Time to Step up Wilson (Amer Sports)

There was a rumour going round a few years ago, round about the time of Harrington winning back to back opens. They decided to release a new set of blades to celebrate his first win - and then he won another! So there are apparently a few set of fg58's in circulation. Anyone know if this is true?

I just found a picture of them!

Apparently not released for sale, I think they just gave them to their staff players to try, that's why they have 'proto' stamped on them, apparently.

"Hi Sweetheart. That's it!!! Just read a post from HH in the Wilson thread and his ELEVEN YEAR OLD BOY said the friggin 5's are too big!!! I don't give a s*** if I hit a 25 7i 120yds, I'm hitting the friggin Mizzys!! I appreciate Dave giving me those and I'm really trying to accept that I will no longer be able to hit Blades but I'll be damned if I'm baggin an iron that an 11yo thinks is too big. This really sucks! You can take em home with you tonight and please bring the 25's with you. Call me. Love You, Me"

Myself, Richard's BFF Dave and Mitch have been priming him for his club choice when he returns and I really do like those 5's and they by no means are a "shovel" but I will say that the 6's are "sexier," lol. He is speaking of a set of MP-25's that are coming. Sweetie, you know the Tour guys that Play the 5's in the long irons and those are beautiful clubs!! You haven't swung a club in almost 4 years and you have use of half of your body. I think that you should hit the 5's at least because you know Pauly(+3.2) Plays them and he loves th over his old AP2's. I will bring the 25's in :) Love, M

HH, I am sitting down with the Staff rep next week and I am seriously looking at the 6's for my bag. I've got a set of 100's and he's dropping off a set of 6's on Friday. I hit the 5's and they really do feel great and the top line is fine but I want a little less sole. Well, I'm glad that your son loves his clubs!! Take care :) Madison

LOL.... This just made my day. If I were drinking in front of my screen I would have sprayed it everywhere. Thanks for the laugh Rich.

Only reason my kid thought the 5's were too big was because he has grown up playing US Kids Tour irons which have small heads to get the weight down. For what it's worth, the 6's are bigger than what he was used to as well.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

richard,

They were fun to hit. I did see distance with them. Felt great. Not mizuno butter soft but the kind of soft you appreciate from Wilson irons. Hard to explain but if you're used to Wilson irons (like I know you are) then you'll know what I mean haha. My issues were the offset. Not a huge fan of it. I'm a mid capper that loves blades haha. I hit them better. The wider soles and longer heel to toe give me the opposite of confidence haha. I didn't know where I was going to hit them (obviously on me not the iron). They are a great iron though and exactly what they are marketed as. A crossover players/distance iron. Traditional (in today's standards) lofts (47 pw) but they did have the distance. I also didn't enjoy how high I hit them. Now I know that could have been fixed with shaft change, but I wasn't trying to fight it. Plus I wanted to get my beloved 100s back after a layoff of about 3 years haha.

Sold them because I needed the money and they were just sitting there. I would have given them away to my brother or on a giveaway like I do here from time to time but we are looking to move soon and need a little extra cash (every bit counts right?)

One thing for sure though is I think you'll enjoy them as you enjoy fine golf equipment.

Oh and I did really like the looks and the brushed satin look. Very classy

Forever Changing at this point.......

Just purchased another set of these for my daughter who is going away to play in college next year. Awesome, Awesome, iron. She usually never likes anything I suggest. Wilson Rep got her in a great shaft and she loved them.

Yep, I did forget about these as they were never released under this number as Paddy threw a wrench into it by taking two majors in the summer/fall of 2008.

A guy over at Oakmont had a set though his weren't filled and were all chrome, which actually looked great.

The finished and released iron, the 59's, had a shorter heel-toe length than the Protos, though their length/spec would resurface in the the Fg 62's. That short compact heel/toe is why I, and so many guys, loved the 59's.

Great Get!!

Nicely Played?

Have a great week Bro?

My Best,

Custom ordered the V6s ... they got the shafts wrong 3 times. Gave up and bought Ping. Im in the UK and Wilson need to take a leaf out of Pings book.

THIS is the kind stuff that is unforgivable, inexcusable and if it was anyone else but Wilson, I'd say no way, yet THIS is the type of environment that is pervsive at Wilson, and it starts at the top and filters down through the organization through Staff...

Nice gave em the answer to the test THREE friggin times and they still couldn't get it right?!?!?

WTF?!?!?

This is just sad because the 6's, 5's and 100's are as fine an iron as is out there, and I mean against anybody's iron, and they can't even complete the easiest part of the process with creating a total Chinese clusterfack.....

Ok, off to my next IV

Enjoy your irons Nic, you got great sticks from a world class organization?

All the Best?

Wilson has the most majors like bare feet have won the most marathons.

Wilson has the most majors like bare feet have won the most marathons.

And? Does this mean they don't make a great product? Or does that mean they have been out marketed? Them selling to Kmart back in the day is still hurting them now.
