More than halfway through the PGA Tour Season, Jordan Spieth is one of the worst putters on tour. Ho

As of today he's 192. Yikes...

SG18 putting : -.515

Total putting: 322.9

Putting Average 1.78

Overall puitting Ave: 1.625

One putt %: 38.64%

3 putt avoidance: 3.79%

Putts per round: 29.25

Here is the big one guys: putting from 3' rank: 204th

I'm sure there's lots of ties going on within that area because the difference between best to worst is probably only about 2.5%... but it's still a telling stat. Even at 4' he's rank 183.

Some people actually don't think he has the yips?

He's had them intermittently forever it seems. Sometimes he gets hot clearly but that's the overall nature of golf at every level

Why does he not look at the hole do you think?

He's up and out of so many putts early it is incredible

His issue as I see it is mostly mental. But. Mechanically I also see that his putter comes up during the stroke very quickly. As in he hits a lot of putts thin. Then probably strokes some well. Which makes for unpredictable distance control. When you have that you can’t make anything. Just watch his strikes and you can see it. I started loooking as I suffer from the same. Have to not peek early and stop trying to talk it into the hole. Head down into the stroke and hit it.

But it’s mostly in his head. When he starts to think he can. He will.

Unfortunately, these things can last a long time.

And yet announcers keep saying he's one of the best putters on tour.

Hank Haney said JS was 205th in putts inside 3 feet. That's a bad stat to own.

I feel he way over thinks everything

205th is never great of course. But it's not as important a stat as it sounds. He has missed 7 of 381. That's 7 strokes all year. In 40 rounds.

Is 192nd in strokes gained putting an important stat?

Of course it is. And I never said he's putting well. If the 3' and in stat was an aberration compared to his other putting stats it really would be nothing. Missing 7 putts of 3 feet and in ytd on its own means nothing without context. If he missed a few at the end of a second round of a missed cut event so what? If he's missing them to lose an event it's a big deal. For the most part being 205th at any stat on tour does not mean you suck. It means relative to your peers, the best in the world, you are a bit behind the curve.

Truthfully ? No.

It’s part of the current crop of paralysis by analysis slumps we have going. Same reason tiger can’t stop hitting Driver. They post swing speed numbers. Etc. If nobody knew how fast he or DJ was . I think he’d stop pulling the double bogey stick.

Jordan has to just stop caring what the stats are and roll the rock. They will start falling. I’m in the same boat. And some fell today. Stats are simply to entertain us.
