MD/DC/VA Golfers - This One Goes to Eleven

I've been revisiting the details of the Bandon trip recently. Add in the DMK pod, lack of ability to take cuts, and I'm at 110% full salute status right now.

We've got 5 rounds planned, and Pac Dunes currently has the nod for our only replay. The more excited I get, the more I'm thinking about the possibility of adding one last round to push us to 36-36-36.

I listened to a little bit of the David McLay Kidd pod this morning. I'm enjoying it so far. He's very candid in the interview, as it sounds he was in winning over Mike Keiser to build the namesake course at Bandon Dunes. What he has to say about what golf is, where maybe he went astray in his projects for a bit, and how he's gotten back to what matters is really cool.

Really liked at the end how he talked about (something like) how he doesnt really care what people think about his newer stuff now, the real judgement will be how he is thought of 100 years down the road. Also interesting to hear him talk about how he is so impressed with courses like Kingsbarns that are given a garbage piece of land to deal with and really make something out of it - vs getting an amazing piece of land that almost anyone could build a good course on.

By interseting I mean I dont know how a piece of land right on the ocean can be though of as a plain piece of land - I have to assume it was dead flat and maybe the soil/ground wasnt ideal.

The cynic in me says it is him making excuses for the course he built in St Andrews that Doak hated on so much.

That's almost undoable. Believe me, even there, you can get "golfed out". At some point you're just going to want to sit in a chair and watch golfers come in.

Those courses are 7-8 mile walks. You're talking about 45 miles in 3 days.

I thought the same thing. Oddly enough I've talked to so many people that have played there that said a few of the greens were "crazy" but that the course itself is right on the ocean with an amazing view of St Andrews. Reminds of a little of what I've heard people say about a course like Streamsong Black.

Yeah, that's why I didn't book it originally.

With the daylight when we go, we're going to be racing to finish before dark those first two days. The third golf day we've just got that one early morning round. Thinking we just lunch and chill for a bit, and if we're really itching to do it, go play The Preserve since it's not on our itinerary.

36x3 sounds like a lot there. I feel like I'd want at least a decent amount of "sitting in a chair with a scotch and a cigar and watching some folks come up the fairway" time.

I still cant wrap my head around the fact that my flight to Scotland is about 3 hours less flying time than getting to Bandon.

Seconded.

If you're bailing after your last round (leaving the resort) do 36-36-18

If you're staying after your last round, you might want to consider 36 (sleep in)18-36.

I bonked hard the second consecutive day of 36. On #16 at Bandon actually. I was getting cranky just being in the wind for like the 8th consecutive hour, and then I asked my dad to take pictures of me teeing off on #16, and he took a bunch of extreme zoomed in pictures from the side that cut out all surroundings. Could have been teeing off at EPP from all you could tell by the photo. I was not happy.

You really do have to prepare to walk that much. And then when you get there, you have to eat and hydrate constantly. The wind just sucks the energy out of you.

*edit - I use the same gd words in my posts too much. Like "consecutively" twice in three sentences. what the hell is wrong with me

i need to hear more of 827's work stories. like, immediately.

stop telling us about your golf galaxy shiggle expeditions, and start telling us about the time a mail order battery operated device was already going off in the box as you hand delivered it to a buxom fair maiden of ill repute.

signature required.

No such other stories aside from what you’ve read already.

Here’s my normal day:

Arrive, deal with boss’ bull crap, get boxes into truck, sort documents into baskets, deliver and pick up stuff, get back to station and put stuff I picked up to head elsewhere onto belt, take stuff that was unable to be delivered (signature required, mainly) to the CSA, go home.

827. Stop. You’re better than this.

If you can infuse a 15 minute mosey thru GG into a short story worthy of a few shiggles, you can infuse a “Day in the Life” with more effort than what you just put out.

In other words, LIE. Or, at the very least, embellish. It’s called poetic license.

Also, it’s not a lie if YOU believe it. ;)

You want a Day in the life? Fine... I’ll type it out when I get home. I’ll even try to chronicle today with time stamps and keep mental notes of things of whatever importance.

And, yes, please show me less of the Executive VP of Sales for FedEx, and more of the pros.

Disagree. I want to see all amateurs, and not the ones who are good (Like that tournament in lake tahoe).

I basically want to see a competition where we figure out which public figure is a vanity cap and which public figure isn't.

Some of those amatuer shots are pretty bad, but still fun to watch.

