I live in MD so PoSho is admittedly competing at a huge disadvantage for me.  With no traffic it’s 70 minutes away, which means it’s competing against a huge number of courses that are between there at northern Baltimore.  It needs to be a special place or special event for me to travel that far.  I can hit the places up 270 (Worthington Manor, Whiskey Creek, PB Dye) in under 40 minutes.

If I lived closer it’d be a different story.  I like the course.  It just seems to be billed as a regionally special course and I don’t hold it in that regard.  DCMidnight mentioned it, but there’s no reason for me to drive past Laurel Hill to get to PoSho.

I also have hated how PoSho used the land and that goes back probably 20 years now when the community was first staked out. Their focus from the jump was always on homesites and creating the best neighborhoods and amenities. You're talking about an area with gorgeous water on three sides - yet you cant see water from one hole on the course. Why build golf holes on land we could use for a marina?

Its one of the reasons it took the course so long to get built and so long to open in the first place.

yeah, they just need to get a mixed set rated. Not sure what that entails but I don't think it's insane.

Pretty sure its X amount of hole by hole scores of people playing that particular "scorecard" - and a certain amount of scores by a bunch of different handicaps.

I think.

I don't think Worthington needs an additional set of tees.  More golfers just need to play the white and gold tees there, and fewer play the blues.

That's a hard course for good golfers, that have a reasonable ability to control their golf ball.  It's a really hard course for bad golfers.  Like City mentioned, the forced carries abound, and difficult green complexes can really eat people up.

It sort of reminds me of Tobacco Road in that respect.  I think of Tobacco Road as being very gettable for a decent golfer.  It's mega wide, and there are often slopes that can be used to funnel a ball to the right spots, etc.  But I also personally watched it eat a 20 handicap alive.  In the crap all day.  In the wrong place around the greens.  It was brutal.

Sully, 150 yard 7/8 irons? I've been gone a while but this is still WRX, where the average player is hitting low stinger baby fades off their anti-left driving iron inside 150 yards, then it's a hold-off 58 (which btw is bent 0.375* strong and 0.83* upright, and hand stamped) that spins back 15 feet every time. You are clearly not speaking to masses.

In all seriousness, I'm enjoying this discussion. I've booked a tee time at Worthington for next week. My 5th round of 2020.

In completely unrelated news, silly season tinkering is upon us.  I've had quite a stable bag for a while now, but multiple tests are now underway.

The driving iron experiment continued this past weekend.  It was the first round on the home course since the shaft change.  I like the feel of control and ability to find the sweet spot I'm getting, but there were a few flares where I just left the face open.  I need to get where I feel like this club is approximately on the same level of consistency of my 4-iron, if it's to stick around.

I also snagged an excellent condition set of Srixon Z785, and rebuilt them with Recoil 110 shafts over the weekend.  I've been playing my i210s since they came out.  They're still the clubs to beat, so they're not going anywhere immediately.  I've been interested in trying something with a little narrower sole profile for a while, and I've liked the look of the Srixon 700 series since the 745 came out.  I'm going to play some holes this afternoon, which will be my first time hitting them.

You better play the white tees, sucka.

I'll throw a tour issue club in the bag, free pass to the blue tees....

Was playing a few holes yesterday into the early evening gloaming.  Was the only one out there, besides a father-daughter twosome that was on a separate 9.  Really regretted not having my phone on me, just fantastic views and great golden hour lighting.  Due to the terrain, the setting sun creates a soft line of demarcation and the shadows and foilage are quite the sight.

I'll post a few pics this evening if I get the chance.

I think to get an official rating/slope, the USGA actually comes out.  I may be misremembering the details but it happened at Piedmont when I was there.

The guys who ran the morning group had been up to Pittsburgh to play Diamond Run (where my parents are members) which had mixed tees so they had the idea to do it at Piedmont.  I remember them saying it took a year before they got an official slope/rating.

Before all of that, Piedmont had the "Piedmont Tees" which were a combo of all four sets of tees, including the front tees, that played 6599 if I remember correctly.

That's a cool idea, having a mix of all the tees.

Regarding worrying about rating tees - I think it matters more some places than others.  At DC's club, it makes sense.  You've got a membership that all keep handicaps.  Those combo tees probably make sense to give folks another option playability wise, and you need them rated so the scores are postable.  But at a public course, like Worthington, what percentage of rounds played on that course in any given day do you think actually get posted for handicap purposes?

You could be right, I definitely misremember the details of what happened and in what order.

The hole by hole thing was to re-assign hole handicaps....I think that makes more sense.

Some: Worthington could use a set of combo tees between the blues (6525) and whites (6058)

Domes: Heres my 6508 yard layout.

Without knowing exactly where the box is, I like the idea of playing 10 from the reds. Would definitely provide some risk reward with the water up there.

👍  Drivable par 4 with water down right side!

Perfect example of tweaking a hole without changing the initial design.  That hole is a layup hole (long iron-3wood) off the tee.   Pounding driver doesn't give you an advantage unless you're Brysonesque.  Shortening it puts it in reach for  most with the miss being equally penalizing for all. Would be a great addition to an already well designed course!

Is Worthington the official home course of the "Hive"?  Is the hive accepting new memberships?  🤔

The blue tees are 6525 at 72.4/137.  That's 17 yards difference, which means you would play it 0.1 rating and 0 slope different.  So you are offically permitted to play those tees and enter it on your handicap as long as you have a manual entry of 72.3/137 instead of 72.4/137.
