Persimmon Driver Mechanics

Got it today. Need the swing to bottom out about six inches behind the ball not at the ball. Guess with my modern 440cc driver I can get away with a negative a of a. Not so with persimmon. Must be positive. Hit it low still but got it out there 270 or so with a nice smooth swing and a little fade.

 

Now I just need the daytime temps to get out of the triple digits and I might entertain playing.

Yes, triple digits can be quite detrimental to ones golf experience. We have hit that dreaded phase of summer where intelligence is questioned when hitting the course for an afternoon round.

As for the "bottoming" of the swing arc with the persimmons, with respect to days of old, I am of the opinion that is entirely due to today's ball characteristics, as opposed to the flight patterns of the older balls.

In all honesty I try to put the same swing on with both the toaster and wooden heads, and have been teeing the.ball a bit lower than the recommended norm with both, with good results.

I don't have much experience with persimmon, but I'm finding that teeing the ball up -- equator equal to top of crown -- is giving me the best results using the typical modern ball -- high and straight if not particularly long (versus metal woods). That was the result from my practice session a couple of days ago using my 1W & 4W Citation with balls from my shag bucket.

Haven't commented on this thread as I feel it's really very much a "to each his own" type thing.

That said I glanced at the topic heading as I got to this page and the thought that popped into my head was "Persimmon Driver Mechanics? You mean someone finally put an engine on one?" ;)

After playing partner eyeballs my drive (w/ persimmon) compared to his, "Huh, I only out drove you about ten yards."

 

There is a night and day difference between range ball and a good soft ball. I was using the chrome soft but hear good things about others as well.

Could always do what I did. Take a good persimmon and put a great modern shaft in it.

NOW to hit a persimmon driver. TEE IT LOW. like you would a 3 wood of today. Teeing it high gets you nowhere. Well worm burners. Does anyone know what a worm burner is?. . Try to stay behind the ball. My swing is still the same as it was, minus my much fatter belly, as it was in 1985 thru 1989. I took lessons from a guy, that had played on the PGA tour, and had back problems. Sound familar. He taught Ben Hogan 5 Lessons. I would think that is the reason that I like the Bridgestone J33 driver. It looks like a bigger persimmon driver from 35 years ago.

 

 

Remember, Tee it Low, Stay behind the ball. Swing back and high till its tight, drop your hands straight down and move your left hip a little more to the left and fire your swing straight down the line. finish with your hands held high. And act like you know what you are doing, even if you dont.
