Eating at the turn.

Recommended Posts

Most of the golf courses around here post sign of "if you stop, you'll lose your turn". A few golf courses will post the phone number / menu on the 9th tee box for golfer to call in ahead for a quick pick up at the turn.

When I had the chance to play overseas, in the SE Asia region, there are snack bar every 3 holes, not just for a drink and a quick bite, there are full menu for golfers to sit down and have a 15 minutes break. 30 minute break at the turn is not unusual. A shower and a massage at the club house before you hit the 19th while your shoes and clubs are being polished. I did not dare to ask how much that round cost my host, I politely offered to take him out on local resort golf courses if he ever visit here.

It's one thing to grab a brat and a beer. But if you have to wait for them to fry the fries, you've lost your turn. Also, take advantage of calling ahead on the 8th.

On the other hand, I've had guys try to jump ahead while you step into the privy and that's just wrong.

"I'm all about three hour rounds sport but me stepping inside to take a leak doesn't entitle you to cuts. Step away from the tee box and take your tee with you."

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Most courses have the phone to the snack bar at the 9th tee box to expedite your order and you would hope people use it.

I’m all for gutting someone who takes too long at the turn but the staff holds up a lot of groups too. They act totally surprised when someone orders food at a facility designed to provide such. “Oh, a hot dog! Ok, let me get one out of the freezer. You want beer too? I’ll just leave the hot dog on the counter while I get you a beer. Oh, 6 beers? Be right back, I’m out of ice. Here’s your 6 beers, that will be $30. I’ll put that dog on the rollers now, be about 10 minutes, ok hun.”

That $h-! should be ready, 3/4 of groups have the same order, and those that don’t know what they want can be offered whatever is ready or they get nothing and will like it.

I played The Leopard golf course in South Africa and included with the green fee was a sit down lunch at the turn. I was concerned that I would lose my spot but they told me everybody eats at the turn.

Bring a banana and a granola bar from home and buy a drink from the Cart Girl. Problem solved.

If the tee is open, it's yours.

CAREFUL with nut bars.....

I made the mistake of taking one of my wife's gourmet granola nut bars a few weeks ago. Not only did it taste bad but when I got home she gave me the business for taking one. I was like, "I thought we shared everything in this marriage." I just got the glare.

Not a problem here. Both my home courses make the turn away from the clubhouse, so we carry snacks with us. In VA (summer), it's typical turn at the clubhouse course play, but we rarely stop. My philosophy is lose your turn if you go inside and order something that has to be prepared.

If you're going to lose say half a hole worth of time, so I guess around 5 minutes, let others play through. If you make it back to the tee as the other group gets there, IMO you can have the spot back, but make sure you play the next hole or 2 a bit quicker so you catch up a bit.

Usually most people announce pretty early (tee or approach into 9) that they want to do a run into the shop/bathroom. I suggest they hoof it. We'll play as normal and with a bit of luck, they'll get back just as everyone else has teed off on the 10th.

I’ve seen golf courses run food out to players. Call it in and they call to ask you what hole you’re on.

I’ve seen outdoor grills between nines.

I’ve seen signs at the 9th tee with a phone number, order and it’s waiting for you to pick up.

I’ve seen GPS with a menu and ordering on the system that is triggered at the 9th tee.

I’ve seen drink carts with ready-made sandwiches.

I’ve had to sit down for lunch for an hour between nines in Japan because they run both tee boxes every morning with a crossover.

I’ve seen people have pizza delivered and waiting at the turn. Best idea ever?

I’ve seen people with a peanut butter and banana sandwich in their bag.

I’ve seen people who could go almost four hours without a meal.

You lose the 10th tee when you go to do anything...ALWAYS. I will claim/play-through every time.

Odd and seemingly aggressive culture.  Around here you only lose it if you allow others to pass or are staying out long enough to be clearly out of position. The latter happens utterly seldom if ever, people tend to make sure they return to the tee on time from the halfway house.

If I've told this story before, my apologies.

A year or so ago a friend and I played our front nine in something ridiculous like an hour and ten or fifteen minutes. We both tend to walk fast, we were both hitting it straight and playing well and we just kind of flew around.

I wanted a Gatorade at the turn so he headed to the tenth tee while I stopped at the snack bar. I had wait like five minutes while a foursome were ordering all sorts of hot dogs, beer, whatever and each of them had to pay individually with a charge card. They're unwrapping hot dogs, stowing beer in their carts and all that jazz while I walk to the tenth tee.

My friend had already teed off and just as I was about to hit my drive one of the carts comes running up behind us. The guy yells, "If you cut in front of us you better not hold us up out there".

We turn around and he literally has a half-eaten hot dog in his hand and a bag of chips on his lap while he's yelling at us. I laughed out loud and said, "By the time you finish your hot dog you'll never see us again".

After the round we were sitting outside the clubhouse when the foursome finally finish...an hour behind us. Guess we didn't hold them up.
