MD/DC/VA Golfers - This One Goes to Eleven

So the OCGolfRick clan made a successful trip to your DC Convention Center, and was pleasantly surprised at how well Metro was doing as compared to previous years. No charge to park at New Carrollton, train waiting for us, no sweat changing trains at L'Enfant, and walk right into the convention center at Mt. Vernon. I got a kick out of the new Metro trains with the ads running in them for Metro, with the campaign:

"Back2Good"

Not Great. Not Excellent. Not Fantastic.

Just Good.

The video loop kept showing things like "We're cleaning stations 4x more now!" and "Hey, look, we've got 95% of the escalators working!"

I was thinking of the ad agency who pitched this to Metro like: "Let's not set expectations too high here. Let's not shoot for the stars. We're thinking of a campaign we're we'd like to get you guys to just remarkably average."

For anybody else that got at least a chub listening to the David McLay Kid pod on No Laying Up, here's one he did with The Fried Egg early last year.

http://www.friedegg.co/podcasts/david-mclay-kidd

The host of The Fried Egg doesn't do much for me, and his voice kind of annoys me. DMK was good, though. He's just one of those people I find myself wanting to listen to. They cover some common things with the No Laying Up pod, but there's a lot of stuff that is different.

If any of you have followed, there's a new internet controversy around "deepfakes", which use neural networks to apply celebrity faces to porn videos. Dubious ethics aside, it's interesting technology.

Obviously, I can't share any of that. However, there is a parallel "deepcage" movement that uses the same technology to put Nick Cage's face on other video. It is haunting.

Question for you DC Golfers: As I went on Metro as we crossed the Anacostia there was a golf course just before RFK. If i'm doing my research right it was Langston. Why do you go to EPP as opposed to that one? It didn't seem great by any means, but it seemed to have a big range and a fairly open layout. Any reason? Harder to get to?

Langston is in a rough hood and kind of hard to access from most of DC. EPP is a little more centrally located, and has a nicer range (not saying much - but newer mats, heated, lighted - sort of). Also, EPP has much better visuals given that you can see monuments.

That being said, Langston's back 9 is a treasure in my opinion. Front 9 leaves a lot to be desired, but is really accessible for new golfers.

Clubhouse is in terrible shape and for something that should be on the historic register, it needs love.

Rumor is that Langston is getting re-done, however. We'll see how that goes.

can confirm. you definitely don't want to be finishing in the dark round those parts.

I play both. Long story short, neither is an eastern shore country club :)

The issue with Langston is that conditions are dreadful. Mowing is inconsistent. They don't have any irrigation so the fairways are insanely hard. There is a lack of grass on the tee boxes (I mean no grass at all on some of them). Trees are overgrown and impacting play on a number of holes.

End of the day, I would rather be at EPP than Langston on a Sat. morning when its my only chance to play in a given week.

GTM: Do you think the ball should be rolled back?

GTM2: Do you support separate rules and separate equipment for the am game and the pro game?

http://golfweek.com/2018/02/12/r-and-a-ceo-martin-slumbers-on-distance-issue-discussion-needed/

My answers: yes I think the ball should be rolled back. And yes I want to play the same equipment and have the same standards as the pros.

I think water and land issues are serious and that a reduction in distance helps both. If I feel like it I can move up a set of tees if that's needed with the new ball.

GTM : No, I don't think the ball or equipment should be rolled back.

GTM2 : No, I don't support separate rules/equipment.

But, I don't want to really allow any more advancement of equipment. Like the COR limit does not have to be raised. Or if they come up with some fancy tech that makes some aspect of the game "too easy".

Playing the same game as the big boys is part of the fun. I don't want to be driving the ball the same distance as Dustin Johnson because he has to hit a feathery with a niblick.

Short of providing all the pros different equipment to ensure true parity (we're talking some crazy harrison bergeron type stuff https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Bergeron) - what is really being accomplished?

bringing everyone back just makes the courses a little shorter, or leaves them at their current length. If DJ was going D - PW before, he's still going D - PW under the new paradigm, because everyone would be impacted equally.

Do not care about the pros.. do not/will not ever have their swings nor be as consistent.

If any of us get to scratch or 1 and stay there (I think a couple are around there) that is the pinnacle of an amateur career.

Maybe go out and try to win the local tourneys or what not. However, we are not going to find a magical unicorn and gain 20 yards and consistency, etc.

Swing your swing and play what you are comfortable with.

I think that train left the station too long ago for it to be viable. So much money has already gone into "modernizing" golf courses to support the distance the ball travels. What happens to those courses when you roll the ball back? They spent a lot of money to move the strategic elements of the hole into places that fit modern distances. Now those things are obsolete, and they've got to spend money rolling their courses back? I just think it's too late.

It's sad that a lot of golf courses will never really be played as intended. It was eye-opening reading a book like "The Links" to see how long courses were meant to play. There was a Shipnuck article with some kind of headline-grabber title about needing a 9,000 yard golf course, but it was spot-on. If you want the pros to play like courses were designed in the early days, you'd need to lengthen even the longest tours stops considerably. That's obviously not an option either. I think we're just at a point where we have to accept that the modern game is the modern game. You can't just erase over 100 years of equipment and agronomy innovation. If you're really that much of a homer for the olden days, get involved in some hickory golf association.

The only thing I think would be wise is for USGA and R&A to essentially block any further innovation in regards to distance. Don't allow anything that's going to push courses into another round of needing to modernize.

I don't really care to separate the equipment rules between pros and amateurs, either. Keep them the same.

The ball is fine. The scores aren't drastically better due to hitting it further either...

Tom Watson was -15 at the Pebble Beach clam bake in 1977.

Mark O'Meara was -20 at PB in 1997.

Ted Potter was -17 this past weekend.

It's all good. Stop trying to alter equipment that has the ability to make the game fun; both to play and to watch.

And the only bifurcation I would consider being decent would be a slight rules tweek of treating OB like a lateral in the amateur/weekend games. Not on the tour, but for Jimmy 12-capper to speed up play.

I really don't think we need an email blast to tell everyone that I was UNDEFEATED in my singles Cap Cup career against a staunch DCTour veteran, but if you feel that will be best to make sure it enters the archives, then I will allow it.
