Hogan Apex & Classic Blades Question...

Recommended Posts

Stu, picked up a black 6 iron as a fill for my set. The rest were white. During the rebuild, the weight slotted in progression wise correctly. Couldn't not detect one iota of difference between the two. Had a weird weight difference between the 7 and 8 and those were both white cameos. Forging inconsistencies?

Hard to tell unless you tear them down and gram the heads and shaft. Could be anything. Even a little epoxy can make the difference. Depending on the grips that can make a difference too. That is why when I really build and blue print a set I take my time and measure everything

I got a set of the 79's, and just couldn't play them. I think it has something to do with the underslung hosel. Which was not prevalent in the '73 Apex.

Am I wrong about the cameo's having that feature?

That right there is why most Hogans never fit my eye the under slung hosel. The Grinds do not have it either and neither do the 99 Apex. I think that is why I liked most Equalizers because the under sling was not as pronounced. What got me on the Equalizer Jag was when the old man switched to the bounce sole Hogans he kept the FC wedge. I played the FCs for a while when my Elite irons were stolen. There was a brand new Equalizer in the set. My old man basically said that I was not getting the FC wedge and if I did not like the Equalizer to go buy me a damn wedge. I played it to show him out of spite that a good wedge player could play anything. You could not pry that FC wedge out of his hands. To this day that is the ONLY FC I have ever seen that was worn out. But I played Hogan wedges for a number of years including a W grind 56*. LOL this reminded me of something else about the old man--- He was always prim and proper he believed if you played Hogan irons you should have Hogan woods no mis match for him except the wedges and putter. Right before he retired I gave him hell though. He was on the Ram Staff but had Macgregor 693T woods and Hogan Irons in that bag along with the FC wedge. Now the last round he played when he played with me he still had the 693 woods but the FC irons and my Hogan wedge. He had given the old worn out FC wedge to his friend Charlie who stated he wanted that club because it had beat him out a lot of money over the years. A few years later I renewed my interest in those clubs and tracked down Charlie to find out he had passed on and as his son said we got rid of all his golf clubs

White paint fill v. black paint fill. The black cameos were the latter rendition IIRC.

Doug,

You are correct.

Black cameos = 1983 model.

White cameos = 1979 - 1982 models.

Talked to my running buddy Bear last night-- The ones he bought at the pawn shop were black the ones I gave him were white. Well now they are black. It was cold and raining here yesterday and he was bored so he did the paint fill thing. He is retired and has nothing else to do except play golf and club ho and piddle. He has a loft and lie machine and he is one of those folks that does not need one. He can screw something up. It is supposed to be cold and wet this weekend so I expect a phone call around 6:00 Saturday morning telling me to fire up the heater and the coffee pot in the shop. About a hour later a certain Kia Soul will show up dragging the back bumper loaded with club ho finds and stuff he has screwed up. 3 days of bad weather yep the club ho will be on the prowl

its cold and raining here in florida so I am going club ho ing also. we could do a thread or several on just the magic of Hogan E clubs alone. my magic E is from the radial set of all things. I never liked radials and even gave my set away to a wrx member. I kept the E and its got the best feel of any club I have ever struck-even mizzys! also on a side note i find the grinds to resemble the landmark 73 apex more than the redline.

Yes.... here are some of the rare Hogan iron translations (RH to LH) in the game...

After almost 5 years, the new Ben Hogan Golf Company decided to offer a limited number of LH irons in March, 2018.

When haven't LH iron models been limited?

I personally like the Bounce Sole model with the Claude Reins shaft

If'n you gots 'em, I'll take 'em, since when I play LH (and, I have an official " LHplatzfeife) I have to play cross-handed, because the grips are RH on my LH clubs

To me, the best Hogan Irons ever were the 1999 Apex. Forged in Japan.

Agree. Played these for many years. I still have the commemorative set hanging on my wall.

Old stuff:

What? Nobody has any love for the Apex II's? Find the Cameos uniquely appealing visually. Once I changed out the hodgepodge of shafts as found and installed FCM Rifle 5.5's, they became decent players. For an "old hack" having fun with blades sorta way.

My "better to look good, then play good" bag of Hogans.

Tremendous bag there, Fella! :good:

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Small piece of the shaft pin broke off in my 4-iron. Problem? If so, what's the best fix?

If the head is still tight and the pin isn't rattling around in the shaft, you don't need to do anything at all, though it's odd that only part of a pin would break off. Many (most?) who reshaft pinned heads don't bother reinstalling shaft pins. As long as the pin is still in place on the other side of the head it's still mechanically locked so any repair would be strictly cosmetic. Hopefully someone else can speak to what you might use if you're looking to dress it back up.

Grandviile. Just west of Grand Rapids.

Interesting that we both have a set of '73 satin backs....

And (not so humble brag here) - my research on mine reveals that they were "tour issue" before tour issue was a real term. Ground custom for Doug Tewell. They don't show too well in pics, due to the amount of lead tape on the backs, but they have always played great!

If'n I gets to SW Michigan, be glad to do some comparisons!

I use to have a pic of me on top of a big snow pile swinging a white cameo iron in the middle of January, wearing a big parka. No more for this old timer!

I was helping a good friend of mine out recently with an emergency reshaft. He thought he needed left handed shafts... he took some convincing before I was allowed to proceed as normal.

  • 2 months later...

Always played his Hogan’s with their Apex 4 shafts. PC, red lines (both models) and ultimately the Apex IIs. Would have loved to play the Apex IIs with Rifle 5.5s, JPs all time fave shaft. He looks back on his twenty plus years of Hogan irons use as wonderful times. He still has two sets of ApexIIs, such a lovely club. Kind small head by today’s standards. You take out the 2,3 iron...see if you really do have a fine swing each and every time.

Probably should take them out to see how far his swing has atrophied!
