Since I am just one of a few who answer Bethpage posts [i live on LI, NY and Bethpage is kinda my home course[s]], I was wondering how you other members - especially out-of-staters - made out with trips, vacations and such to my area. I don't see too many follow ups. I hope that all of you were successful and enjoyed yourself. :golfer:

Our group will be arriving this Saturday morning with intentions of playing Bethpage on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday. A couple of years ago, the Black course was open on Monday's as they were prepping it for a NY State tournament. Is that the case this year? Or, is it currently closed on Monday's? We are hoping to play the Red course as well. Any calendar conflicts regarding this course that you are aware? A couple of us are registered in the phone system (obviously out-of-staters) and are hopeful that we'll be able confirm a tee time for both courses. If not, we'll hopefully be able to get walk-up times as we've done this in the past, too. Any other advice and/or information would be appreciated!

Closed on Mondays. Should plan to play the Red then and try Black on Tuesday or Wednesday

I'm heading up there next weekend, 30 June to 02 July and hope to get a round on the black. It's been a goal of mine for a while now.

Is it "no tee times sleep in your car" type of set up or do they take tee times now??

It's actually both. Sleep in your car is the same as just showing up without a tee time. You'll get a bakery ticket that allows you a place in line to buy a ticket. Depending upon where you live is how much time is allowed to make a reservation phone call. If you are lucky enough to get one then you don't have to show up until 1 hour before your tee time.

EDIT: Reservation tee times are only one week in advance.

Sleeping in the car only allows you into the first hours of tee times right? So 24 max players?

First hour and then one group per hour after. When are you trying to play? Are you a single? If a single you can pretty much get on whenever although you may have to wait around a while depending on the day.

Thank you for all of the information on this thread and others. My friend and I are unexpectedly able to get some NY golf in coming from the AZ desert the week of July 10th. We'll be staying in NYC for at least the first two days due to work obligations. Here's a preview of our itinerary. Would welcome any feedback or suggestions, including any suggestions to change around our rounds and whether we should double up on any Bethpage courses.

Monday PM - Arrive in City

Tuesday AM - Golf (likely Bethpage Red)

Tuesday PM - back in city around 1pm for meetings

Wednesday AM - I'd sightsee while my friend works

Wednesday PM - Golf (Bethpage Black)

Thursday - open for Golf. Flight departs @ 5pm from Newark

On Wednesday, we may leave the city and stay near Bethpage if we were going to play Bethpage again on Thursday, or would be open to other course ideas in the NY/NJ area. Renting a car wouldn't be a problem for one of those days. We are trying to pack in as much golf as possible. The commute from the city to Bethpage on Tuesday would likely be by Long Island Rail.

Thanks for your suggestions.

How good of shape are you guys in? Black and red in same day is gonna be tough physically. Not a super hard walk but playing a course that hard after already playing 18 would be pretty challenging. I'd rather space them out on separate days and enjoy that way. I was planning on doing the 36, but only ended up playing the black and am glad I did that.

Or if you were going to double up maybe do red and something else not black and black on its own day

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll definitely keep that in mind. I think we'll have them on separate days, depending how we fill in our final day of golf on Thursday. We both typically walk out in AZ, unless it's above 110.

Guys,

Let me tell you something that you might not be aware of. The Black is NOT flat as it appears on TV. It is very hilly and not the easiest walk. It would probably be enough for one day for most. Even Jason Day admitted that he couldn't believe how tired he was after playing the Black

Thank you for the advice. As it stands now, Black would be our only round that day. Any suggestions to fill out our trip on Thursday then in the NY Metro/NJ area? My buddy went as far as to suggest driving up to Cooperstown on Wed night and playing at Leatherstocking. That likely is a bit extreme and too much time in a car back and forth, however, we are willing to take a drive on Thursday to get an extra round in since traveling to NYC isn't a frequent occurrence for either of us.

Cooperstown is a nice thought except that it's a 4-hour drive one way. Keep that in mind. I could recommend a nice course on LI [Willow Creek]. I think you would really like it. Was presented on The Golf Channel by Lauren Thompson. But it's somewhat of a drive to Newark. My suggestion would be a course in Northern NJ. I really am not familiar with the area there but there will others coming here that DO know it.

Like you I consider Bethpage to be my home course. I live within a 10 minute drive from there. I'll be back to playing the 1st weekend in July. I'm recovering from knee surgery. I've been looking for people to meet up with to play with on the weekends.

Good luck recovering from the knee surgery. I had severe rotator cuff surgery in 2014. About playing, I have a regular 4some that I play with and 4 more subs sitting on the bench. There's a NYC thread here looking for players. Hope that works out for you.

Your schedule leaves very little margin for delays, long round or weather issues.

As your in nyc, why not try Trump Ferry Point. Its way more expensive than Bethpage but its best course inside the city limits & its public.
