NJ Country Club Help

Are there any private clubs in Northern Jersey where members can carry their own bags? Seems like cart or caddies is where most clubs are.

I recently joined Lake Mohawk Golf Club in Sparta and we have a ton of walking golfers of all ages. It's a challenging course and at some points it's even a challenging walk. Caddies/fore caddies are available on weekday mornings and weekends.

That's a nice course. Walkable too, as you mentioned. Same type of terrain as Ballyowen. Can be a challenge to walk in certain spots, but not impossible like say Great Gorge.

Never introduced myself to you, but my name is Dave and I live in NJ and would love to play with you sometime if you're up for it. Nothing fancy. That would be awesome.

 

Grew up in Jersey, dad was a club pro at the shore, but live in California now. Brother is still in business back there, so I've stayed in touch, but don't get back very often!

That is a nice list of courses to choose from. I have some insight to add as well.

 

I have played Morris County, Roxiticus and the Forest Course at Fiddlers Elbow.

 

If I had to pick one, I would say Roxiticus. The course is awesome and no two holes are alike. Lot of elevation changes. You are looking at about 35k initiation fee.

 

Morris County is a great course. It is fun, challenging, but not a course that will "beat you up" if you are off. You have to have 5 members I believe to sponsor and 55k initiation fee.

 

I was not impressed with the Forest Course at Fiddlers Elbow and it seems to be the best over the Meadow and River. The clubhouse and facilities are immaculate, but I was not impressed with the Forest course as a whole.

 

Plainfield is phenomenal. I never played there, but I caddied for a buddy in a state tournament. Do not fly the green on hole number 11 or you will make double bogey or worse.

 

Another course I would consider is New Jersey National in Basking Ridge. It is golf only, but the course is spectacular and have excellent practice facilities. $$ wise, no initiation, no assessments and no food/beverage minimum. Plus, you can walk the course at any time, for no additional fee. Also, if you travel down south you have reciprocal privileges at Pine Barrens Golf Club, which is a fantastic private course and Twisted Dunes, a public course outside of Atlantic City.

I grew up in Glen Ridge and have played the club many times on the high school team, it's an interesting course that's not very long, but fairly tight. Small greens and they just upgraded the facilities I heard

I work for a golf club manufacturer and spend a lot of time traveling through out NJ working at various clubs and dealing with a lot of there staff. If you would like specifics about certain clubs and an idea of the people who work and play there feel free to PM me.

they just did redid the clubhouse and the pool/tennis area, they did a great job on it.

Hollywood Golf Club near Deal is off the radar and one of the coolest courses I have ever played.

I had to decide between a few courses in Northern NJ some years ago and one of the number one deciding factors was the members and whether or not you think you can fit in with them and vice versa.

 

The club with the better layout and higher end in general lost my membership because I took a tour of the club and met a few members and it was snob city. The club I decided to join had a very welcoming president, made some special accommodations on initiation fees, asked me if I wanted to play a round with his son in law or have a meal on him. That made all the difference.

Hollywood Golf Club near Deal is off the radar and one of the coolest courses I have ever played.

Hollywood is simply amazing. Also some of the most down to earth staff i have ever worked with. Phenomenal guys.

are you planning on staying in Hoboken?

 

I'm only planning to stay in Hoboken for 2 years max. We are looking to buy a house in the Summit area so that location would be ideal. However, we are willing to drive for the overall club experience.

 

not sure if you have already joined somewhere but thought i would add my $0.02. if youre planning on moving to the summit area, Canoe Brook is probably your best bet as its in Summit. as others have mentioned, two great 18s plus 7 tennis courts, paddleboard, 2 pools, and a newly renovated clubhouse. courses area great, hosting US Open sectional qualifiers (Michelle Wie played in the sectional there) and many MGA events. if you're in that area, probably one of the more popular choices for country clubs.
