SM6 Wedges

So once the black wedges wear to the point they look bad, can they then be stripped and turned to a raw finish? Or is that something that has to be done from the start?

yes... you can do it at any point..BUT CLR works better.... you can strip them in an hour or so ..no harm to paint or metal or plastic furell... just dip them , let soak 30 min or so ..pull out and scrub with sponge, mahgic eraser, or scotch brite pad.... rinse in water... if some finish left dunk for second 30 min soak... minehave always been good after 1 and a scrub ...but soemtimes not..... i use this method for maintenance too.. if you dont want a rusty wedge just dip them every month or so ....soak a bit and all rust is gone ..they look new again .... by far the best way to go ..you get a no glare , yet satin chrome look ...for basically free

Thanks for the info and instructions, BH. I'm going to do my set this week.

I have the CLR, Scotch-Brite, and a container, now I just need the time.

I'll probably do it tomorrow morning. I'll take before and after photos and post the results.

So I went for it this morning and dipped the 52 and 60 in CLR for ~1/2 hour, pulled them, scrubbed with a heavy duty Scotch Brite pad and then rinsed with water. I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

I noticed a few areas the need some more attention and elbow grease so I repeated the process. Results below.

I'll do the 56 tomorrow. Time for 18 holes now.

I've done the vinegar route on 4 SM6's and they all came out amazing. I also used some acetone based nail polish remover to take off a bunch of the paint fill, leaving only the Titleist script and the degree of the wedge left. It looks pretty awesome I must say. I used a wire brush on them as well to make them more chrome-y. I'll take some pics tonight.

I wouldn't lead you wrong mr Rod ! Lol. Anyone who pays $300 for a " raw " vokey wedge is nuts. $4 and a little time will get the same thing.

I know you wouldn't, haha. And I agree, $300 for a wedge is nuts!

I'm sure I could have gotten away with only one 30 minute dip in the CLR, but I didn't use enough elbow grease with the Scotch Brite before rinsing with water. Some areas were more stubborn than others.

yea the black finish can be a little stubborn...but later when its just surface rust it will cleanup in a few min every time...

For sure. It took me some serious elbow grease to get mine to the point they're at now. And like you said, the rust comes off VERY easily if you want it to; every shot from the bunker takes it all off of the sole and some light abrasion once you get home will take off the rest if you like!

Anyone seen the new JDM 2017 forged Vokey's? Just came out a few weeks ago. Everyone likes to freak out about having a forged set of irons from Japan, yet we settle for cast wedges. I'm just as guilty as everyone else btw. 969ff7c72f17e49e3917bdbc363d147e.jpg

Are you kidding me? My three cast SM6s just arrived in the post yesterday. They are awesome, but look at these... really makes me wonder how they feel like. $260 for a wedge is quite steep though.

Between these and the Bettinardi black wedges I might seriously lighten my wallet...

Anybody have any of the forged SM6's? Curious about them and if you can order the black and strip them raw like the cast SM6's

Ok i am waiting for my 52/58 set in jet black and i am considering striping them too because of all of you. Can someone post some pics of their wedge that got a bit of used to see the rust on them. Dont want a full crust of rust on my wedge neither but some small light patine could be nice.

I did this last night to my 52 degree... It looks even better in person. 30 min CLR and done. Awesome!

If they are the same style "raw black" finish then stripping them would be the same as the cast versions.

I'm finding that they are a PVD finish. Is that the same as the black cast Vokey's?
