The ALMOST a hole-in-one thread

Subbed in a golf league last week and came to the third hole of the match (#12). This is a short, downhill par 3 that was playing about 105 yards, pin fron left on lower tier just ahead of the slope that seperates the upper tier. There was a slight breeze into us. The other team had the hole. The first player hits his ball on the green about 20 feet from the pin. The second player hits his ball about 10 feet from the pin. I use my 51* (bent to 52*) GW and hit a 3/4 punch to take spin off the ball due to the breeze. I was aiming for the slope just past the hole and the ball landed just short of it, took one bounce up towards the slope and spun back. The ball spun past the hole about 6 inches and stopped about a foot from the hole. Close, but no cigar. ;)

Closest I've ever come to a hole in one was about 4", but here's the kicker (although unconfirmed).. My uncle tees up before me at a par 3 into the sun, he hits it and we lose sight of it, but it looked a little off line yet somewhere close to the pin. I tee mine up and hit the shot into the sun dead on the flag, so we know that it was going to be a tap in or better, of course we lose sight of it before it hits the green because of the glare. We walk up to the green and only see one ball so we're looking frantically for the other ball around the green. I confirm that the ball 4" away from the hole is mine and proceed to tap in for birdie only to discover that his ball was in the hole! I am thinking to myself, could I have possible knocked HIS ball into the hole w/ my shot?? Well, to this day still stand by that theory, but I guess we'll never know because of that darn glare! ;)

Played golf w/ HoganFan last year at my home club. About 145, slightly downhill over a pond. Hit the edge of the cup on the fly (deformed the turf at the cup), hit the stick, bounced 20 feet away... and 3 jacked for bogey...

Same hole last year, I think w/ Hoganfan and another buddy, playing about 145. We were waved up to play through. Lands about 10 feet in front of the pin, rolls up, about 6" short. The guys said it was right on line.

Never had an ace yet but some close calls

Par 3 150 yards with a severely sloped green

rainy day

hit my ball 4' above the hole, it landed soft and rolled back toward the hole.

2 groups on the tee - we all thought it was going in but it stopped short on the high side

When we got to the green the only thing stopping my ball from going in was a piece of mud in the shape of a shoe heel laying 1/2 inch above the hole

I have airmailed two of them only to have them pop out (one of them actually flew OB after hitting the cup) but the biggest almost hole in one for me is when I was playing back in HS I plugged one in the edge of the cup!!!! about half the ball was visible. I waited for a ruling and they said that the ball was not at rest in the bottom of the cup so no hole in one (but the easiest bridie I have ever had)

Just for the record all of these were on the same hole....#3 at Battle Creek, Marysville,WA

well..my old man put it in from 160 out today. his first eagle in awhile. its a 350 yard par 4. an eagle on a par 4 seems the same as a hole in 1

Having gotten two eagles from the fairway (70 yard 1/2 PW, 173 yard 4 i) and NO holes-in-one, I respectfully disagree.

Been close a few times, but never in. (And yes, it feels sort of like another similar situation.)

The "second ball ace" is the worst, IMO. Sorry to the posters to whom that's happened.

I was playing a great round at our old club, I was an 8 at the time and was 1 over on the 18 tee. 18 is a 147 par three to a green with bunkers short, left, and long right. It has mounding and thick rough long left and a river that cuts in front of the front bunker and winds around to the side of the right bunker. Anyways, im thinking i need birdie to shoot par, which at that time id never done before (huge mistake to think that way by the way). I chunk it into the river. F@(K. In a fit of rage i threw another down and in play, nailed it into the cup for par.

The only time I have ever really been oh so close was on a down hill 360 yd or so par 4. Smoked a drive only to have it resting about an inch away. Worst part was it was resting on an acorn top. Damn squirrels. :partytime2:

Heh..reading these posts (including my original post) makes me feel better about what happened a couple weeks ago. I was playing the Balboa course (local muni in Van Nuys), and the greens were soft like butter left out on the counter. Came to the 13th, playing around 135, with wind in my face. One of the guys I was playing with hits a 9i hard, the wind dies and he hits it right on line but about 5 yds too long, and the ball (a pinnacle ROCK, no less!) sticks like a lawn dart.

I'm next, I hit a smooooth 8i (8 only goes 140 w/ no wind), high and soft, right at the flag, once again the wind dies, and the ball (top-flite d2 straight) hits 3' from the pin and again stops like a lawn dart. Ugh. Might have had a chance if the wind had stayed consistent. When we got to our balls, both resembled fried egg bunker lies. I mean, the balls were like buried 1".
