2017 Valero Texas Open: Discussion Thread

GolfWRX is live this week from the 2017 Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks), which is playing as a par-72 measuring 7,435 yards for the event.

 

Charley Hoffman beat out Patrick Reed by one stroke to win the 2016 Valero Texas Open, and both players are back for this year's event. Joining them in the field is Kevin Chappell, Bryson DeChambeau, Luke Donald, Tony Finau, Adam Hadwin, Billy Horschel, Zach Johnson, Smylie Kaufman, Andrew "Beef" Johnston, Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar, Ryan Moore, Ian Poulter, Ollie Schniederjans, Jhonattan Vegas, Jimmy Walker and more of the game's top players.

Have to give some special kudos to Wes McClain for shooting 63 in today's Monday qualifier at Comanche Trace. Here's your qualifiers:

 

1) Wesley McClain -- Houston (63)

2) Ted Purdy -- Phoenix (64)

3) Joshua Brock -- Wilmington, NC (65)

4) Zach Cabra -- McKinney, TX (67)*

 

* - playoff

 

Honestly, I don't know too much about the group of youngsters other than McClain, who wasn't necessarily a star out of Houston's golf program but certainly stood out on that team. Cabra played at Sam Houston State....and looks like he has been bouncing around mini tour events since graduating. We know Purdy's journeyman story, and it's good to see a player like him get in a field.

Streb plays a 2 iron CB, but a 4 iron TMB?

 

Makes potential sense to me - he probably doesn't hit a 2 iron into many par 5s, but needs a little additional height into long par 4s and par 5s. He probably mostly uses the 2 off the tee, anyhow.

Actually you are correct they are 714's. Went back and in one pic can see the 714 on the hosel. They just appeared to be pretty new and I might expect them to look a little more beat up.

No way Titleist let's a player have a proto for a future release out where I could get a photo of it. They bring the player's to their testing facilitiy in Oceanside.
