Philly to Baltimore

We are heading from Philly to Baltimore for the weekend. We want to play a round on the MD on the way down. Any reqs i guess within a hr of Baltimore ( No bulle rock playing there in a week) ?

Deerfield in Newark DE is pretty good.

 

In MD, the two Chesapeake Bay courses are ordinary, but low cost.

 

Patriots Glen is in poor condition. Has been poor since reopening 3 years ago.

 

Mountain Branch in Joppa MD is good.

Just saw Deerfield yesterday for the first time. Really like that course! Green complexes are great. Very classic design. Some difficult tee shots as some of the fairways have big sloping hills in them. You can get caught in a downhill lie with a shot to a green that is significantly above you. Definitely worth playing.

Living just south of Baltimore and meeting up with my old man who 25 minutes from Philly, we play Wyncote a lot in Oxford PA off Rt 10. Really enjoy the course and its too difficult to get back on 95 from it (plus has an enjoyable country drive down 10/Rt 1/276. I despise Furnace Bay and didnt enjoy the Rising Sun or north east course last two times I played them.

 

If you are going into Baltimore county, woodlands and diamond ridge aren't a terrible choice.

Wyncote is awesome but looking for something in MD closer to Baltimore.

 

What would you guys say between Mountain Branch and Deer field?

 

Not looking at the muni courses...i did play Rising Sun or north east course years back dont remember anything remarkable about them either.

I would pick Deerfield over Mountain Branch. Have you considered White Clay Creek which is in the same general area as Deerfield?

Ideally was thinking about something closer to Baltimore but always wanted to play White Clay

It’s not directly in between the two cities but Greystone Golf Course is a good track. They host the MD pub links every other year.

And woodlands golf course is another good one a bit closer to Baltimore

WCC is solid. Free range balls last time I played there if that's your thing. Ate dinner at the restaurant there last year and it was excellent. Even if you don't eat there, make sure to go in and check out the railings in restaurant and on the patio.

We play blended tees- I believe it was back for 18..i crushed my driver and still lost it in the s***..

Yeah, from the backs I agree it is a weird hole. IMO I would say a player needs to be able to carry it 265 consistently in order to attempt it. The left side is shorter but if you lose it a little right you will need up to 280 yards of carry depending on how far right you go. I could probably bang driver over the trees on the left but again if I lose it a little right then I may not carry.

 

The play for me would probably be the layup area. The plan would probably need to be to hit a 190 yard shot but with the trees on the right I would think you need to aim the shot at the right edge of the trees on the left. Catch it a little thin and you could end up in the trees. If I hit a perfect 190 yard shot it would be about 160 yards to the center of the green but then the trees on the right are likely blocking everything but the very left side of the green. The choice then becomes try to hit a left to right approach into a green that is setup to better accept a right to left shot or try to go over the trees.

 

If you lose the layup shot a little bit right then it becomes a blind second shot over the trees and I am not sure how far back you would need to be to clear the tree height.
