Tiger Woods 2019 Taylormade Irons...P7TW?

Nope been playing mine straight out the box.... that is high though for you. Maybe try and get your left shoulder lower at impact.? I can hit mine low or high as needed...

Went and played a few holes with them today. First hole...Played 2 balls off the tee. Approaches left were one 8 iron and pw. Hit a perfect 2 yard fade with the 8. Had to saw off the pw to take some off and the results were....2 kick in birds....guys on the tee box were like what, who the hell is this guy?

Hahahah thats awesome!! I appreciate the tip though foreals! Ive been actually reading how to get my ball flight lower and thats something i saw so im gonna give that a shot! Also I do love the irons no doubt. My scores have got better by at least a couple strokes! I got my lowest round with them not long after i gamed them. Shot an 80 at a very tough CC here in Rolling Hills CA. If it wasnt for my usual poor chipping coulda had a 78. I think i may get even more consistency now that the lofts are properly gapped!

Yes I agree. The TWs have a very tight dispersion front to back. Unlike cavity backs and hot irons you can really nuke some and some you miss are also punished some I miss more greens with CBs...also careful going stronger because it adds offset. I have found the correct offset makes more of a difference and loft can. Loft just moves your stock distances up or down but offset affects dispersion more.

Interesting about the offset! What do you deem „correct“, whatever is stock for a particular set of irons? I might get my irons bent a degree stronger, which adds offset, and this concerns me.

My set had as tight of tolerances as any retail set I've ever bought. Loft/lie/length was all spot on, and SW was within .5.

Right....6" is with 1" insertion in the hosel...or 5" from top of hosel to first step.

But the 9 iron is 6.5" not the same as the pw at 6". Which means the shafts are soft-stepped.

Possibly tiger uses a hosel depth of 1.5" in order to get the 4.5" top of hosel to first step....or tips the shaft 1".

I may have misread what you stated regarding the insertion description.

Mine also came soft stepped when they shouldn’t have. I played std bore (1.25”) hardstepped, so a soft step build w/ a 1” insertion (how mine came) performed very differently when I got my set.

I then had my guy correct it, and the clubs perform much differently.

FYI,

For those of you that dont know a standard build with Taylormade uses the 37" shaft only for the PW, then uses the 37.5" shaft for the 9 iron and goes up in progression from there.... So technically all Taylormade irons are built with the 3-9 iron soft stepped once and the PW standard. I have no idea why they build clubs this way but they do. So your irons are coming wrong from Taylormade because this is how they build all there irons with DG shafts. Taylormade also does this with certain other shafts as well. Makes no sense but they do.

Also FYI Callaway builds there irons with DG shafts like this as well.

Titleist on the other hand builds correctly, i am sure there are other OEM's who do as well.

This is 100% accurate. I've taken apart of bunch of S300 and X100 TaylorMade iron sets and they were all built like this. My suspicion is that the person/team that setup their inventory system simply doesn't know that different shaft models handle the low end differently. I can't think of any other rational reason.

It should not but since you did not request a hard step, I doubt they will do it at no charge. Every OEM has their build standards even if some customers do not know the difference or agree with the standard shaft installation specs. E.G., some companies have different hosel depths but do not readily publish them.

I currently play a set of Cleveland 588 MB's with X100's straight in but given how these heads spin so much, and Taylormade soft steps the 3- 9 in a "standard" order, would you suggest ordering these with a Hard Step? It's supposed to only be 1/3 a difference so not much but the thought of a soft step bothers me.

The pw uses the standard 37" shaft that True Temper recommends using in the 9, Wedge shafts.

TM without any mention uses the 37.5" shaft in the 9 and subsequent shafts to the 3....which is softstepping 1x the 3 - 9.

You might call TM about an order since their custom order does not provide a spot to indicate you want hardstepped.

You’re really not going to get anything more than a difference in feel. If that feel difference creates a change in your delivery, then it will matter. If you are expecting a stiffer shaft alone to make a difference in launch/spin...then you are expecting way too much.

I was looking to see if any of the newer hollow body irons tested well against my miura baby blades. I tried multiple irons, tm 790,760,730, gen 2 and 3 pxg and was just not loving the dispersion. My fitter grabbed the p7tw head and it was just right. I had never heard of it before that day. I gained some distance and a lot tighter dispersion. The shaft in it was different from what i was playing and I am sure that is part of the improvement I saw. So, for those stating these clubs are a poor choice because they were developed for Tiger I would just say there are golfers out there who these are great clubs for. These irons are wonderful as set up for me. Clubs are expensive enough, I can't afford to buy clubs just to look at them with someone elses set up.

Cant say enough good things about these irons. The soft stepping issue I think is a non issue. I dont think these irons spin alot or too much. They just perform...

This is one of those things that on paper it doesn't make much of a difference, but it definitely can in practice.

If you normally hardstep your irons, there will be a marked difference. I suspected mine were softstepped by swinging them, and I immediately knew when my iron shots produced a spinny flight and flew 15 yards shorter.

If you play a 1.25" bore and you switch to these, which have a 1" bore, you'll also have to tip your iron shafts to match playing characteristics as well.

If you play DG shafts, the best way to make sure a shaft plays the same in a different head is to use the hosel to first step measurement.

In my case, I found I needed to tip the shafts (in addition to properly hardstepping my shafts) to match my VR Pro blades. When I did that, it was like they were identical clubs (VR Pro to P7TW), which is what I expected in the first place.

  • 2 weeks later...

I asked Taylormade about using the same shaft in the 9 and PW as I am about to order and was told they won't do that.  Directly from them: "A hard-step for us it taking 1/2 of the tip section. We do not allow individual clubs to be ordered in regards to P7TW's. We unfortunately cannot customize individual P7TW irons unless specified through one of our wholesale accounts. The reason we have this restriction is because we do not allow anything but full sets of P7TW's to be sold, so our website is not set up to customize one of these clubs out of the set."

This means you will have to get the 37.5 shaft in the 9 iron as opposed to the same 37" as the PW. My thinking is though if they tip them 1/2" they should perform more like a standard install (what I currently play).

If you order them Tiger Spec they will also be soft stepped as standard. The only thing the tiger spec does is change the lofts, grip, and length, nothing to do with the shafts stiffness or tip.

Quick update: Just placed my order for these with DG X100's 4-PW, Hardstepped 1x. I highly doubt they are actually tip trimming taper tip shafts 1/2", I think that might just be bad info on their side. Hopefully the 1x hardstep just means they will use the same PW and 9 iron shaft which is actually a "standard" DG install.

Expected ship date is 5/22 but hopefully it's earlier. I will let you guys know what the build comes in like.