I was tired last summer just walking 18 a day, four days in a row at Whistling Straits and Erin Hills. Big difference between walking MV and walking some of those tracks. I was unprepared.

Plan is to fly out early Wednesday to Eugene. Even with the drive, we should arrive with some daylight to hit the punchbowl and/or watch some golfers come in. No desire to do anything more strenuous than that.

Pac Dunes in the morning, and Trails in the afternoon on Thursday.

Old Mac in the morning, and Bandon in the afternoon on Friday.

Pac Dunes in the morning on Saturday. Maybe nothing after that, or maybe Preserve.

Drive back to Eugene Saturday night to stay, and get on a plane at the buttcrack Sunday morning.

I honestly kind of want to play without caddies. Make an adventure out of it. I think we're going to need them purely to reduce fatigue though.

One thing I think would be cool to have, but would require a ton of time post filming to actually produce into something consumable, would be a gopro. I think it'd be a lot of fun for Hive events, but again, you're talking hours of editing on a computer that can handle that kind of video.

I'm sure there's a way to hook it to your push cart so that you get some cool shots of yourself or playing partners.

I follow a handful of poker/golf vlogs on YouTube and am always shocked at the amount of editing it takes for a good 20 minute vlog. We're talking 5-6 hours of sifting through footage, editing, synching up music etc. I really never appreciated it until one of them did a little behind the scenes of how long the editing takes.

Anyone ever bought one of those knock off gopros that they sell on Amazon for under $100? Some of them seem to get great reviews but I'm always skeptical that its one of those things where the company just sent out a bunch of free ones to people in order to get 5 star ratings.

Golf Talk Friday : What are your thoughts on the long term viability of the current model for pricing and accessibility of golf in the US?

no matter what, in this area, there will always be multiple quality places to play public golf. price gonna go up, and courses are gonna get browner/firmer/faster/less manicured as more water restrictions come into play.

There was something on the news about this last night. Basically, it's tough to trust Amazon reviews anymore.

And you can't really trust website reviews on them either.

Was just looking on amazon for a new set of bluetooth earbuds (lost mine last night...they were cheap and needed replaced), and there are websites that give their #1 pick that have an average review of 3 stars on amazon.

i'd love a hive event at rivermarsh ;)

If they would give me a break on the rate, for sure. But corporate policy sucks there.

But a fun round/match wouldn't be out of the question!

Talbot County resident rate was something like $58 w/ cart last time i checked. Course, we need somebody from Talbot County

I'm friends with the pro and the head of golf operations. And work in Cambridge.

I could see what they could do for us if there is interest in a group outing...

Like all things retail: Location, Location, Location.

If you're Hobbits Glen, you will always have play, and having some rate/pricing power. Ocean City Golf Club, for 9 long weekends a year, can command up to $119 for Newport Bay. The rest of the time, its fairly empty. If you had the power to move OCGC to the Baltimore area-its a real moneymaker- down here its a break even operation. The high line courses will continue to do well, and those that are in a limited golf market will do well, but the rural/out of the way and middle market country clubs will continue to struggle. I think tee time prices actually march higher, not lower and condtions at courses worsen as they try to make budget numbers by cutting maintenance budgets.

Golf Talk Friday : What are your thoughts on the long term viability of the current model for pricing and accessibility of golf in the US?

This another thought I like in the same vein as the Amazon HQ topic.

Long term, you should see a reduction in all but the highest grossing and performing assets. Recent trends in real estate have folks like me (but not actually me, only one golf resort in my pipeline) buying up golfcourses and converting to single-fams, townhomes, garden style apartments and senior living. Golf is not really a highest and best use, not a profit center, and not easy to maintain or build new construction given evolving stormwater management and greenspace regs.

Country clubs will continue to flourish in this area, as they are a symbol of status and not of golf. 5% of the congo membership actually plays golf.

Optimistically, what you'll see is smaller clubs convert to private+ which would have a membership option and incentives, but also the ability for pubs to play in nonpeak times. Examples being courses like Oak Creek (Bowie/Upper Marlboro), though that one went to fully public.

It does seem like the out of the way courses tend to need the most maintenance,Geneva Farms is a course near me that has so much potential yet is in bad shape year after year.

We went JFK to Paris and it was 7 hours or so.

Dulles to Edinburgh nonstop is @ 7 hours.

Domes are you looking for individual earbuds like the Apple pod things or just a wireless headset? I boguht a TaoTronics off Amazon for workouts, it was @ $25 and its lasted a long time.
