Poor etiquette and attempting to encourage rule breaking isn't acceptable or gamesmanship in my book. It'd be the last time I play with you

amen. I used to golf with a few guys who would gang up on another that was playing well for a particular round and try to psychologically break them down. There were small bets going on and they just couldn't stand to lose. They would ask other acquaintances to join them for a round and then use their rude gamesmanship to beat them down. They would run through playing partners left and right until they had nobody left who would golf with them.

It was really quite rude in my book and shouldn't be apart of a gentleman's game.

To me, it seems the OP merely got his group to calm down a little bit with some beers and a smoke, not true gamesmanship to the level indicated by the responses.

I see gamesmanship as rattling your opponent without breaching etiquette or the rules. They never drank or smoked a cigar against anyone else we played but these two three years in a row and it worked each time at rattling them. If you saw the one guys face every time he heard a beer crack, or the next year where my guy brought a bag of beers to the first tee you'd understand. The one guy even complained to the pro about how much the one guy drank iout there, further proof that it got the job done.

3 months into this and it's still sophomoric and nothing to be bragging about.

$620 per victory, 8 matches a year, 3 year run to the final with two wins, trips to fishers, Shinny, national, friars, sabonack. I'll take sophomoric

Again, great you enjoy what you do but not what I would expect a caddy or competitive players to be proud of.

Still say let the clubs of the competitors do the talking.

Add Christie Kerr to the gamesmanship employers yesterday in the playoff, that slow play was intentional to rattle nomura I'm sure, and it didn't end up working out for her. To those that say it's a balm for weaker players, would you say Christie Kerr is weaker than nomura, or was her goal to win at all costs which she failed at doing.

Definitely the weaker player if she felt she needed to do that. Gamesmanship backfires a disproportionate amount of time, especially on the level of play described in this thread (member guests, club champ, etc.). Few things are more laughable than a 12 trying to game a 15 as they slog out a couple of 88's.

It failed her here, but I'm sure it's worked out for her in the past. 19 wins speak to that since you don't always have your best stuff. You discount the ego of the 12 and 15 at the high end club level. Those guys live winning at everything, it's why they have enough money to join the big boys.

She might have 50 wins if she didn't have a 10 cent head. That's the type of player that relies on gamesmanship. And I don't underestimate the 12 and 15 chop at the club, been around them as much as anyone. They stink, and when the games come out their own score suffers more than their opponent in most cases. A good number of people are too stupid to affect anyway.

Yes and no about the 12 and 15. From what I've seen, these guys are easily rattled by being given putts all day and then being forced to putt one. A lot of these guys pay way to close of attention to their opponents instead of just worrying about what they have to do to get the ball in the hole. Hence why gamesmanship can be a game changer at the club level, and with the egos some of these guys have, they employ a lot from what I've seen to win. for instance, one guy at the club wins matches before he tees off because he is slow and deliberate as a player, and a rules hound. For some reason it really rattles opponents that I've caddied for against him that they can't watch him play, or worry about doing something wrong. I have had to tell guys to just not watch his routine, or worry if a rules situation comes up since I know the rules knowing that they are mentally losing from the get go based on what they are saying to me.
