When I got this issue of GD, my mind completely ignored those the first time I paged through it. I remembered seeing the Pings, but not the Nikes.

My question, where is Nike going with their designs and marketing? The Sumo/Sq is their driver for all players. It is their only driver on tour and will be complimented by a hybrid and FW next year. Why release irons under the CCI name as opposed to the Sumo name? Why not have three irons under the sumo name for each level of player instead of just one iron for the high HC? If the Sumo"?Sq driver apeals to the better players, why not irons that appeal to the same players?

considering that these are more golfers + 15 handi, this is more targeted toward them.

 

I find if funny that so many people feel that they are above GI irons, and in no way open to try different things.

 

I used to play player irons. I can see hope in what Nike is trying to achieve.

I don't in any way feel that I am above GI irons, I love them as they have probably helped me in more ways then I can count. I just thought the Hibore irons were ugly, and until I see these in person, the Sumo irons are ugly as well. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

IMO the problem for most people is not the overall look of this but the swoosh on it. Sorry had to say it, but some guys are freaking out about something they have never seen in person nor have played it.

I'd happily play the more attractive Nike clubs, if I had the game for them.

 

I'm confused by the major OEMs' GI iron designs in general. I play brightly colored shovels out of necessity, not preference, and they just keep churning out these plastic-badged monstrosities that scream out "I AM A MASSIVELY INCOMPETENT GOLFER!!!" to anyone who looks at my bag.

 

Is modern science incapable of shifting COG locations without making irons that look like a box of McDonald's french fries? Is it a physics thing? Does OSHA orange have a higher MOI than more tasteful colors, like friggin' chrome, for instance? Everything remotely easy to hit is bloody enormous and humiliatingly ugly. I feel like a fat chick buying underwear whenever I go to Edwin Watts. Gives me another reason to practice, I guess.

These are obviously not the most pleasing irons to the eyes. I will try to hold judgement until I see how they play, but first impression isn't good.

Seems like a lot of OEMs are making their entire product line based on their driver. Nike has SUMO everything, TM has R7 CGB and Burner irons, Callaway has an X on everything etc. Seems like they want the average consumer to equate their "less interesting" products (ie: irons, wedges) with their loud, tech-crammed drivers. Subtlety is a dying art in the golf industry.

This is the single best post I think I've ever seen on this board. With the exception of the MX-25s and the Ping G5s/10s (which are borderline, at best), I can't think a single GI iron that doesn't incorporate stupid colors. I understand why, I suppose, since the guiding logic seems to be that people who are new to the game will want "cool" looking stuff, but come on... some of us aren't new to the game, have good taste in stuff, and are still bad enough that we rely on our shovels to help us out. It would be nice if someone else could cater to us.
