how would you compare the feel of the '08 button back to the following??

- champion's choice bb (i rolled once in a store and felt much more solid in terms of weight hitting the ball but also soft)

- old Tei3 newport (felt very light and clicky to me)

- newer special select series (great blend of feels IMO, not too soft, not too firm, not too clicky)

- '08 range studio select (very pure and soft feel when hit on screws, a little light and clicky feel when off-center)

These are all the scotty's i'm familiar with.....trying to gauge how the BB will feel before pulling the trigger

BB feels closer to champions choice than a tei3

I'd agree with that and add I think the BB feels better than the champions choice. One of the best Scotty's ever IMO.

Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Depends. You are asking a question between solid block milling vs. inserts. I always go for solid block versus any insert. I have tried and tried again to love Tei3 and BB and always come back to my Rickie.

Funnily enough I talked to the guys at the Gallery in Encinitas, and they all say that Scotty says his Tei3 and BB inserts are very hard but the cushioning and adhesive helps soften the impact.

This is exactly what my wallet wanted to hear! My Cameron classic NP and bettinardi studio stock (FIT) are pretty soft and I don’t really want to go firmer but wanted to add a BB or TEI3. I have heard so many mixed statements on soft or firm (understanding feel is subjective). Maybe this will hold me off..

Tei3s are not all made equally, but they are some of the softest putters you’ll ever find. Some like the original and the button back are softer than others, like the Champions Choice imo.

With that being said, solid stainless steel heads with light milling aren’t too far off. I’ve found that the head weight at impact feels more substantial and has a bit of a more dull click to it…but not in a bad way.

Milling makes a huge difference in feel. My OG Buttonback has nearly 0 face milling which seems to be a popular option in putters right now. If you did a deep mill on a Buttonback it would feel markedly different.

I’ve had my ‘08 BB NP for a few months now. To me it feels fairly hard and clicky given the smooth face. I know feel is subjective but to me the Terrylium insert doesn’t make it feel soft compared to a NP with milling.

I’m wondering if putting in a LAGP graphite shaft will soften up the feel off the face…anyone done this?

This is a serious question - are you hitting it off the sweet spot? It sounds to me like you’re hitting it off the heel. I’ve had the same experience where I pick up my button back and the feel sounds clacky and bad. Every time it’s because I’ve been off.

So I can definitely feel a difference across the face - you get really nice feedback on the BB. Do I regularly hit it more towards the heel than the center, IDK possibly. I’m a scratch golfer so I doubt I’m so off that I always hit it off the heel.

I have the NP without a sight line. Maybe I’m setting up closer to the heel than true center. Any visuals for the actual center point of the Newport BB?

My 08 button back is a circle t with a flange line so it’s easier to find center. When I had the naked bb I did find it felt more toward the toe. My miss with every putter is a heel strike though…

This is something I do quite often, I stand there thinking the ball is centred in the putter, someone behind me will say it's 5mm towards the heel! As a drill on another putter with sight line, I'd roll the ball's alignment line back slightly so that I could centre the putter behind it.
