Two Man Golf Tournament Formats

I am planning on running a competitive two man golf tournament in the Spring. I was trying to figure out a cool format that is different from the norm. Obviously there is the common formats: Scramble, Best balls, champman.... I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on a different type of format??? Please share!

No good name for it. But here are the rules.

Provide each team with a ball. Mark them so that you know they are the ones you provided. Rotate the team ball every hole between partners and the score with the marked ball counts.

So essentially we keep my score from the first hole, yours from the second, mine from the third and so on. You must play the marked ball down from tee to hole. If one teammate loses the ball ob, in the water, etc, they are disqualified. You cannot turn in a scorecard without the teams ball.

 

We typically play other formats on top of this to allow the teams who lose their ball to still compete. So we'll have a team ball winner and a best ball winner.

Do you plan on handicapping the event or will it be played as a scratch tournament?

Alternate shot is always fun for a twosome. As long as the teams are divided out fairly equally it is a real blast.

We do a flighted, 2-day event every spring. Day 1: front nine bramble, back nine better ball. Day 2: front nine scramble, back nine alternate shot. Scores are posted after each nine holes on the big board outside our 19th hole. We've witnessed some huge changes in the standings during that final nine holes (alternate shot). It's a great way to kick off our golf season.

 

We also play a Master's weekend tournament. Every entrant is paired with a golfer competing in the Master's tournament. The pairing is done by random draw on Saturday morning. The two-day sum of your net score with your Professional's scores is your "team" total. You could always play this one as a foursome (2 amateurs and 2 Professionals).

Shamble is what e call it as well. But I like the team ball format. Harder to do on desert courses here though. Easier to find balls in the trees than in the rocks.

Probably right. I think just in our small area they play three slightly different versions of what they call Chapman. I know the main way I've seen it used is choose the best drive and then everyone plays their own in from there. But I do think you're correct that it's supposed to be alternate shot in from there.

Haven't done it in a few years but my buddies and I used to get 12-14 guys a couple times a year, draw for 2 man teams then play 6 holes scramble, 6 holes best ball, then 6 alt shot. We just called it the 6-6-6 game, was always fun and very interesting during the alt shot portion.

Is this a one round tournament, or multiple rounds?

Played in a scotch alternate format. Both players tee off, use best drive, alternate shot in. Use at least seven drives each player. 70% of combined handicap. It was interesting.
