nah, that wouldnt fly here. Besides, it's probably already been done

in California.

good evening Grillers, been a busy day for you all I see. We are removing the tiger grass we planted to hide our water tanks, thought it was a good idea but it is out of control, back to the original idea, build a fence.

Sleep tight.

Photo uploader stopped working, this is the job half finished, the tiger grass is 10ft high, only roots to dig out now, no idea how deep they are but they are not moving after 1 hour of trying the first one.

After getting shot out of the saddle for a couple of days by the "likes Nazi", I hope I'm now caught up for the most part.

First priority - I have friends and family and in many ways am a very fortunate man. Guess I've got far more to be grateful for than to gripe about. That much is a sure bet. One of the the things I feel hugely blessed to have is the opportunity to log on here and be witness to the out-pour of support for Mrs. Tol's situation. I humbly add my thoughts and prayers for it to go well.

Second - It seems so measly and puny by comparison to her situation, but I do selfishly appreciate the kindnesses and support voiced for us during the storm. We are fine but just knowing you gents took a moment to extend a kindness was heart warming.

A buddy of mine is a golf instructor. I've been helping him out day and night in getting his place better than before. You can imagine the havoc a storm like that brings to the lighting and nets at a driving range. Rewarding to help a friend out. He'd do the same for me I'm sure. Tomorrow's forecasted rain will provide a much needed day off. This old golfer is a little whooped - lol.

As to Wrigg's home course. I sure wish there were words and solutions I could lay down here that would turn things around. One thing I've learned from my instructor friend is that his "brand" is NOT so much about the facility. It's nice because he cares over it on an almost anal level. But there's only one true thing that represents his "brand". It's him. He's someone who quickly builds that invisible bridge between himself and anyone he meets. If you tell him anything at all about your life or future plans, he remembers it and asks about it the next time he sees you. What does all this have to do with your golf course, Wriggs???

I dunno. It sounded from one of your posts as though the staff and management aren't exactly warm and fuzzy to the general public. If they can afford that strategy that's fine. If what they supply is limited while demand is high, then they can ignore their "brand" if they feel like it.

Maybe it's just me - but I like to go where my money and time spent is appreciated by whomever is there collect my money. The establishment is making a choice about these things. I tend to frequent those who choose wisely. I can live without all the bells and whistles as long as I'm treated well. But that door doesn't swing the other way. No amount of glitz and glam deserve a thin dime from me if the staff and management are treating me like the gum stuck to their shoes.

So best to you and those going through it. Wish I had something more substantive to offer that would help stem the tide.

Last -

Our bud Radro is getting close to bringing her in for a landing, right??? Any word on the last run and date for that, or is that exact moment still being determined?

Whilst catching up here I hope I didn't miss the fact he's already home. I'm asking cause I was planning a 21 finger-pull salute when turns the key off for the last time.

Very soon! In this biz you can never put an exact date on going home until you get that final

dispatch that brings you home...........then you know. I'm delivering a load in Georgia tomorrow

afternoon then I plan to do one more round trip out west and back........then be done around

the end of October/beginning of November.

When my dad was farming catfish in Chowchilla, CA in the early 70s, the U.S. government

paid him several thousand dollars a year to not grow cotton on the land. In farm speak, it

was known as a "cotton allotment" . I want in on that gig. I'm hoping the government will pay

me not to grow cotton in my back yard.

After getting shot out of the saddle for a couple of days by the "likes Nazi", I hope I'm now caught up for the most part.

First priority - I have friends and family and in many ways am a very fortunate man. Guess I've got far more to be grateful for than to gripe about. That much is a sure bet. Got a neighbor I'd pay to to NOT run his leaf blower during all manner of weather deep into the night - lol. No joke - the guy will wear one of those flashlight helmets as he walks around triggering that gas powered beast as late as 9 or 10 PM. Then he'll get up at the butt crack of dawn and start the next morning early. He goes back inside to stick pins in dolls or whatever, and is back out there 3 hours later for another round.

Imagine very thin and wispy grass. Frog hair. Blown to within an inch of it's life. Why do I just know I'm going to see this guy on national news one of these days??

Surely there is a local regulation stopping the use of this equipment early and late. We cannot run our lawn mowers or blowers etc before 7.30am or after 5.30 pm. Any infringement can be reported and then fined. It may seem petty but at least we are not bombarded with excessive noise at inappropriate hours.

Apart from that a baseball bat to the head usually works wonders.

About 18 months ago we purchased a 3D printer for our son, since then he has purchased another one and is now involved with the design and manufacture of a larger more precise printer that can also print multiple colours on the same print.

Purchased extruded aluminium for the frame, designed and printed all the other bits. The down side if there is one is it requires over 200 nuts bolts and washers to hold it together, building and setting took about 5 days with slight adjustments, finished said he.

10 seconds later.

He found a packet of washers, he had put it together without them and had to take it apart one bolt at a time and insert all the washers, would I laugh at this misfortune, hell yes, gave him heaps. :)

They have several billboards on I-95 advertising Pedros at South of the Border in Dillon SC stating "you never sausage a place" We have a BBQ place up in Surfside Beach stating "every butt deserves a good rub". They used to have signs all up US 74 between Monroe NC and Rockingham NC that advertised "Stegall Smoked Turkey" We were riding to Pinehurst one day and my friend remarked "I smoked some Turkey one day and it gave me a headache" With him I would not doubt it in those days he would smoke anything that could be rolled ( In Zig Zags) and lit. I think he finally fried his brain He died about 5 years later from a brain aneurysm at the age of 31. But he was one hell of a golfer and gambler won a lot of money with him as a partner back in the day. He always had something smoking in that left hand whether it was a Marlboro or Lord only knows what rolled in a Zig Zag. I absolutely would not let him smoke any funny crap riding in the car with me. Marlboro or Pot was ok but no funny smelling stuff. Funny thing he never drank alcohol.

Speaking of Bama, I follow the Alabama humor of a guy named Matt Mitchell from Bama name Matt Mitchell. He writes and acts for "It's a Southern Thing" and he has his own humor called "The Ostrich" which you can find on Twitter. I'm not on Twitter but anybody can read it https://twitter.com/ALostrich

He's funny on It's a southern thing too, so you can find lots of his stuff on YouTube with Calli Robinson...
