San Antonio Courses

Played Palmer on Wednesday and it was in great shape and super fun as usual. It had rained pretty good overnight so the greens ran a tad slow which someone at my skill level should never complain about! Also, the price was only $90. I had not played there in over a year but I feel like that’s a pretty good deal for that course. It seems like it was more like $140 last time I played the contera courses.

Just got through playing Brack today and like others here have posted, it’s in fantastic shape. My Bridgestone Tour B XS checked incredibly well from everywhere. I was quite taken back by the squared off greens but it was kind of cool once I saw it and got used to it. It was only my fourth course to play in SA behind TPC Oaks, Canyons, and the Quarry.

I have not tried to book yet but certainly leaning towards that for my SA round on the Saturday of the PGA Tournament. I have not even looked at the prices yet.

Cedar creek greens are just OK. Not awful.

Edit: Cedar did not play the tournament as flipped 9s. #1 was still down the hill and #10 was up top. The pro shop guy told me the experiment was a failure and look for it to be unflipped by April

Heard that Republic is closing permanently

Glad to hear they are putting the course back to “normal”....and as far as the greens they are “great” now compared to two weeks ago but still have some growing to do.

Suprised to hear about the Republic, granted I don’t make it down there much but hadn’t heard they were struggling.

That is shocking to hear about the republic. It’s a great course with some very fun holes. I would think after UIW pumping all that money into it and building the new golf program facilities on it that it would be in great shape for decades to come. It def did not seem to be in any financial trouble and has a very solid local following. That’s a real shame if they really close it. Curious as to UIW’s back up plan. That building had to cost the university 10’s ofnillions.

How is Republic closing? They used to be fairly busy all the time. They also have a pretty nice grill and bar that seemed busy. And like others said, isn't UIW golf out of there? I just don't understand, I know they lost their greens last year but I assumed they would come back.

my only guess, and pure conjecture, is that the land is worth more $$$ as housing or business. That area of town is growing.

I wish we could keep Republic and just close Mission but there is a literal city ordinance that requires MDL stay open as long as Cedar Creek is. (To give equal balance to Northside vs Southside golf access)

I was thinking the same thing J, but had no idea about the ordinance...too bad because mission was a dump the last time I played it.

Agree, republic is a far better track than mission. I actually found republic to be one of my favorite courses around especially for the price. It’s gotta be housing value v golf value as J said. That’s the only thing that makes since. I’m wondering were UIW goes and how they justify the money they pumped in. I wonder if it’s possible UIW bought it outright?

 

As to the grill and amenities, as someone else said, they are always packed! I’ve even seen a couple of wedding going down at the republic! Lol

The Trail remains open as of now. Washington state governor’s office designated golf as a safe activity so there’s that I guess.

 

Austin courses are closed through April

Saw that about Austin so it got me thinking about our courses.

I played Republic for the first time today. What a cool course. It was pretty busy in the am. But at a reasonable pace.

 

the pro shop folks confirmed it was closing May 3. They didn’t know why.

If the corona thing wasn’t dominating our public servant’s time, they would be getting a fight from the city.

Brackenridge was a little wet but very good today. Playing Quarry tomorrow morning. Hope the rain holds off.

Brack is in great shape. Flags present with PVC.

Cedar is healing from a punch / sand but should be solid. Fairways were great. Pins in with PVC.

River Crossing is in great shape. Flags in, no pulling allowed.

Lady Bird in Fredericksburg was in good shape too. No flags here though.

Just announced SA course closures all public and private. Golf can accommodate social distancing, especially if walking the course. Consider contacting the Mayor's office if you feel strongly.

Contact the mayor...you will cross paths with more people at HEB and on the walking trails than you will on a golf course.

Yeah this sucks. I can understand closing the parks (they were insanely crowded) but the courses weren't crowded and it's fairly easy to maintain social distancing while still playing.

What courses were you on? Every city course was f*cking hammered the last week or so.

Silverhorn also now closed but if you really need to play Alsatian, in Castroville, is still open.

Brack was absolutely pure before closing down too. Greens were firm and fast. Running really smooth. Hopefully it’ll come back in 1-3 months and just be pristine

I would assume the maintenance team is still rolling on the acgt courses. The courses should be fine when we get back out. Hopefully it’s only another 25 days.

Yeah they are. They have a honey-do list. Superintendents always want a month without golfers, so here we go...
